Robert E. Fleming

Robert E. Fleming, 88, of Taylorville, passed away at 3:56 p.m. on Monday, August 3, 2020 at his residence.
Robert was born on May 15, 1932 in rural Christian County, the son of Steven Gatton and Gladys Fleming.  He married Shirley Absher on June 7, 1957 in Hebron, and she preceded him in death in 1984.  Robert then married Darlene Porter on June 20, 1987 in Taylorville, and she preceded him in death September 10, 2009.


Robert proudly served our country in the United States Navy.  He served in the Korean War as a gunner.  After his honorable discharge from the Navy, Robert worked many years at the Freeman Coal Company, where he retired.  He also farmed the family farm for the majority of his life. Robert was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Taylorville, and he served as the Commander of the V.F.W. Post #4495 twice.  He was an avid Green Bay Packers and St. Louis Cardinals fan, and he enjoyed carpentry and gardening.  Most of all, Robert enjoyed the time that he spent with his family.


He was also preceded in death by his parents; and his brothers, Gerald and Edward Fleming.


Robert is survived by his sons, Robert J. Fleming of Tovey, Jeffrey A. (wife, Susan) Fleming of Taylorville, Todd M. (wife, Suzanne) Fleming of Cape Coral, FL, and David Jon (wife, Wendy) Fleming of Taylorville; grandchildren, Jenny, Megan, Kiley, Chelsea, Jackson, Emily, Braden, Kalene, Kourtni, and Shaun; great grandchildren, Cameron, Liam, Chazden, Oliver, Crew, and Connor; several nieces and nephews; and his beloved lap dog, Nick.


Private graveside ceremonies with military honors will be held at Glen Haven Memorial Gardens in Taylorville.


The family has entrusted Shafer-Perfetti & Assalley Funeral Home in Taylorville with ceremonies.
