Charles Wayne Riggs

Charles Wayne Riggs, 77, of Taylorville, passed away at 1:49 a.m. on Wednesday, June 23, 2021 at HSHS St. John’s Hospital in Springfield.

Charles was born January 30, 1944 in Missouri, the son of E.C. Riggs and Alline Hager. He was raised in Missouri by his mother and step-father, Claude Cloninger, where he learned the value of hard work while picking cotton. Charles moved to Taylorville for work, where he started at Bodendike Tool Company in the foundry. He moved on to Continental Grain where he was employed for over 12 years. Charles then went to work construction for his uncle, Bill Hager, and then eventually for himself.

As a child, Charles received care from the Shriners Hospital in Missouri to treat polio. This led to his generous spirit, especially in helping sick children. He was an avid blood donor too, receiving many pins for the amount and frequency of his donations. Charles loved fishing, watching Western movies and professional wrestling, and he enjoyed woodworking. He made many picture frames, chests, and other pieces of furniture over the years.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Connie Cloninger; brothers, Derrel and David Cloninger; and his daughter, Amy’s mother, Karen Kader.

Charles is survived by his companion of over 25 years, JoMarie Warren of Taylorville; children, Matt (Tracie) Riggs of Kincaid, Amy (Brian) Taylor of Taylorville, Mark Riggs of Taylorville, Shannon (Robert) Morrison of Stonington, Kris (Stella) Warren of Taylorville, and Matt (Erica) Warren of Stonington; grandchildren, Carrie Willis, Sean Morrison, Matthew Riggs, Jr., Kidd Morrison, Ariana Morrison, Haylee Riggs, Aly Warren, Cole Warren, Addison Herman, D.J.
