George (Alan) Franklin

George (Alan) Franklin went to meet the Lord on April 5, 2020 at his home In Morrisonville, IL surrounded by family.
Alan was born May 27, 1942 in Taylorville, IL to parents, Galen and Ruth Franklin. He was raised on their farm and attended school in Morrisonville, IL.  Alan joined the United States Air Force, where he was stationed at Cannon AFB and served as a Chaplain’s Assistant in Vietnam.  After his time in active duty, Alan joined the 183d Air National Guard where he retired as a First Sergeant.  Upon returning from Vietnam, he attended Illinois State University, earning his B.S. in Agriculture with a teaching certificate. 


Alan and wife, Bonny (Leinen), were married on Aug 10, 1968, and celebrated 50 years of marriage.  They were a team--teachers, dancing partners and travelers; traveling across the U.S. and Europe. They lived on the Leinen Centennial Farm in Christian County all of their married life.  They were proud parents of Alana Sue Franklin and Alison (Ryan) Jacobs.  Alan boasted of attending so many school activities for his girls, and later school activities for his beloved grandchildren, Meana and Mason Jacobs. Alan loved horses and shared that love with his daughters and grandchildren.
Alan had many careers, each of which surrounded himself with family.  Whether farming with his brothers, selling insurance with his sister, or working at the Illinois State Fair with his daughters and nephew, Alan always committed himself and was a notorious hard worker. Alan eventually retired as a school teacher to become a full-time grandparent.  
Alan never met a stranger. He was an active member of his community and a member of the Morrisonville United Methodist Church, where he served as a trustee.  He was a Shriner, Mason, and member of Eastern Star. He was part of the Morrisonville American Legion and VFW Post 755, where he coordinated weekly dances and a New Year’s Eve ball. Alan also served as a volunteer EMT in Morrisonville where he was able to continue to fulfill his need of selfless service. 

 

Alan is proceeded in death by his wife, parents and Sister Donna and Brother Richard.  He is survived by his daughters, grandchildren, sisters- Cheri (Royce) VanGerpen, Shirley Jones, Brother Galen Lee (Elaine) Franklin and 20 nieces and nephews.

 

Private family graveside service and a celebration of life will be held at a future time.  

 

McClure Funeral Home and Cremation Services in Taylorville is assisting the family with arrangements.  

 

Memorials can be given to the Morrisonville Food Pantry and Morrisonville Ambulance in his honor.
