John R. Mentz, 83 of Taylorville passed away on Wednesday, June 12, 2024, at 5:56 a.m. in Dawson, IL. He was born on April 18, 1941, in Brocton, IL, the son of Walter E and Lela (Miller) Mentz. John married Shirley P. Thompson on October 2, 1982, in Pawnee, IL and she preceded him in death on November 22, 2011. John was a member of the Taylor Springs VFW and the Elnora Indiana Mountain Cur Association. He loved hunting, fishing, guns, trap shooting and being outdoors. John was a veteran of the United States Army and served in Vietnam.

John is survived by his Daughter Michelle Wright of Tovey, IL; Sons: Bob (Mamie) Campbell and Fred (Corrie) Campbell; Grandchildren: Michael, Kourtnee, Kinsey, Kylie, Cody, Chase, Holt, Newt, Camren, Lauren, Lydia and Lindsay; Ten Great-Grandchildren; Brother: Roger Mentz of Texas and Companion and special friend: Pat Petitt. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Daughter: Stacy Manion, Grandson: Stephen, siblings: James, Susan and a brother in infantcy.

It was John’s wishes to be cremated and a graveside service will be held at a later date in Camp Butler National Cemetery in Springfield, IL.

Memorials may be made to Christian County Animal Control or VFW Post 4495 in Taylorville.
