Virgil W. Gilpin

Virgil W. Gilpin, 94 of Taylorville passed away on Friday, March 8, 2019 at 10:03 p.m. at Prairie Rose Health Care Center in Pana, Ill. He was born on September 13, 1924 in Taylorville, Ill. the son of Marion and Hattie (Worley) Gilpin. He married Betty Webster on January 29, 1947 in Taylorville, Ill. and she preceded him in death. Virgil Worked as a coal miner and he was a member of the United Mine workers, National Rifle Association and VFW Post # 4495 in Taylorville. Virgil was a WWII Navy veteran and a purple heart recipient. He loved to hunt and fish, and was an avid collector. He also enjoyed teh game of baseball and was a life-long Cubs fan. Virgil coached baseball for the Red Bland Little League for many years.

He is survived by his sons: William (Laura) Virgil Gilpin of Taylorville, Ill. and Scott (Karen) Carroll Gilpin of Arizona; daughters: Rebecca (Norris) Hill of Taylorville, Ill.; Nine Grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren and several Nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, sisters: Veda Millman and Louise Wareham; brother Donald Gilpin.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 13, 2019 from 4:00-6:00 p.m. at Sutton Memorial Home in Taylorville. Following the visitation Virgil will be cremated and there will be a graveside service at a later date in Oak Hill Cemetery in Taylorville.
