James Eugene “Geneo” McKinney, 56 of Springfield, passed away at 6:20p.m. on Tuesday, March 5, 2024, at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield.  He was born on February 4, 1968, in Springfield, the son of Charles E. and Vicky M. (Estes) McKinney.  He married Kimberly Miller on July 25, 2015, in Effingham.  Geneo graduated from Riverton High School in 1986.  He worked for Landmark Ford for over 25 years and later as a mental health technician for the State of Illinois.  He loved spending time outdoors, especially while working in his garden.  Geneo had a love of toys such as motorcycles, dune buggies, and boats.  He was very handy and enjoyed working on anything.  He will be remembered as a hard worker who had a big heart. 

He is survived by his wife: Kim McKinney of Taylorville; mother: Vicky M. McKinney of Riverton; children: Matthew E. McKinney of Thayer and Maria Yager (Taylor) of Pawnee; granddaughter: Abagail Marie McKinney of Cantrall; sister: Sue Minnix of Riverton; and niece and nephews: Jason M. Minnix, James A. Williams, and Madelyn P. Williams. 

A funeral service for Geneo will take place at 11a.m. on Wednesday, March 13, 2024, at McClure Funeral Home in Taylorville with Pastor Gerald McPhillips officiation.  The visitation will be held one hour prior to the service on Wednesday at the funeral home and the burial will take place at Oak Hill Cemetery in Taylorville.  Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.  McClure Funeral Home and Cremation Services in Taylorville is assisting the family with arrangements.
