Gary Lin McWard, 71 of Taylorville, passed away at 6:03 p.m. on Tuesday, April 23, 2024, surrounded by his family in his home.  He was born on August 18, 1952, in Taylorville, the son of James and Dorothy (Burke) McWard.  He married Brenda Pieper on February 13, 2004.  Gary proudly served our country with a distinguished career with the United States Marine Corps., serving in Desert Storm and stationed in California, Hawaii, and Okinawa, Japan.  In 2000 he retired from military service as a Gunnery Sergeant, completing a 22-year career.  Gary was very proud of his time serving his country and was passionate the rest of his life about supporting and honoring others who served.  Following his time in the service he managed Jordy’s Restaurant and owned and operated the American Tap in Taylorville.  Gary will be remembered for his love of people and was affectionately known by his friends as “Mac” or “Gunny”.  He loved playing pool and was a fan of the St. Louis Cardinals and Fighting Illini basketball. 

He is survived by his wife: Brenda McWard of Taylorville; children: Angela (Greg) Wallace of Bellevue, Nebraska, Christine (Jesse) Hundley of Springfield, Samantha (Brandon) Overton of Taylorville, Timothy (Leanne) McWard of Mark, Illinois, Frank McWard of Taylorville, David (Sarah) Sims of Morrisonville, Rebecca (Mike) Childers of Taylorville, and Casey (Kasey) Donovan of O’Fallon, Missouri; 19 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his parents and brother: James Michael McWard.

Gary will be cremated, and a graveside memorial service, with military honors, will take place at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, May 3, 2024, at Camp Butler National Cemetery in Springfield.  Memorials may be made to the McWard family.  McClure Funeral Home and Cremation Services in Taylorville is assisting the family with arrangements.
