Penelope Virginia “Penny” Moomey, 84 of Owaneco, passed away on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, at Pana Health and Rehab Center. She was born on January 11, 1942, in Eldorado, the daughter of Carl Keith and Margie Myrtle (Toberman) Satterlee. She married Larry Russell Moomey on November 7, 1958, in Owaneco and he preceded her in death on October 1, 2024. Penny graduated from Taylorville High School in 1961. Penny was a devoted member of the Owaneco community and a lifetime member of Owaneco United Methodist Church, where she faithfully served as a Sunday School teacher, Bible School director, treasurer, and chairman of the board. She was deeply involved with local youth as a longtime 4-H leader for the Owaneco Indians and Maidens and also served as a Cub Scout leader. Penny worked at the Barra Law Office and was proud to be the first meter reader in Owaneco when the town first received water service, continuing in that role for 20 years. She also spent more than two decades working at Jensen Home Furnishings. Penny never met a stranger, cherished her many friendships, and will be remembered for her kindness, dedication, and service to others.
She is survived by her children: Bradley Moomey (Robin) of Owaneco, Brent Moomey (Linda) of Owaneco, Bonita Hadley (Wayne) of Taylorville, and Bart Moomey of Owaneco; grandchildren: Michael Stephens, Shawn Moomey, Penelope Jane Gomez, Eryn McGough (Dylan), Ann Moomey (Pete Broostrom), Ashley Moomey, Caleb Hadley, Levi Hadley (Karlie), and Tyler Moomey (Emily); several great grandchildren; sister: Lana; brother-in-law: Gary Campbell, and her brother-in-law and sister-in-law: Jerry and Rita Moomey; several nieces and nephews; and dear friend: Janet Engeling. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.
A funeral service for Penny will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, at McClure Funeral Home in Taylorville with Rev. Jessica Baldyga officiating. The visitation will take place one hour prior to the service and burial will be in the Owaneco Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Owaneco United Methodist Church. McClure Funeral Home and Cremation Services in Taylorville is assisting the family with arrangements.
