Keith Albert Helfer

Keith Albert Helfer, age 85, of Taylorville, departed this life on April 13, 2020. Born in Taylor Springs, IL, on October 25, 1934, he was the son of the late Allie M. and Catherine Z. (Perrigo) Helfer. Keith attended Taylorville schools; he was in the U.S. Navy from 1954-1958 and served aboard the USS General A. E. Anderson, based in Guam. Keith was employed at Caterpillar Tractor Company in Decatur, IL, and later at Freeman Crown Mine at Farmersville, IL. Keith enjoyed traveling. He was an avid sports fan, attending many area high school, U of I, and professional games. His favorite team was the St. Louis Cardinals. In retirement Keith was active with the Red Cross. He helped with food distribution in New York after the 9/11 attack, again in 2003 after Hurricane Isabel struck Virginia, and in 2005 after Hurricane Katrina in Louisiana. Keith was a member of AMVETS and Tyrian Lodge #333 AF & AM, Springfield.  


Keith was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Erma Mundy.  He is survived by sisters Elaine (Thomas) Taylor, Wisconsin Rapids, WI; Mary-Kay (Charles) Stanfield, Crete, IL; by stepchildren Lee Anne Kinsella, Brad Kinsella, Pat Kinsella, and Scott Kinsella. He is further survived by brother-in-law Gene Mundy, Phoenix, AZ; several nieces and nephews, and several step grandchildren and step great grandchildren.


The family wishes to thank Keith’s many longtime friends for their concern and support during his treatment for cancer.
