John Paul (Jack) Sloan, 93, of Taylorville, passed away on July 11, 2025, at Taylorville Estates. He was born in a country farmhouse south of Morrisonville on May 22, 1932, the son of George and Mary (Nolan) Sloan. After graduating from Morrisonville High School in 1950, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps to fight in the Korean War. Following his time in the service, he attended and graduated from Southern Illinois University-Carbondale, where he met his future wife, Bernardine. They were married on June 13, 1959, in St. Louis, MO.
He then returned home to Morrisonville to buy an insurance agency and start a family. He continued his education by attending night classes at St. Louis University Law School and ultimately earned his law degree from La Salle University. In 1969, he moved his young family to Nokomis and raised them there.
He spent most of his adult life as an independent insurance agent and a farmer. His thirst for knowledge eventually led him to obtain a master's degree from the University of Illinois-Springfield. Following his retirement from insurance, he spent his time on the farm and with his wife, children, and grandchildren. He was a voracious reader and loved to share books with his family. He was a private person who rarely talked about himself or his accomplishments; he lived a simple life and led by example.
He loved his wife, his family, and his country. He possessed an unshakeable faith in God, whom he has now gone on to meet following the conclusion of his journey on Earth.
He is survived by Bernie, his wife of 66 years, children – Louis (Becky) Sloan, Byron (June) Sloan, Julia (Todd) Atkins, and George (Lisa) Sloan; as well as 15 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, siblings – Nolan, Georgia, Rosemary, Mary Cecilia, William, and Bernadine.
Funeral services were held at St. Maurice Catholic Church in Morrisonville on July 18, 2025, with burial in St. Maurice Cemetery. Arrangements were handled by McClure Funeral Home.
The family requests that memorials be directed to Christian County Meals on Wheels or the charity of their choice.
