Philip Martin

Philip Martin, 89 of Springfield, died at 12:08 p.m., Friday, October 16, 2020 at Lewis Memorial Christian Village in Springfield. 


Mr. Martin was born on May 18, 1931 in Lincoln, to Sidney & Marguerite (Fisher) Martin. He attended Lanphier High School in Springfield and graduated in 1949. During his high school years, he showed sheep for the FFA. Mr. Martin, the first in his family to attend college, completed his undergraduate work at ISU, and later attended the U of I for his Masters in Art Education. He married Nancy Ann Campbell on August 21, 1951, and she preceded him in death after almost 66 years of marriage on June 27, 2017. Mr. Martin started the Art Program at Taylorville High School in 1953, and he retired in 1991. He taught as a substitute teacher for 11 years after retiring. He also taught adult art education classes at Lincoln Land College. In addition to his love of teaching art, Mr. Martin enjoyed flying, was a licensed pilot, and inspired many others to fly. Many will remember him for moonlighting as a sign painter, his mural work and his graphic design. Mr. Martin was a member of the Illinois Art Education Association. 


Mr. Martin is survived by his three children: Pamela Martin of Springfield; Jane DeBerry of Taylorville; Christopher Martin of Springfield; and his grandsons: Drew Martin, Blake Martin, Alexander Rickman, Brandon Rickman. 

 

In addition to his wife Nancy, Mr. Martin was preceded in death by his parents; his stepfather, Frank Fisher, sister, Shirley Gilmore, brother Carlis Martin, and one nephew, Michael Martin. 

 

Following Mr. Martin’s wishes, a private inurnment will take place at Oak Hill Cemetery.
