Lester Zumwalt

Lester Zumwalt, 99 of Pana, passed away on Friday, June 30, 2023, at 6:30 p.m. at Pana Community Hospital in Pana, Illinois. He was born on October 16, 1923, in Lincoln County, MO the son of George and Ann (Deloney) Zumwalt. In May of 1949, he married Darlene Sackett and they had three children. He later married Phyllis Dudra, a long-time friend and companion. They later divorced. 

He is survived by his children: Dale Zumwalt of Rehoboth, MA; Janet Vieback of Pana, IL; Don Zumwalt of Elko, NV; grandchildren: Kelly Zumwalt; Lisa Zumwalt; Scott Zumwalt; Zachery Ray; Natalie Clifton; nine great-grandchildren; sister-in-law: Isabelle Zumwalt; nieces: Barbara Waggoner; Eloise Slaughter; Karen Graves; Bonnie McClemen; Mary Kay Miller and nephew: George Zumwalt. He was preceded in death by his parents, grandson: Berry Zumwalt; brothers: Orville Zumwalt and Melvin Zumwalt; sister: Nellie Galloway and nephew: Bud Zumwalt. 

Lester joined the Army in 1946 and served during WWII. After his tour in the Army, Lester went back to school and earned his teaching degree. He taught school in Pana for many years. In the early 70’s, he purchased the local skating rink which became PLA-MOR Skate. People of all ages enjoyed the time spent at the rink. It was a safe, fun place to go. In 1986, the skating rink became PLA-MOR Danceland; the best dancehall around with live music, both country and ballroom dancing. Lester also loved to play golf. He played lots of different courses, but especially loved to play the Ramsey Golf Course, where he shot a record 27! During his last couple years, Lester enjoyed riding his scooter to Pana Park where he would often visit with former students and others who would stop by to say hello.  

Lester will be cremated and a celebration of life will be held on Saturday, August 26, 2023. Details to be announced at a later date.  

McClure Funeral Home in Taylorville is assisting the family with arrangements.
