Sharon J Koonce

Sharon J Koonce, 78, of Taylorville passed away June 14, 2025, at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield.  

 

She was born on August 18, 1946, the daughter of Bennie Ellis Harmon and Margie Marie (Burke) Harmon. Sharon was a graduate of Taylorville High School, class of 1964. She married Raymon Koonce on March 28, 1970, and he preceded her in death on December 17, 1995. Sharon later obtained her degree at the California College for Respiratory Therapy in October of 1983. She worked at Taylorville Memorial Hospital in respiratory therapy for over 30 years, retiring in 2018. After her retirement, Sharon would volunteer at the hospital in the therapy department until the week before her passing.  

 

She was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Taylorville for 15+ years and was a member of the women’s bible study group. Sharon enjoyed gardening, playing cards, spending time with her family, meeting with her friends at McDonalds every Tuesday morning for breakfast, and her time with her faithful companion: Mac. 

 

Sharon is survived by her longtime companion: Gerald Frankie Veach, children: Kerry Rae Koonce and Ray Ellis Koonce, bonus children: Chris Veach and Casey Veach; grandchildren: Addison Poole, Khristopher Koonce, Sarah Morillo, Tristin Huddleston, Owen and Harper Veach great-grandchildren: Chloe, McKayla, and Jemma Poole, Sisters: Shirley Callaway and Carol Miller. 

 

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband: Raymond Koonce and daughter Lisa Morillo.  

 

Per Sharon’s wishes, cremation rites are to be accorded with a memorial visitation on June 27th, 2025, from 9:00am to 11:00 am at Calvary Baptist Church in Taylorville with a memorial service beginning immediately after visitation, also at the church. Inurnment will be at Oakhill cemetery following the service with pastor Chad Zueck officiating. A luncheon will be held at Calvary following the inurnment.
