Some people are remembered for what they accomplished. Ray Shaw will be remembered for the way he loved, the way he showed up, and the way he made people feel.
Whether he was a husband, brother, dad, grandpa, Scout leader, coach, business partner, or friend, Ray believed the best way to love people was simply to be there. He had a remarkable gift for making others feel seen, valued, and capable of more than they believed possible.
Raymond “Ray” Thomas Shaw, of Springfield, Illinois, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, on Friday, July 10, 2026, at the age of 72.
Ray was born on October 12, 1953, in Newport News, Virginia, to Raymond and Doris (McFadden) Shaw. He was raised in Charlotte, North Carolina, where he graduated from South Mecklenburg High School in 1972 and helped lead the school's soccer team to the 1971 North Carolina State Championship. He graduated from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte in the spring of 1976.
Following graduation, Ray moved to the St. Louis area to be closer to family, where he met the love of his life, Lynne Rock. They married and shared more than 47 wonderful years together, raising their six children in the Midwest and Royal Palm Beach, Florida, before making Springfield, Illinois, their home for the past 26 years.
Ray is survived by his devoted wife, Lynne; his children, Rebecka (Aaron) Baecker of Naperville, Illinois; Laura (Daniel) Hamilton of Rochester, Illinois; Robert (Demi) Shaw of Katy, Texas; Caroline (Collin) Marcotte of Springfield, Illinois; Emily Shaw of Springfield, Illinois; and Matthew Shaw of Carbondale, Illinois. He was preceded in death by his infant son, Patrick Raymond Shaw.
Ray loved every opportunity to spend time with his grandchildren and watch them grow. He was the proud grandfather of Anderson and Alina Baecker; Bingham and Barrett Hamilton; Owen, Finley, Asher, and Benjamin Shaw; and Lewis Marcotte. Whether they were gathered in his office, laughing together, or simply enjoying time as a family, Grandpa had a way of making every visit feel special. If they were lucky, it ended with a Hershey's Kiss, a stick of Wrigley's Juicy Fruit gum, or a crisp dollar bill tucked into a pocket. They will forever remember his playful smile, his invitation to "smell my piggies," and the way he jokingly insisted they call him "King"—a title they happily embraced because making Grandpa laugh was one of their favorite things.
Ray is also survived by his brothers, David (Mary) Shaw and Michael (Terri) Shaw of Ellisville, Missouri; Douglas (Lynn) Shaw of Ballwin, Missouri; his sister, Barbara (Michael) Sicking of Dardenne Prairie, Missouri; and many beloved nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Doris Shaw. He cherished the lifelong bond he shared with his siblings and extended family.
At just 16 years old, Ray earned the rank of Eagle Scout, an accomplishment that reflected the integrity, perseverance, and servant's heart that defined his life. He went on to spend decades mentoring young people through Scouting, helping more than 50 earn the rank of Eagle Scout. He never sought recognition. If something needed to be built, organized, or improved, Ray quietly rolled up his sleeves and got to work.
Whatever mattered to his family became important to him. When his children fell in love with soccer, Ray became their coach and club commissioner, leading numerous teams to Florida State Cup championships while helping unite several Palm Beach County soccer clubs into one thriving organization. Years later, when his youngest children discovered music and theater, he served as president of the Pleasant Plains Fine Arts organization, helping secure funding for a new cafetorium and expanding opportunities for students throughout the district. Whether it was sports, music, theater, Scouting, or any new pursuit, Ray found ways to encourage, support, and create opportunities for his children, and others within his community, to thrive.
Professionally, Ray spent nearly five decades as a respected manufacturers' representative in the electrical industry. He built a career on integrity, hard work, and lasting relationships. Customers became lifelong friends, manufacturers became trusted partners, and colleagues became family. He genuinely loved what he did because he enjoyed the people he served.
Ray loved an adventure and rarely passed up an opportunity to make memories with the people he loved. Whether it was a family vacation, a weekend getaway, cheering on his beloved St. Louis Cardinals as a longtime season ticket holder, or becoming the very first passenger aboard the airplane during his teenage son's pilot training, he embraced life with curiosity, confidence, and an unwavering willingness to say "yes."
Above all else, Ray's greatest accomplishment was his family. He taught those around him that leadership begins with service, success means little without integrity, and the greatest gift you can give another person is your presence. He didn't simply tell people they mattered. He showed them every single day.
His legacy lives on in the children he raised, the grandchildren who adored him, the Scouts he mentored, the athletes he coached, the friendships he cultivated, and the countless lives made better simply because Ray Shaw was part of their story.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has surrounded them with love, prayers, and support during this difficult time.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, August 8, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. CST at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Springfield, Illinois. A private Celebration of Life will follow.
In lieu of flowers or meals, the family invites you to honor Ray by doing what he did so well: show up for someone. Attend the game. Make the phone call. Visit a friend. Lend a hand. Encourage a young person. Let someone know they matter.
If you would like to make a charitable gift in Ray's memory, donations may be made to Make-A-Wish Illinois or Scouting America—two organizations that reflect his lifelong commitment to serving others and investing in the next generation.
