Hazel Maxine (Hedy) Thompson of Pana

Hazel Maxine (Hedy) Thompson, 87, passed away Wednesday, May 8, 2013 at 11:42 p.m. in her home at Gowin Parc in Pana after living the last decade graciously and lovingly with Alzheimer’s disease. As she passed she was with her daughter, son-in-law, and special nurse and friend Debbie. Mrs. Thompson was born April 29th, 1926 in Decatur, IL to Elmer and Lela (Keeman) Fellwock. She married Maxey B. Thompson on April 27, 1956 in Decatur and they lived in Mattoon, Taylorville, and settled in Edinburg in 1971. She and Mr. Thompson were married a few days short of 50 years, when he died in March of 2006.

Hedy is survived by her daughter Carol and son-in-law Larry Gowdy of Edinburg; grandchildren Cari (Martin) Hoover of Troy, Tara (Nate) VanderKamp of Wilmette, Tony (Margaret) Telford of Taylorville, Robert (Emily Sandy) of Springfield, Justin (Chyenna) of Wellsville, PA, Shannon Aman (Rob Heady) of Auburn, Logan Gowdy (Whitney Rika) of Auburn, Mason Gowdy (Jessica LaDew) of Springfield, and a special great-nephew Brian Burton of Auburn; 15 great-grandchildren; brother-in-law Alan Skalink of Tampa, FL, and several nieces and nephews, and her loving caregivers at Gowin Parc.

Hedy had studied nursing and in her later years worked as an aid in several Springfield nursing homes. She had also worked as a housekeeper for several families in this area. Her most important career was being a mother to her only child , and a grandmother. She loved to cook, bake, and take care of her family and her home. In later years, Hedy and Maxenjoyed their membership in the Pontiac Oakland International Club, traveling all over the United Sates to various conventions and shows.

Hedy was reunited in Heaven with her husband Max, parents, brothers Gene, Darrell, Larry, David, and her sister Marian.

An Open House Celebration of Hedy’s Love and Life will be held at the home of her daughter -and son-in-law, Saturday May 18th, 1 p.m.-7 p.m. Friends and family are invited to come share memories, food, and a toast to this beautiful woman. A private family interment will be at a later date.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimers Association, or to the Gowin Parc Resident Entertainment Fund (340 IL Rt. 29, Pana, IL 62557), to keep the music playing that Hedy loved so much.
