Douglas L. Garwood

 

Douglas L. Garwood, 72, of Stonington passed away at 3:44 P.M. on Saturday, January 28, 2017 at Decatur Memorial Hospital. He was born on February 8, 1944 in Taylorville, the son of Harold L. and Lillian (Kerns) Garwood. He married Alice Elizabeth “Betsy” Stout on August 25, 1973 in State College, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Stonington High School in 1962. In 1966 he earned his B.S. in Agricultural Science and in 1968 his M.S. in Agronomy from the University of Illinois, where he was a member of Kappa Delta Rho Fraternity. He received his Ph.D. in Genetics from Penn State University in 1973. He then served as faculty at Penn State as an Associate Professor, teaching plant breeding and also conducting sweet corn research. In 1980, he and Betsy returned to Stonington to join the family Golden Harvest seed corn and soybean business, Garwood Seed Company, and he continued to remain active in agriculture throughout his lifetime. He always enjoyed keeping up to date on scientific, economic, and agricultural trends and sharing his knowledge with others. He was a member of the Christian County Farm Bureau, Illinois Corn Growers Association, and was active with the Christian County Extension Office. He was a member of Old Stonington Baptist Church and served as secretary and treasurer of the Old Stonington Cemetery Association for many years. He was a fan of Illini and Penn State sports and the St. Louis Cardinals. Most of all he was a kind, thoughtful, and loving son, husband, father, and grandfather.

Doug is survived by his wife: Betsy Garwood of Stonington; son: Mark Garwood (Candice) of Canton, Michigan; daughter: Karen McMeel (Michael) of Chicago; grandchildren: Eli Garwood, Nora Garwood, and Andrew McMeel; step-grandchildren: Michael McMeel, Ryan McMeel, and Thomas McMeel; and several cousins and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and infant daughter: Amy Garwood.

A funeral service will be held at 10 A.M. on Friday, February 3, 2017 at McClure Funeral Home in Taylorville with Rev. Billy Bob Howard officiating. Visitation will be on Thursday from 5 until 7 P.M. in the funeral home. Burial will be in the Old Stonington Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Old Stonington Cemetery Association or the Old Stonington Baptist Church. McClure Funeral Home and Cremation Services is assisting the family with arrangements.
