Albert “George” Morris, 80 of Taylorville, formerly of Nashville, Illinois, passed away on Monday, June 8, 2026, in his home. He was born on April 3, 1946, in Litchfield, the son of Albert H. and Ann (Zupsich) Morris. He married Deborah Lynne Hoecker in February of 1971, and she preceded him in death. George graduated from Taylorville High School in 1965 where he enjoyed playing baseball and was later inducted into the Taylorville High School Sports Hall of Fame. He went on to attend the University of Rolla where he played football and later earned his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering. George had a long career in coal mining, having worked for Peabody Mine #10 and later for the West Virginia Federal 2 Mine until 1993. He then went on to work for the Indiana Department of Natural Resources where he retired in 2012 and moved back to Taylorville. He enjoyed fishing and hunting, traveling to visit his family, and trying his luck at the slot machines.
He is survived by children: Dr. Stanley Morris (Cheri) of Summersville, West Virginia, Lisa Morris Stiltner of St. Albans, West Virginia, Robert “Bob” Morris (Jessica) of Morgantown, Indiana, Matt Morris (Leah) of Gold Beach, Oregon, and Chrissy Morris of Terre Haute, Indiana; grandchildren: Zoe Katherine Adkins, Penelope Morris Adkins, Katherine Morris, Mia Morris, Luke Morris, Maddox Morris, and Jada Morris; siblings: Stanley Morris (Lavonne) of Coulterville, Illinois and Patty Andrews of Conroe, Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; and sister: Eloise Wachala.
George will be cremated and a memorial mass will take place at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, June 15, 2026, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Taylorville with Fr. John Burnette officiating. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. at the Holy Cross Cemetery in Gillespie. A visitation will take place on Sunday, from 3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. at McClure Funeral Home in Taylorville followed by a prayer service at 5:00 p.m. McClure Funeral Home and Cremation Services in Taylorville is assisting the family with arrangements.
