Granvel "Spud" Issac Nation

Granvel “Spud” Issac Nation, 95, of Taylorville, IL  passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 15, 2025, at HSHS St. John’s Hospital in Springfield.  He was born April 30, 1929, in Stonington, IL, the son of William I. and Cora Helen (Ashinhurst) Nation.  He married Mary Ann Jacobs on June 20, 1968, and she passed away July of 2008.  Later in life, Spud married Doris Vangeison in 2009, she passed away in September 2019. 

 

Surviving is his brother, Roscoe Nation; his sisters-in-law, Juanita Nation, Lorrie Nation, and Judy Jacobs; his grandchildren: Timothy, Stephen, Kyle, Trevor of Washington State; and his step-grandchildren: Kim Norman also of Washington State; as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins. 

 

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; his children, Tom and Donald; his brothers, Evert, Ira, Earl, Jack, Iven, Ernie, Robert, Jim, and Kenneth; his sisters, Uldien White and Florien Bailey.

 

Spud joined the United States Army on February 27, 1951, and served his county proudly during the Korean War. Spud worked as a funeral assistant for many years at Ater Funeral Home.  He also worked at Borg-Warner, Harrison Motors, Gorden Pontiac GMC, Bob Ridings, and operated a local gas station and his last job which he retired from in 2023, worked as an attendant at Car Wash City.  Spud was a member of Grace Baptist Church.  He enjoyed playing dominoes, farkel, and other games with family and friends. 

 

Visitation will be held on Monday, April 21, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. at Sutton Memorial Home in Taylorville.  A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. following visitation at the funeral home with Pastor Gerald McPhillips officiating.  Burial will be in Hall Cemetery in Blue Mound, IL with military honors.  Memorials in Spud’s name can be made to Grace Baptist Church.
