Thomas Edward Doyle Jr.

Thomas Edward Doyle Jr., 75 of Taylorville, passed away on Saturday, June 6, 2026, at Taylorville Care Center.  He was born on August 9, 1950, in Taylorville, the son of Thomas Edward and Dorothy Adrienne (Gulso) Doyle Sr.  He married Gail MacLaren on October 9, 1981, in Taylorville and she preceded him in death on November 5, 2020.  Tom graduated from the University of Illinois and earned his law degree from John Marshall Law School in Chicago.  He operated his own law practice in Taylorville for over 50 years.  Tom was a lifelong student of history with a particular passion for the Civil War. An avid reader and Civil War aficionado, he generously shared his knowledge through his volunteer work at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum. He enjoyed following horse racing, cheering on University of Illinois athletics, and rooting for his beloved Chicago Cubs. Tom was also an active member of a Civil War Roundtable, where he enjoyed learning, discussing history, and building lasting friendships with fellow enthusiasts. His curiosity, dedication, and love of history enriched the lives of all who knew him.

He is survived by his step-sons: Sean Derrick (Carla) of Edwardsville and Steven Derrick (Marcy) of Russellville, Alabama; grandchildren: Kiah Derrick, Tiana Derrick, and Lakin Derrick; siblings: Mary Dettro of Stonington, Marge Doyle of Chatham, Nancy Doyle of Stonington, and Ann Doyle (Tod Anderson) of Normal; niece and nephews: Emily Tesar of Billings, MT, Doyle Dettro (Nnenna) of Chatham, and Tom Anderson of Normal; and great nieces and nephews: Jack Dettro, Eva Dettro, Max Dettro, and Gabby Tesar.  He was preceded in death by his parents and wife. 

Tom will be cremated and a private inurnment will take place at a later date at Old Stonington Cemetery.  Memorials may be made to the Stonington Township Library, PO Box 144, Stonington, IL 62567.  The family wishes to extend their sincere appreciation to the staff of Taylorville Care Center for the exceptional care they provided Tom.  Sutton Memorial Home in Taylorville is assisting the family with arrangements.
