Lawrence L.C. Caldwell

Lawrence “L.C.” Caldwell, 103 of Taylorville passed away on Friday, February 15, 2019 at 1:18 a.m. at Life’s Journey Senior Living Center in Taylorville. He was born on June 22, 1915 in Milltown, KY the Son of Joseph and Etta (Dohoney)Caldwell.  He married Clara L. Peters on May 18, 1938 in Greenville, KY and she preceded him in death on April 4, 2007. He started out as a Chef at Kings Café in 1931 on the Taylorville Square and then later the Chef for 47 years at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Taylorville, IL where he finally retired at age 95. After retirement he loved to play golf, hunt, fish, planted a large garden, and he loved to take long walks. L.C. won a nationwide sandwich contest where he won a fully paid trip to New York City staying at the hotel Pierre. He also won $500 for his 3rd place sandwich- Cheese Barbecue. He was a World War II war hero serving from 1942-1945 in the United States Army 82nd Airborne and 13th Airborne Glider Division. He also served in the European Theater of Operation and was fortunate to go on the honor flight in 2015. L.C. was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Taylorville, IL, American Legion Post #73 and VFW post #4495.
He was survived by Nieces: Martha Etta (Bill) Kayse, Willie Katherine Sandusky, Caralynne (Chuck) Detmers, Lisbeth (Darrell) Garrett and Coleen (Larry) Murphy; Nephews: Richard (Donna) Caldwell, David (Charlene) Nettleship and many other nieces, nephews, Great- Nieces, Great-Nephews Great-Great Nieces and Great-Great Nephews. He is also survived by Sisters-in-law: Pat Peters of Taylorville, IL and Dorothy Peters of Taylorville, IL, Special Cousin: Jim (Margaret) Blakeman of Edinburg, IL and Special Niece: Pastor Cynthia Anderson of Rolling Meadows, IL.  L.C. was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Brothers: Caleb, Jim, Frank, Joe Jr., Twyman and Sisters: Cecil, Carol and Sally.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 20, 2019 from 9:00-10:00 a.m. at The First United Methodist Church in Taylorville. The funeral service will follow the visitation starting at 10:00 a.m. at The First United Methodist Church in Taylorville with Pastor Becky Lembke officiating. Burial will be held in Oak Hill Cemetery in Taylorville, IL with military graveside honors.
