Ronnie L. Watkins

Ronnie L. Watkins, 67 of Taylorville (formerly of Pleasant Plains), lost his battle against cancer at 7:32 a.m. Thursday, September 27, 2018. Ron was born on June 1, 1951, in Springfield, the son of William and Marcella (Willis) Watkins. He served his country proudly in the U.S. Army Military Police, retiring in 1992 after 20 years. He then worked for the State of Illinois, retiring a second time in 2014. Ron married Shelia Gipson on March 28, 2008 in Taylorville, and she survives. Ron truly enjoyed life, whether riding his Harley, camping, or fishing, he always enjoyed the time he spent with his family and friends. He had a big heart that will be sorely missed.

Along with his loving wife, Shelia Watkins, Ron is survived by his daughters: Sarah (Jay) Vercilotti of Chandler, IN; Susi (Brett) Lopez of San Antonio, TX; Laura Calvert of Nokomis; Sons: Scott Watkins of Springfield; Robert Watkins of Bamburg, Germany; Erick Watkins of Bamburg, Germany; Brian Calvert of Shelbyville; 14 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; brother: David (Connie) Watkins of New Berlin; sisters: Sandy (Ray) Barton of Springfield; Becky (Rod) Raps of Kansas City, MO; and Beth (Bob) Withers of Cantrall.

Ron was preceded in death by his parents, William and Marcella Watkins; grandparents: Henry & Lettie Willis and Elmer & Frances Watkins; several aunts, uncles, and one niece.

It was Ronnie’s request to be cremated. A committal service will be held at a later date at Camp Butler National Cemetery, with Military Honors. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in his memory to: the Alzheimer’s Association.
