Mary Lee Stickel, age 88, of Taylorville, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 26, 2025, at 6:28 a.m. at Hillsboro Health and Rehabilitation Center in Hillsboro, IL.
Mary was born on October 18, 1936, in Tennessee, the daughter of William Newberry and Edith (Lawrence). After the loss of her father, she moved with her family from Sikeston, Missouri, to Taylorville at the age of eight.
She married Donald Stickel on June 6, 1954, in Taylorville, IL, and they shared 63 loving years together. Mary took great pride in their marriage. They enjoyed traveling, camping, and cherishing time with their grandchildren. She lovingly cared for Donald at home until he passed on September 21, 2017.
Mary had a special eye for interior design and could transform any house into a beautiful home. She adored dogs—especially dachshunds—and was the proud owner of many special companions throughout her life, including Missy, Princess, Ginger, and Casey. Above all, Mary cherished her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and was known for hosting the best Christmas Eve parties. She was hardworking, generous, and always first to say, “I love you.” Nothing made her happier than time spent with family and friends.
She is survived by her children: Cheryl Prehn (Kent Crawford) of Taylorville, IL; Jeff Stickel of Taylorville, IL; and Alexis Tucker (Matt) of Taylorville, IL; grandchildren: Jacob Stickel, Kristen Brinkmann, Kylie Steverson, Kaylene Weller, and Amanda Stickel; sixteen adored great-grandchildren; sister Jean Ramsey (Chuck) of Decatur, IL; brother Edward Murphy (Joyce) of Centralia, IL; as well as numerous beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins. Her family also expresses sincere gratitude to Lois Adams, Mary’s caregiver in her final years, for her love and dedication to Mary.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, William Newberry and Edith Murphy; her husband, Donald Stickel; and brothers George Newberry and Thomas Murphy, Jr.
Private graveside services will be held at a later date at Oak Hill Cemetery in Taylorville.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Taylorville Food Pantry.
