Carl E. “Doc” Mortland, 77 of Taylorville, passed away at 5:36am on Monday, March 22, 2021 at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield. He was born on May 21, 1943 in Bloomington, the son of Harvey and Maxine (Whitehouse) Mortland. He married Connie Kastelic on August 3, 1984 in Pana. Doc was a graduate of Moore High School in Farmer City and Bailey Tech in St. Louis. Prior to retirement, Doc was co-owner and operator of Prairieland Fertilizer in Stonington. Doc served in the Illinois Army National Guard and was a proud Mason and Shriner. As a member of the Ansar Shriner’s Tractor Club, he enjoyed driving his antique Oliver 70 in community parades. He was also a member of the American Legion and VFW. Doc was an avid fisherman and enjoyed hunting, trap shooting, gardening, and rooting for the Cubs. He loved to cook and barbeque, always eager to try new recipes and share his creations with family and friends. He looked forward to playing cards with his friends and his daily visit to TFC to chat with the guys. Doc never met a stranger. He had a great sense of humor and genuinely enjoyed life. His favorite motto was “If it is to be, it’s up to me”. Doc will be dearly missed by his family and friends.
He is survived by his wife: Connie Mortland of Taylorville; children: Kerrie Hudson and Jennifer Mortland both of Lexington, Kentucky; grandchildren: Kainan, Chase (fiancé Savannah), and Bailey Hudson all of Lexington, Kentucky; brother: Mike Williams of Gilbertsville, Kentucky; brother-in-law: and sister-in-law: John and Susan Kastelic of Katy, Texas; sister-in-law: Anelle Kastelic of Taylorville; nieces: Misty (Brady) Hudson of LeRoy, Brittni (Dominic) DeMoro of Kansas City, Missouri; nephew: Zachary Kastelic (Kalyn) of Kansas City, Missouri; great nephews: Garett Hudson of LeRoy and Beau DeMoro of Kansas City, Missouri, and many cousins. Doc was preceded in death by his parents; stepfather: Paul Williams; and brother-in-law: Ronald Kastelic.
Doc will be cremated, and a graveside memorial service will take place. The service will begin at 1pm on Friday, March 26, 2021 at Old Stonington Cemetery with Veteran’s Honors, followed by Masonic Rites, and concluded with a service officiated by Deacon Scott Whitehouse.
