George V. Letcher of Stonington

George V. Letcher, 93, of Durand Illinois, formerly of Stonington, passed away peacefully at 8:45 am, August 19, 2014, surrounded by his family. He was born November 12, 1920 in Stonington the son of Thomas and Annie Gillespie Letcher.

George graduated from Stonington High School in 1938 and joined the Army Air Corps in 1939 where he served 5 ½ years, first at Chanute Field in Rantoul, Illinois, and then with Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron, 7th Fighter Wing, in Hawaii. On March 11, 1945 he married Algeria (Gig) Letcher, who preceded him in death on November 22, 2012.

George was a member of First Baptist Church, Stonington, where he served as Deacon and Trustee, and of the Zue VanDeveere American Legion Post # 257, Stonington. He was a Trustee for Stonington Township, Boy Scout Leader, and Volunteer firefighter for the Stonington Volunteer Fire Department. George with his wife Gig owned and operated Letcher’s Grocery Store in Stonington for 24 years, and retired from the Illinois Attorney General’s Office, State of Illinois.

Surviving are sons, George Earl Letcher and wife Beverley of Durand Illinois; and Gail Edward Letcher and wife Darlene of Red Bud Illinois; grandchildren, Kathy (Bob) Letterman and husband Bob of Appleton Wisconsin; Andy Letcher and wife Krista of Arlington Heights Illinois; Amy  Letcher and fiancé Jeff Wasil of Wadsworth Illinois; David Letcher and wife Alyssa of Burlington Kentucky; Hilary Hobbs and Elex, St. Louis  Missouri; Andrea Letcher-Martin and husband Steven of Red Bud Illinois; Adam Letcher, Chicago Illinois; Michael Letcher, Red Bud Illinois; great grandchildren, Zoe Hobbs; Luke Letcher; Hannah Letcher; Kailynne Martin, and sister, Caroline Murray, Vandalia Illinois.

George was preceded in death by wife, Algeria (Gig), parents, and two brothers, Earl Letcher and Thomas Letcher.

Funeral will be at the First Baptist Church of Stonington at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 23 with Rev. Dr. William Mitchell officiating. Visitation on Friday, August 22, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at McClure Funeral Home, Taylorville, Illinois, and from 10:00 to 11:00 at the church on Saturday. Burial with Military Honors will be in Old Stonington Cemetery, Stonington.
