Robert J. “Bobby” Swiney, 47, of Taylorville passed away at 6:15 p.m. on Sunday, April 30, 2017 at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield.
He was born on June 12, 1969 in Taylorville, the son of Donald H “Pete” and Teresa (Stout/Timmerman) Swiney. Bobby graduated from Taylorville High School in 1987 where he played in the band and from Eastern Illinois University with a double major in Political Science and Journalism. In 1995 he earned his Law Degree from Oklahoma City University and was admitted into the Bar in November of that year. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus Council 2120 in Taylorville and American Legion, Edwin Corpin Post 905 in Kincaid, and the Illinois Bar Association. In high school Bobby worked at Lakeshore Golf Course. He worked as the Public Defender in Shelby County, Conflict Public Defender in Christian County, had his own private law practice and performed legal work for collection firms.
He is survived by his mother: Teresa Swiney of Taylorville; brother: Donald H Swiney II (Dawn) of Pana; nieces and nephews: Stephen Swiney (Layney), Scott Swiney, and Rachel Swiney; great nieces and nephews: Adalyn Swiney, Westyn Swiney, and Emersyn Swiney; aunts and uncles: Becky Edwards (Gene) of Taylorville; Bruce Timmerman (Debbie) and family of Indianapolis, Mark Timmerman (Mary) and family of Oveido, Florida, Betty Heninger and family of Havre, Montana, Leo T Swiney (Kay) and family of Owaneco, Duane Swiney of Taylorville, Helen Bricker and family of Taylorville, Paul Swiney (Andi) and family of Taylorville, Janet Stephens and family of Taylorville, Kathy Ricci (Robert) of Taylorville, Leah Kuntz (Bill) of Weaver, Iowa, and Sharron Cottrell of Viola, Iowa; and great aunt: Rosalie Gorden and family of Taylorville. He was preceded in death by his father, grandparents, and uncle: Bill Timmerman.
A funeral mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, May 4, 2017 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Taylorville with Monsignor David Lantz officiating. Burial will take place at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Assumption. Visitation will be held from 4 until 7 p.m. on Wednesday at the church in Taylorville.
