Robert Smith, 84, of Taylorville, IL, passed away on Tuesday, March 31, 2026, at Taylorville Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He was born on August 8, 1941, in Girard, IL, to the late Leonard and Wanda Smith. On October 1, 1960, he married Florence “Dolly” Kollmann in Stonington, and they spent many loving years together before his passing.

Robert worked as a machinist for Caterpillar for many years. In his spare time, he enjoyed woodworking and completed many beautiful projects over the years. Most of all, Robert loved his family and cherished the time spent with them.

He is survived by his wife: Dolly Smith of Taylorville, IL; sons: Chris (Traci) Smith of Sullivan, IL; John Smith of Taylorville, IL; daughter: Cathy (Jeff) May of Stonington, IL; grandchildren: Heather and Trevor Smith; Kenny Ogle; Madison Smith; and Tatum Smith; great-grandchildren: Adaline Smith; Kaleigh Buerk; Remington Buerk; Dutton Merker; siblings: Loretta “Deb” Manley; Donna Miller; Jane Raegen; and Gerry Grigsby.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers: Jimmy Smith; Leonard Smith; and Jerry Smith; as well as his sister: Janice Buerk.

Per Robert’s wishes, cremation rites have been accorded, and a visitation will be held on Thursday, April 9, 2026, from 2:00-4:00 p.m. at Sutton Memorial Home in Taylorville. A Celebration of Life will be held after the visitation at the Evangelical Free Church in Taylorville. Inurnment will be held at a later date.
