Alethea Joan Read, 88 of Decatur, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Monday, December 2, 2024, in her home.  She was born on September 9, 1936, in Chicago, the daughter of Hiram H and Lillian M. (Funderburk) Hardin.  Alethea graduated from Taylorville High School in 1954 and was a member of the Eastern Star for 67 years.  She married Roger O. Read on October 31, 1970, in Decatur, and he preceded her in death on January 10, 2004.  Alethea worked for many years in medical insurance billing.  She was an enthusiast of antique cars and enjoyed attending car shows.  Traveling was a favorite pastime of Alethea’s, and she enjoyed many trips to various destinations around the world. 

She is survived by her son: Gary Long (Tammy) of Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina; stepson: Bruce Read (Marguerite) of San Antonio, Texas; stepdaughter: Sandra Stiverson of Oak Island, North Carolina; 6 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sister: Dorothy Lamb; and brother: Gary Hardin.

Alethea will be cremated, and a graveside service will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, December 20, 2024, at Anderson Cemetery in rural Palmer with Pastor Seth Emerson officiating.  Family and friends may gather at 10:30 a.m. at McClure Funeral Home to proceed to the cemetery.  McClure Funeral Home and Cremation Services in Taylorville is assisting the family with arrangements.
