Philip C. Moss

Philip C. Moss, 77, of Washington, passed away on Wednesday, May 20, 2026 at his home.

Phil was born July 5, 1948 in Taylorville, IL to William C. and Sophronia I. Moss. He married Linda Evans on August 30, 1969 in Owaneco, IL.

Surviving is his wife, Linda; their sons, Shawn and Mark Moss both of Washington; his brother, Gary C. (Judi) Moss of Las Vegas, NV; and nieces and nephews, Valerie Whitlow, Jennifer Schey, Kristin Thorell, and Gary Moss.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister and brother-in-law, Suzanne and Garry Whitlow.

Phil graduated from Taylorville High School with the Class of 1966 and earned his Bachelor’s degree from Illinois State University. He went on to teach chemistry at Washington Community High School for over 30 years. He coached football nearly all his tenure at WCHS and was an original member of the 12th Man Organization. Phil had the honor of being inducted into the Illinois High School Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame as well as the Taylorville High School Hall of Fame as part of the 1966 basketball team and the WCHS Hall of Fame. He was an avid St Louis Cardinals fan but loved sports of any kind. He was a longtime and active member of Sunset Hills Golf Club, playing in the Best Ball Golf Outing for 50 years, and was proud to have been given the club’s Al Weaver Integrity Award. Phil made a difference in the lives of many people over the years, though he would be quick to deny it. He leaves a legacy of encouragement, character, and community with his family and friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Washington 12th Man Organization for a scholarship in Phil’s name or OSF St. Francis Foundation-Neo-Natal Intensive Care Unit.

Phil's family will receive guests from 4-7:00pm Wednesday, May 27, 2026 at Deiters Funeral Home and Crematory in Washington. A funeral ceremony will be held at 11:00am Thursday, May 28, 2026 at the funeral home. Immediately following the ceremony, interment will be at Glendale Cemetery in Washington.
