Charles J. Garner

Charles J. Garner, 92 of Taylorville, passed away at 1:15p.m. on Sunday, May 10, 2020 at Taylorville Care Center.  He was born on September 20, 1927 in Roodhouse, the son of Charles H. and Gertrude M. (Greenwalt) Garner.  Chuck was a veteran of the U.S. Army.  He married Joann Smith on Easter Sunday in 1952 at the Taylorville Christian Church.  Chuck began his working career as a boilermaker for the C&IM railroad before working at Allis Chalmers.  He retired after working for Allied Van Lines for over 35 years.  Chuck was an avid outdoorsman, he loved to hunt, fish, and run the rivers on his boat.  He was a founding member of the Taylorville Rifle Club and gave back to his community by being a founding member of the Taylorville Underwater Search and Rescue Team.  He was also a member of the VFW and the American Legion.  

 

He is survived by his wife: Joann Garner; daughter: Susan Jackson, husband Alan; and grandson: Blake Garner Jackson, wife Melanie; and great-granddaughter: Charlotte Jackson all of Taylorville.  He was preceded in death by his parents, and sisters: Eleanor Kammerer and Chloe Waller.    

 

Chuck will be cremated, and a graveside memorial service will be held at 10a.m. on Wednesday, May 13, 2020 in Oak Hill Cemetery with Rev. Bill Kerns officiating.  Memorials may be made to Davis Memorial Christian Church, Christian County Animal Control, or American Legion Post 73.
