Virgil August Schmidt, 77 of Springfield, IL passed away at 4:10 PM on Friday, October 31, 2014 at the Lakeland Regional Medical Center in Lakeland, FL.  He was born April 19, 1937 in Cantrall, IL son of Virgil L. and Clara (Bliesner) Schmidt.  He married Shirley Buchter on July 12, 1959 at the Stonington United Methodist Church and she survives him in Springfield.

In addition to his loving wife Shirley, he is survived by his Son: Kevin Schmidt of Chatham, IL and several Nieces and Nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Virgil had served his Country in the United States Army from 1960 until 1962.  He was an electrician for Fiatt and later for Horace Mann Insurance Company.  He loved to collect toy tractors and fix bicycles for kids.  He enjoyed the outdoors, especially feeding the birds and other animals in his yard.  A “Snow Bird” of Florida for the past 3 years, he was very active with the Senior Center and loved to travel.  He was also a member of the Jerome United Methodist Church.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM, Sunday, November 9, 2014 at the Sutton Memorial Home in Taylorville, IL and from 9:00 AM until the time of services on Monday, November 10, 2014 at the Jerome United Methodist Church in Springfield, IL. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM, Monday, November 10, 2014 at the Jerome United Methodist Church in Springfield, IL with Pastor Paul Black officiating.  Burial with full Military Rites will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery in Riverton, IL.

Memorials in his honor may be made to the Jerome United Methodist Church, 1570 Reed Avenue, Springfield, IL 62704 and will be received by the Sutton Memorial Home.
