Larry L. Forbes, 82 of Stonington, passed away on Thursday, December 11, 2025, in his home. He was born on January 10, 1943, in Thompson Falls, Montana, the son of Bill Glen and Hazel (Trexler) Forbes. He married Charlene Crist-Gaither on February 14, 2001, in Vandalia. Larry retired from Wagner Castings where he worked for over 30 years and went on to become a semi-truck driver, driving over the road, and most recently for Doyle Brothers Trucking. He attended Stonington United Methodist Church. Larry will be remembered as a man whose hands and heart were always at work. He found his greatest joy outdoors—tending to his yard, shaping the land with his beloved Kubota tractor, and bringing beauty to life through his natural gift for design and craftsmanship. Whether he was building, fixing, or creating, Larry poured intention and care into every project. He cherished simple pleasures, especially a good cup of coffee and a Casey’s donut, and he rarely passed up a classic western or crime show, or a chance to listen to his favorite bluegrass music. His gentle spirit extended to all living creatures; he had a soft spot for animals and often rescued strays or nursed the injured back to health. Larry’s life was one of quiet generosity, steady devotion, and genuine warmth, and he leaves behind a legacy as enduring as the landscapes he shaped.
He is survived by his wife: Charlene Forbes of Stonington; children: Adriann Gaither of Blue Mound and David Forbes of Harristown; grandchildren: Camille Gaither, Dawnyelle Forbes, and Amy Larkin; sister-in-law: Cynthia McChristy of Stonington; and his beloved faithful companion: Rosie. He was preceded in death by his parents and 2 brothers.
A funeral service for Larry will take place at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, at McClure Funeral Home with Pastor Brennen Hurley and Pastor Sheryl VanDyke officiating. The visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. and burial will take place at Old Stonington Cemetery. Memorials can be made to the Stonington United Methodist Church or Christian County Animal Control. McClure Funeral Home and Cremation Services is handling arrangements.
