Helen Covington, 95 of Stonington, passed away on Sunday, September 14, 2025, at Taylorville Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was born on September 17, 1929, in Taylorville, the daughter of Lloyd and Elsie (Traughber) Snyder. She married Richard Covington on December 3, 1949, and he preceded her in death on June 27, 2019. Helen graduated as Valedictorian from Stonington High School in 1947. For one summer while in high school, Helen learned Morse code while working for the railroad in White Heath during World War II. She worked as the secretary at Garwood Seed Company for many years. She was a member of the Stonington United Methodist Church where she served as organist for many years. She enjoyed watching St. Louis Cardinals baseball games and University of Illinois football and basketball games. She loved attending sporting events that her children and grandchildren were involved in. Helen and Richard enjoyed spending part of the winter in Gulf Shores, Alabama for several years.
She is survived by her children: Richard Covington Jr. (Jill) of Stonington, Jeannine Covington of Stonington, Vicki Furry (Jeff) of Normal, and Tom Covington (Cheryl) of Taylorville; grandchildren: Brent Covington of Ballwin, Missouri, Natalie Sutimek (Thay) of Bloomington, Kyle Furry (Margaret) of LaGrange, Megan Cocagne (Chase) of Verona, Wisconsin, and Matthew Covington (Tiffany) of Bartlett; great grandchildren: William, Jane, and Kate Covington, Mason, Graham, and Sophie Sutimek, Kendall, Reese, and Nora Cocagne, Joey and Vivian Furry, and Elle and Aidan Covington. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; granddaughter: Kate Covington; and brothers: Clayton Snyder and Lloyd Edward Snyder Jr.
The funeral service for Helen will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, September 19, 2025, at McClure Funeral Home in Taylorville with Pastor Brennan Hurley officiating. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the funeral and burial will be in the Old Stonington Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Stonington United Methodist Church. The family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to Dr. Richard DelValle, Dr. Mario Velasco, Transitions Hospice, and the staff at Springfield Memorial Hospital and Taylorville Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for their exceptional care for Helen.
