Rita Mae Sloan

Rita Mae Sloan, 97, of Morrisonville, IL, passed away on Friday, April 17, 2026, at Copper Creek Cottages in Litchfield, IL. She was born on August 23, 1928, in Morrisonville, the seventh of the eleven children born to the late George Joseph and Mary (Nolan) Sloan.

Rita graduated from Morrisonville High School with the Class of 1946, and continued her education, receiving a Bachelor’s from Webster College (now Webster University) in St. Louis in 1950, and a Master’s in Social Work from St. Louis University in 1952. She was employed by the Illinois Department of Children’s and Family Services as a social worker for many years and later taught children at St. Maurice School. Following her retirement, she supported her mother in running the family business, Sloan Furniture. She lived in Morrisonville for most of her life and was a tireless and cheerful member of the community. In recognition of her dedication to civic duties and care for her community, she served as the Grand Marshall of the Morrisonville Homecoming Parade in 1999.

Rita led a life of service to others and was forever guided by her strong Catholic faith. She was a lifelong and active parishioner of St. Maurice and served the church in countless ways; in 2002, she was honored by the Springfield Diocese as a Woman of Distinction for her outstanding service to God and neighbor. She was devoted to her large family and adored by dozens of nieces and nephews and many generations of Sloans. Rita enjoyed working with people all her life and will be remembered for the warmth and kindness she extended to everyone.

Rita is survived by her brother Jim and two sisters, Martha Beeler and Rose Ann Sloan, and a sister-in-law, Bernardine (wife of brother Jack). She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Mary Sloan, and her siblings Nolan, Georgia, Rosemary, Mary Cecilia Pino (Joe), Bernadine O’Neill (Leo), Bill (Sandy), and Jack; as well as her sister-in-law Janice Franklin Sloan and brother-in-law, Carl Beeler.

A visitation will be held on Thursday, April 23, 2026, from 12 to 4 pm at the KC Hall in Morrisonville. A second visitation will take place on Friday, April 24, 2026, from 5:30 to 8:30 pm. A funeral mass will be held on Saturday, April 25 at 10 AM at St. Maurice Catholic Church in Morrisonville, officiated by Father Florent Kanga. Rita will be laid to rest at St. Maurice Catholic Cemetery following the service. All gathering in Rita’s memory on Saturday are welcome to attend a luncheon in her memory at the KC Hall immediately after the burial.
