Iona Evabel Cornell, 96, of Taylorville, Illinois, passed away in her home in the comforting presence of her family on November 13, 2014. Evabel, daughter of Roy and Lola Allan, was born near Weldon, Illinois, on August 20, 1918. After graduating from Beauty School in 1939, she married Walter E. Cornell, a farmer, from Dewitt. Together, they established themselves in farming near Mt. Auburn where they reared three children. Allan, Gary, and Karen, and remained there until retirement when they moved to Taylorville. Walter preceded her in death in 1985.
Family was the center of her life and she could always be counted on to be available for her children and grandchildren. She will be especially remembered for her “good old fashioned” cooking and bountiful meals. She was a strong and highly principled women who tackled any project of interest to her. Her special interests were gardening, hand quilting, and needlework, stenciling, and refinishing antique furniture.
Survivors include daughter Karen Cornell of Indianapolis; Daughter-in-Law Joan Cornell of Taylorville; Grandson Brent (Janelle) Cornell of Langleyville; Granddaughter Stacey Cornell of Champaign, IL; Great-Grandchildren, Justin (Erika) Cornell, Brian Cornell, Katie Cornell, Julie Lauffenburger, and Wendy (Michael) Ray; Great-Great Grandsons Roman and Leo Cornell; and Niece Beverly Hermann and Nephews David Allan and Lyle Allan.She was preceded in death by her Parents, Husband Walter, Sons Allan and Gary, Brother Andrew, and Sister Grace (infancy).
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, November 19 at 2:00 p.m. at Sutton Memorial Home in Taylorville with visitation 12:00-2:00, prior to the service. Graveside services will follow at the Dewitt Cemetery in Dewitt, IL. Chaplain Sister Rose McKeown will be officiating.
