Karen Ann Spurgeon, 79, of Kincaid, IL, passed away on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, at Springfield Memorial Hospital in Springfield, IL. She was born on February 23, 1946, in Taylorville, IL, the daughter of Roy Ernest Baranzelli and Gladys Mae Thomas. On May 19, 1973, she married Garry Spurgeon at the First United Methodist Church in Taylorville. They spent many loving years together before he preceded her in death on February 23, 2008.
Karen worked as a hairdresser for 42 years, working at Howards Beauty Salon as well as Rick’s Image and Design. She also worked for the Illinois Municipal League. Karen was strong in her faith and was an active member of both Tovey United Methodist Church and Midland United Methodist Church. She served on the church board and was a Sunday School teacher for several years. Karen was a 4-H leader and also served on the University of Illinois Extension Council of Christian County. Above all, she loved spending time with her family and is missed dearly.
Surviving is her daughter: Aimee (Randy) Forbes of Chatham, IL; grandchildren: Caden and Olivia Forbes both of Chatham, IL; sister: Christine (Joe) Broccardo of Palmer, IL; as well as several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, Karen was preceded in death by two brothers, David and Roy Baranzelli.
A visitation will be held on Monday, July 21, 2025, from 4:00-7:00 p.m. at Sutton Memorial Home in Taylorville, IL. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. at Midland United Methodist Church in Kincaid, IL, with Pastor Lindsey Young officiating. Interment will follow at Bethany Cemetery in Edinburg.
Memorials in Karen’s honor may be made to Midland United Methodist Church or to Refuge Ranch.
