Leah Christine (Daykin) (Spurling) Brooks, 99, of Taylorville, passed away Thursday, July 23, 2015, at 11:31 a.m. at Taylorville Estates in Taylorville, IL. She was born July 10, 1916, in Taylorville and was a lifelong resident of the city. Christine was the daughter of William and Nellie Elizabeth (McClughan) Daykin. She married S.F. "Fritz" Spurling on January 20, 1939, in Taylorville, IL. He preceded her in death on May 16, 1975. She married Joe Brooks Jr. on February 15, 1986, in Taylorville, IL, and he preceded her in death on September 16, 2002.
Christine owned and operated Mrs. Spurling’s Flowers and Gifts, worked in clothing retail sales at Shirley’s Dress Shop, and was an advertising representative and radio personality at WTIM. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Taylorville and a lifetime member of the Taylorville Country Club. She loved to golf and play bridge.
Christine’s loving spirit and strength of character comforted and inspired her family during her life, and these virtues and affections continue to nourish her loved ones now and always. She is survived by her sons, Donald F. (Nancy) Spurling of Merritt Island, FL, and Gary A. (Brenda) Spurling of Taylorville, IL; stepdaughters, Susan Pearce of Taylorville, IL, and Becky Mazzotti of Taylorville, IL; grandchildren, Donna (Mike) Freemole of Salt Lake City, UT; Paula (Mark) Wykoff of Springfield, IL; Tammy (Todd) Altman of Taylorville, IL; Sarah (Jonathan) Spurling-Hughes of Amherst, NY; Rachel L. Spurling of Sarasota, FL; Samuel F. Spurling of Minocqua, WI; and Robert T. Spurling of Taylorville, IL; great-grandchildren, Julia and Mark Jr. Wykoff of Springfield, IL; Genevieve Smith of Salt Lake City, UT; and Ainsley Altman of Taylorville, IL; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Christine was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands, and her brother, Monroe Daykin.
Funeral services will be held Monday, July 27, 2015, at 10:00 a.m. at Sutton Memorial Home in Taylorville with Pastor Becky Lembke officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery in Taylorville, IL. Visitation will be held Sunday, July 26, 2015, from 3:00-6:00 p.m. at Sutton Memorial Home in Taylorville.
