Elmer Lloyd Harmon

Elmer Lloyd Harmon was born October 4, 1931, in Greenwood Township, Christian County, Illinois to parents Lloyd Estel Harmon and Fern (Milslagle) Harmon, one of eleven children. He passed away on October 12, 2024, at Taylorville Memorial Hospital. 

He went to the Noble country school for 8 years then went to Taylorville High School in 1945, graduating in 1949. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in January 1951 and was discharged November 1954, serving on the USS Tabberer DE-418 during the Korean Conflict. In March 1955 he started working at Borg-Warner in Decatur until March 1959. He married Georgia “Jody” Lowrance on November 6, 1955, at the First Presbyterian Church, Taylorville, Illinois. Elmer was a proud father and grandfather to 4 children, 7 grandchildren, and 1 great grandchild. 

Elmer and Jody moved to rural Edinburg, Illinois in September 1958 to farm his Great-Uncle Bill Harmon’s ground for 11 years. They then moved to a Northern Trust farm in Greenwood Township for 17 years, retiring from farming in 1986. In “retirement” he continued to work for fertilizer companies until the age of 88. 

He was a Mason, a member of the Morrisonville American Legion Post, a life-long member of the First Presbyterian Church in Taylorville, and a multi-gallon blood donor. He served on the 4-H Ag Advisory Committee for many years, the 4-H Swine Superintendent for a decade, and was very active with his children’s and grandchildren’s years of raising and showing purebred hogs and Clydesdale horses. 

Elmer is survived by two sisters, Bertha Hill, and Donna Peters, four children, Randall (Lisa), Robert (Susan), Linda Jo, and William (Wendy), seven grandchildren, Gregory, Brianna (Zach), Katherine, Rachel (Siva), Cameron, Joshua (Emily), Mackenzie, one great-grandchild, Eloise, and another on the way. He was preceded in death by his wife Jody, his parents, five brothers, Russell, Wilbur, Lyle, John, and Charles, three sisters, Marilyn, Ruth and Norma. 

Elmer will be cremated, and memorial services are scheduled for Saturday, October 19, 2024, at 11 am at the First Presbyterian Church, Taylorville, Illinois, with visitation one hour prior to the service. Services will be conducted by Gerald McPhillips. McClure Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements. Memorial donations may be made to the Ovarian Cancer Research Alliance (OCRA) or the First Presbyterian Church of Taylorville.
