Gladys E. Merkel, 103, of Nokomis, passed away on Tuesday, April 3, 2018 at 9:30 a.m. at Heritage Health Care Center in Pana, IL. She was born on September 20, 1914 in rural Bingham, IL the daughter of Homer and Dora (Matthews) Cole. She married Chester Merkel on March 6, 1937 in Nokomis and he preceded her in death on November 29, 1992. She worked as a homemaker and was a member of the United Methodist Church of Nokomis.  

She is survived by her Son: Loren E. (Phyllis) Merkel of Pana, IL; Daughter: Barbara (Bill) Kook of Pana, IL; Grandchildren: Christine Flynn of St. Charles, IL; Karen Kook of Chicago, IL; Brian Merkel of Belgrade, MO; Great-Grandson: Gunnar Merkel of Potos, MO; Several Nieces, Nephews and Cousins. She was preceded in death by her Parents, Husband, four sisters, four brothers and 1 grandson.

Visitation will be held on Friday, April 6, 2018 from 9:00-11:00 a.m. at the United Methodist Church of Nokomis with the funeral immediately following the visitation starting at 11:00 a.m. at the church with Pastor Steve Williams Officiating. Burial will be held in Nokomis Cemetery in Nokomis, IL.
