Don E. Metsker

Don E. Metsker, 89 of Owaneco passed away at 9:28p.m. on Monday, August 28, 2023, at Taylorville Memorial Hospital.  He was born on October 1, 1933, in Pana, the son of Wayne I. and Edna V. (Morgan) Metsker.  He married Margaret Ann Singler on March 10, 1957, in the St. Louis Catholic Church in Nokomis, and she preceded him in death on December 21, 2015.  Don served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict as an operating engineer.  Don was a lifelong farmer in the Owaneco area and was extremely proud of his Centennial Farm.  He was a 55-year member of the Masonic Lodge and a member of the Ansar Shrine and Ag Corps as well as Davis Memorial Christian Church.  Don lived an active life, he enjoyed flying as a private pilot, dancing, and traveling.  He was proud of his family’s legacy of competing in rodeos for 3 generations. 

He is survived by his children: Nancy Handegan (Gerald) of Taylorville, Deborah Jo Metsker-Boydstun (John) of Berwick, Catherine Metsker of Carlock, Dennis Metsker (Christine) of Taylorville, Janice Metsker-Galarza (Jorge) of Los Fresnos, TX, and Timothy Metsker (Kimberly) of Owaneco; grandchildren: Nathan Handegan, Veronica Waggoner (Seth), Ashley M. Swanson (Taylor), Logan Henry (Rodney), Brant Basting (Alyson), Reid Basting, Bryce Basting, Ben Metsker (Kaitlyne), Cody Metsker (Samantha), Ty Metsker (Jessa), Dawniele Hilbig (Matthew), Madison Bahner (Derek), and Austin Metsker; 12 great grandchildren; sisters-in-law: Doris Seal and Barbara Niebrugge.  He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and brother: Robert Metsker.

The funeral service for Don will take place at 11:00a.m. on Friday, September 1, 2023, at Davis Memorial Christian Church with Pastor Dennis Metsker officiating.  Visitation will take place from 5:00p.m. until 7:00p.m. on Thursday at the church with Masonic rites at 7:00p.m. and one hour prior to the funeral on Friday.  Burial will be in the Buckeye Cemetery in rural Owaneco.  Memorials may be made to the Davis Memorial Christian Church.  McClure Funeral Home and Cremation Services in Taylorville is assisting the family with arrangements.  Memories of Don, or condolences to his family, may be shared online at www.mcclurefuneralhome.com.
