Donald Fredrick Spurling died June 17, 2024, in Springfield, Illinois. He was born in Taylorville, Illinois on October 28, 1941, the son of S. F. "Fritz" Spurling and Christine Spurling Brooks.

 

He enjoyed cooking, fishing and reading, in that order, as well as Bluegrass, jazz and Jimmy Buffett.

 

He graduated from the University of Illinois with a master's degree in mechanical engineering and enjoyed a successful career in engineering consulting.

 

Don is survived by his wife Nancy, Bloomington, IL, daughters Sarah Spurling-Hughes (John), Springfield, IL and Rachel Ackroyd (lan), Bloomington, IL; and daughters from a previous marriage to Olympia "Bunny" Dyer, Donna Smith (Michael Freemole), Salt Lake City, UT and Paula Wykoff (Mark), Springfield, IL. Also surviving are grandchildren Genevieve Smith, Julia Wykoff (Chad Zoelzer), Mark Wykoff, Jr, and Fox Ackroyd, great grandsons Jameson and Dyer Zoelzer and brother Gary Spurling (Brenda), Taylorville, IL.

 

A graveside service for friends and family will be held at Oak Hill Cemetery in Taylorville on Sunday afternoon, October 13 at 2:00 PM. Following the service, all are invited to a gathering at 116 West Market Street, Taylorville (South Side of the Square).

 

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Michael J. Fox Foundation in honor of Don.
