Donald E. Blakeman

Donald E. Blakeman, 88 of Taylorville, formerly of Stonington, passed away on Wednesday, March 15, 2023 at Taylorville Care Center.  He was born on October 13, 1934 in May Township, the son of Wilbur and Mabel (Moomey) Blakeman.  He married Mary Agnes DeMichael on June 27, 1959 in the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Stonington.  Mary preceded Donald in death on July 23, 2019, shortly after celebrating 60 years of marriage.  Donnie worked for Caterpillar for many years and after retirement worked for several area farmers.  He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and was active with the Stonington American Legion where he served as Adjutant for many years.  He served his community in a number of other ways including as President of the Stonington School Board, Stonington Village Board, and the Stonington Fire Department.  He was an active member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church. He played softball for several years, and along with his brother Leroy, umpired games for 20 years.  Donnie was a fan of the St. Louis Cardinals, enjoyed playing cards with his friends at the Legion and watching Gameshow Network, and never passed up a bowl of ice cream.  More than anything, he loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. 

He is survived by his children: John F. Blakeman (Shannon) of Taylorville, Joseph Blakeman of Springfield, Michael Blakeman (Denise) of Taylorville, Daniel Blakeman of Stonington, Thomas Blakeman of Stonington, and Mary “Missy” Wemhoener (Todd) of Belleville; grandchildren: Lauren Blakeman, John R. Blakeman, Katie Wemhoener, Dustin Blome, Aaron Blome, and Ashley Kochniarczyk; several great grandchildren; sister: Marilyn Wattelet; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.  He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; infant daughter: Margaret; 4 brothers and 4 sisters. 

The funeral Mass for Mr. Blakeman will take place at noon on Monday, March 20, 2023 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Stonington with Fr. Piotr Kosk officiating.  Visitation will be held from 10:00a.m. until the time of the service at noon, in the church on Monday.  Burial, with military honors, will take place at Old Stonington Cemetery.  Memorial donations may be made to the Stonington American Legion or the Stonington Fire Department.  McClure Funeral Home and Cremation Services in Taylorville is assisting the family with arrangements.  Memories of Donnie, or condolences to his family, may be shared online at www.mcclurefuneralhome.com.
