Gloria Jean Justus

Gloria Jean Justus, 71 of Stonington, IL passed away on Tuesday, December 21, 2021 at 7:04 p.m. at Pana Community Hospital in Pana, IL. She was born on June 19, 1950 in Taylorville, IL the daughter of Chester and Lucille (Liedel) Dilbeck.  She married Bobby Justus on July 9, 1971 in Taylorville, IL. Gloria was a charter member of the Taylorville Christian Church, she then became a member of the Tower Hill Free Methodist Church and she attended the Mt. Pleaseant Church of God in Assumption, IL as of late. She was a beauty operator and later became a CNA and she liked to read when she could and she loved putting puzzles together and attending Southern Gospel concerts.


She is survived by her Son: Christopher Justus of FL, Sister: Mary Dilbeck of Pana, IL; Cousin: Shirley Truax of Assumption, IL; several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, and parents.


Visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 5, 2021 from 10:00-11:00 a.m. at Mt. Pleasant Church of God in Assumption, IL. Memorial service will be held immediately following the visitation starting at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor David Beerbower officiating. Inurnment will be held at a later date at Camp Butler National Cemetery in Taylorville, IL.

Russell Keith Wantland

Russell Keith Wantland, 84 of Taylorville passed away on Monday, December 27, 2021 at 8:55 p.m. at Taylorville Memorial Hospital in Taylorville, IL. He was born on January 10, 1937 in Lane, IL the son of Russell and Helen (North) Wantland. He married Dixie Johnson on July 26, 1957 in Lane, IL. Keith worked as a contractor and developed Timber Lake Estates in Taylorville. Keith was a member of Way of Life Church in Taylorville. He was a talented wood worker, he loved his home and most of all, his family.


He is survived by his Wife: Dixie Wantland of Taylorville, IL; Daughter: Cindy Nisinger of Taylorville, IL; Grandchildren: Keith and Anna Tippett of North Carolina; Step-Granddaughter: Victoria Nisinger of Cleveland, NC; Sisters: Sharon Pearl of Farmers City, IL; Marilyn (Steve) Florie of Goodfield, IL; Brother: David (Ruthie) Wantland; several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Son-in-Law: Brian Nisinger, Brother: Elwin Wantland and Sister: June Ellen.


Visitation will be held on Thursday, December 30, 2021 from 4:00-7:00 p.m. at Sutton Memorial Home in Taylorville. Funeral service will be held on Friday, December 31, 2021 starting at 1:00 p.m. at Sutton Memorial Home in Taylorville with Pastor Stan Pratt officiating. Inurnment will be held at a later date.

Lawrence "Larry" Michael Orator

Lawrence “Larry” Michael Orator, 71 of Palmer passed away on Monday, December 27, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. at OSF Sacred Heart Health Care Center in Danville, IL. He was born on December 22, 1950 in Taylorville, IL the son of Walter Stanley and Louise Ellen (Lurtz) Orator. Larry worked at GP for 22 years and then he became a registered nurse and retired in 2012. He was a Veteran of the United States Army during Vietnam serving as a Medic. He enjoyed friends and he enjoyed his yearly trip to Montauk fishing with his buddies. He loved to watch sports and play Uker. Most of all he enjoyed his extended family and children. Larry was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and VFW Post #4495 in Taylorville.


He is survived by his Companion of 25 years Marcia Dunaway of Palmer, IL; Sisters: Christine (Karl) Reed of Springfield, IL, Kathy Owens of Ocala, FL; Brothers: Steve (Lori) Orator of Normal, IL; Dan Orator of Ocala, FL; Aunt: Mary Lurtz of Missouri; several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and Sister: Sue Orator.


Visitation will be held on Sunday, January 2, 2022 from 4:00-6:00 p.m. at Sutton Memorial Home in Taylorville. Funeral service will be held on Monday, January 3, 2022 starting at 10:00 a.m. at Sutton Memorial Home in Taylorville with Monsignor David Lantz officiating. Burial will be in Camp Butler National Cemetery in Springfield, IL.

Peggy Delores (Billerman) Patton

Peggy Delores (Billerman) Patton, 88 of Taylorville, IL passed away on Wednesday, December 21, 2021 at 10:17 p.m. at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield, IL. She was born on November 1, 1933 in Roe, Arkansas the daughter of Herman and Ella Mae (White) Billerman.  She married Robert W. Patton on September 3, 1955 in Decatur, IL and he preceded her in death on March 10, 2015. Peggy graduated from Macon High School with the Class of 1951 and her hobbies included reading, sewing, and canning. She was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Taylorville and the American Legion Auxiliary Post #73. Peggy was a beautician for 25 years and later worked at the Walmart Super Center in Taylorville.


She is survived by her Son; Robert C. Patton of Taylorville, several grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Son: Roger G. Patton and two sisters.


Graveside service will be held on Thursday, December 30, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. at Anderson Cemetery in Palmer, IL with Pastor Rodney Blomquist officiating.

Mary Elizabeth (Faust) Smith

Mary Elizabeth (Faust) Smith, 83, of Assumption, IL, passed away on Saturday, December 25, 2021 at home to be reunited with her husband and son.   

 

Mary was born on November 29, 1938, in Chicago, one of 12 children born to Kenneth and Marion (Rosenquist) Faust.  She married the love of her life, Howard Smith, on June 1, 1957, and they were blessed with 45 years of marriage before his passing on November 25, 2002 and five children:  Charles, Kenneth, Richard, Debra and Douglas.  Mary adored her family and enjoyed spending time with them.  She loved cardinals, anything that had a cardinal on it and playing bingo.  Her favorite time of the year was Christmas as she loved decorating her house and taking rides to look at all the lights.  Mary was a loving mother, grandma, GG, sister, aunt and friend to many and will be dearly missed by all that knew her.  

 

She leaves behind her children:  Charles (Crystal) Smith of Robertsdale, AL, Kenneth (Kandy) Smith of Assumption, Richard Smith of Assumption and Debra (Michael) Barnes of Cowden; 13 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters:  Pat (Harry) Boudreau of Florida, Bunny (Jack) Gillmore of West Plains, MO, Judy (Harold) Spitzer of Urbana, MO, Lynne (Jerry) Dethrow of St. Anne, Lin Taetz of Arizona, Ellen (Bobby) Pearce of Venice, FL, Nick Faust of New City, NY, Chip (Donna) Faust of New Jersey; half-brother, James (Camille) Faust of Chicago; half-sister, Barbara of Bloomington, WI and sister-in-law, Barbara Faust of Joliet.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents, Kenneth and Marion Faust; husband, Howard Smith; son, Douglas Smith who passed in May 1979; sister, Barbara (Pedro) Palmer; brothers:  Chuck (Mary) Faust, Kenneth Faust and infant brother, Nicklas; half-brothers:  Raymond Faust and Donald Faust.

 

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 30, 2021, in Lockart-Green Funeral Home in Shelbyville.  Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.  Burial will take place in Pleasant View Cemetery in Assumption.  Memorials may be made in Mary’s name to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and mailed to 302 W. Main Street, Shelbyville, IL 62565.  Lockart-Green Funeral Home in Shelbyville is assisting the family.

Patricia Smith, 59 of Pawnee, IL formerly of Spring Hill, FL passed away on Sunday, December 19, 2021 at her home in Rural Pawnee, IL. Patricia will be cremated and no services will be held.

Gary Ray Conner

Gary Ray Conner, 70 of Pawnee, IL passed away on Sunday, December 19, 2021 at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield, IL. He was born on September 24, 1951, the son of Walter and Norma Conner. After graduating high school, Gary attended and graduated from St. Norbert College in Wisconsin.  He then moved to Spring Hill, Florida where he worked for Builders Aluminum Products. After that, he was the owner/operator of a carpet cleaning business. Gary moved back to Pawnee, IL in 2016. He enjoyed living on the family farm. Gary was a big Chicago Cubs and Chicago Bears fan. 


He is survived by his sister: Cheryl O’Donnell of Taylorville. He was preceded in death by his parents: Walter and Norma E. (O’Hara) Solomon-Conner.


Visitation will be held on Thursday, December 30, 2021 from 12:00-1:00 p.m. at Sutton Memorial Home in Taylorville, IL. Funeral Service will be immediately following the visitation starting at 1:00 p.m. at Sutton Memorial Home in Taylorville, IL with Father Tony Swamey Officiating. Burial will be in St. Maurice Cemetery in Morrisonville, IL.

Robert H. McQueen

Robert Huston McQueen, 69, of Morrisonville, passed away at 4:55 a.m. on Sunday, December 26, 2021 at Springfield Memorial Hospital.


Robert was born July 6, 1952 in South Bend, IN, the son of the late Theodore and Helen (McNay) McQueen.  While in 4th grade, the family moved to Quincy, eventually settling on a farm in Payson.

 

Robert worked the farm and for other farmers throughout high school to help support his mother and siblings.  He graduated from Payson-Seymour High School with the Class of 1970, and went to work for George Keller and Sons, assisting with veterinary work.  On October 4, 1974, Robert married Sandra Hibbard, the love of his life, at the Calvary Baptist Church in Quincy.  In the same year, Robert accepted a position with Farm & Home in Quincy, and it turned out to be his lifelong career.  

 

After transferring to the Springfield store in 1976, he worked his way through the ranks to retire as the District Manager and Buyer for Big R in Springfield, Taylorville, and Lincoln.


Robert was strong, faithful, caring, and selfless, and these traits were especially evident to his church family at the First Baptist Church of Morrisonville.  He was active as a Deacon, and especially active in the church mission trips, and with the youth.  He loved the church kids as his own.  Robert was always generous with his time and talents. He was an avid sports fan and competitor, competing in several different racquetball, basketball, slow-pitch, and fast-pitch softball leagues over the years.  Nothing in life meant more to him than his family.  He loved his children and grandchildren dearly.


Robert is survived by his wife, Sandra McQueen of Morrisonville; children, Robert Corey (Katie) McQueen of Virden, Erin (Jeffrey) Willis of Middletown, and Bethany (Brittney) Gallivan of Chatham; grandchildren, Cade, Carter, Kayli, Crosby, and Adalynn; twin brother, Ronald McQueen of Seattle, WA; brother, LeRoy (Pat) McQueen of Gulf Port, MS; and sister, Diane (Willard) Franks of Millbrook, AL; and several nieces and nephews.


Visitation: The family will receive friends from 5:00-8:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 30, 2021 at the First Baptist Church, 209 School Street, Morrisonville, IL 62546. 


Funeral Ceremony: 11:00 a.m. on Friday, December 31, 2021 at the First Baptist Church with Rev. Chad Foster officiating.


Interment will follow the ceremony at Morrisonville Cemetery.

David W. Ashby

David W. Ashby, 57 of Taylorville passed away on Friday, December 24, 2021 at 4:22 p.m. at Taylorville Memorial Hospital in Taylorville, IL. He was born on June 14, 1964 in Taylorville, IL the son of Melvin Wayne and Faye (Hoy) Ashby Jr. He married Stephanie Fisher on September 10, 2005 in Stonington, IL. David was an avid St. Louis Blues, St. Louis Cardinals and Cincinnati Bengals Fan. He loved to sing karaoke at Y-Zoes and the Thunderbird, ride his motorcycle, spending time with his grandkids and he loved his dogs.  

 
He is survived by his Wife: Stephanie Ashby of Taylorville, IL; Daughters: Megan (David) Siegrist of Taylorville, IL, Madison Ashby of Taylorville, IL; step-Son: Jeff Dugan of Taylorville, IL; Grandchildren: Finnley and Annie Siegrist of Taylorville, IL; Mother: Faye Halford of Taylorville, IL; Brothers: Tim Ashby of Springfield, IL; Ed Gillen of Taylorville, IL; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his grandparents and his father.  


Visitation will be held on Tuesday, December 28, 2021 from 4:00-6:00 p.m. at Sutton Memorial Home in Taylorville. Funeral service will be held immediately following the visitation starting at 6:00 p.m. at Sutton Memorial Home in Taylorville with Pastor Gerald McPhillips officiating. Inurnment will be held at a later date. The family requests that casual attire be worn to the services.

LaDonna J. Hill

Ms. LaDonna J. Hill, 55, of Kincaid, IL passed from this life at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday, December 21, 2021 at Heritage Health Care in Pana, IL.

 

She was born in Springfield, IL December 10, 1966 the daughter of Jesse and Patricia Thorne.  

 

LaDonna liked to have a good time.  She especially enjoyed cookouts and spending time with her family and friends.

 

Surviving are her mother Pat Credi of Kincaid, IL father Jesse Thorne of Springfield, IL 3 sons Josh Hill, Matt Jones & Shane Jones, 9 grandchildren Drea, Day-Lynn, Carter, Preston, Lexie, Carly, Adalin, Dylan, & Mylie, a brother Jason Thorne of Kincaid, IL a step brother Tommy Credi of Pawnee, IL 2 step sisters Lisa Rodden of Bulpitt, IL and Gloria Smith of FL along with many friends.

 

She was preceded in death by her step-father William “Bill” Credi and a brother Mark Thorne.

 

Cremation rites have been accorded and a memorial service will be announced in the spring.  Masterson Funeral Home is assisting her family with arrangements.   

Pietro Antonio "Pete" Becchelli

Pietro Antonio “Pete” Becchelli, 72, of Kincaid IL, passed away Tuesday, December 21, 2021 at home.  He was born in Taylorville, IL on June 6, 1949 the son of Armando and Anna (Venturelli) Becchelli.  He graduated from South Fork High school in Kincaid as class president.

 

He married Dona Males on April 10, 1982 at the Kincaid United Methodist Church.  Pete was a member and current treasurer of the United Mine Workers Local #9918.  He was a Sergeant of the United States Air Force and a Vietnam veteran.  He was member of American Legion Post 905 in Kincaid, holding position of Jr. Vice Commander. Owner/operator of Pete’s excavating.  He retired from the coal mine.

 

Surviving are his wife Dona, Kincaid, IL, sister-in-law Karen VanBlaircum of Taylorville, IL two step-sons Gary J. Gesell of Taylorville, IL, and Mark Gesell Morrisonville, IL, two sisters JoAnn Becchelli (Thomas) Lewis of Hot Springs AR, and Rose Mary Becchelli Theison of Danvers, IL, along with nieces and nephews to include Gina Heckinger (Brad)of Normal, IL and two nephews Domenic Theison (Shawna), and Tony Nudo and family including Marianne Nudo who preceded him in death, a Great niece Jayden of Mackinaw, IL. Step Grandson Tylor Gesell and step Granddaughter Kloey Locke.  Numerous loved cousin’s in the US and Italy

 

Pete had many, many great friends and was very well respected. And will be greatly missed by all
Funeral services will be held at 12:00 pm Monday, December 27, 2021 at Masterson Funeral Home in Kincaid.  Reverend Chad Foster officiating.  Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Pawnee, IL.  Visitation for Mr. Becchelli will be held from 10:00 am to noon on Monday.

 

In Lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to St. Jude’s Childrens Hospital in memory of Pete Becchelli.

 

Donald Sisk Jr.

Donald Sisk Jr., 50 of Nokomis passed away on Thursday, December 16, 2021 at 12:11 p.m. at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield, IL. He was born on November 4, 1971 in Hillsboro, IL the son of Donald and Shirley (Northcraft) Sisk. He married Julie Hardas on September 2, 1994 in Taylorville, IL. Don worked as an area Manager for Austin Industrial. He loved to travel, tinker in the garage and most of all he loved his family. 


He is survived by his wife: Julie Sisk of Nokomis, IL; sons: Dalton Sisk of Nokomis, IL; Kody (Adrianna) Sisk of Taylorville, IL; daughter: Brandi (Justin) Stines of Irving, IL; eleven grandchildren; one brother; five sisters and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister in infancy.  


Visitation will be held on Tuesday, December 21, 2021 from 4:00-7:00 p.m. at Sutton Funeral Home in Nokomis. Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, December 22, 2021 starting at 10:00 a.m. at Sutton Funeral Home in Nokomis with Pastor Ryan Follis officiating. Burial will be held in Rosemond Grove Cemetery in Rosamond, IL. The family requests that everyone wear casual attire.

Mary Louise Himstedt

Mary Louise Himstedt, 95, of Morrisonville, passed away at 10:51 p.m. on Wednesday, December 15, 2021 at Taylorville Care Center.

 

Mary was born June 22, 1926 in Morrisonville, the daughter of Albert and Juanita (Malsbury) Dunkirk.  She married Leonard O. Himstedt on December 19, 1948 at the Shiloh Methodist Church in rural Morrisonville. Together, they shared 45 years of marriage. He preceded her in death on June 13, 1994.


 
She was also preceded in death by her parents; siblings, Albert (Pauline) Dunkirk Jr. and Kenneth (Dottie) Dunkirk; and daughters-in-law, Barbara Stone and Vickie Stone.

 


Mary is survived by her children, Sharon (husband, Bruce) Meachum of Seattle, WA; Edward Stone of St. Peters, MO, Glenn (wife, Grace Tryon) Himstedt of Mechanicsville, VA, Dale (wife, Sandy White) Himstedt of Morrisonville, IL, and Kris (wife, Melissa DeWerff) Himstedt of Fairland, IN; 9 grandchildren, Lynette, Grant, Jodi, Chad, Jamie, Laura, Jeff, Devan and Garrett; and 12 great- grandchildren.

 

    
Mary was a graduate of Morrisonville High School.  She was a dedicated homemaker, and assisted Leonard on the family farm. She was a talented pianist, cook, seamstress and pieced beautiful quilts. Tending to her beautiful flower gardens was a favorite pastime, along with vegetable gardening, then canning the rewards of her labor. With all of the duties of the farm, she still managed to put her family first in every way. She truly cherished her time with all of them. They never had to question her love for them, as she always made it known when they were together. 

 

Mary’s faith never took a backseat to her household and family duties. She was a longtime member of the United Methodist Church in Morrisonville and more recently, a member of the First United Methodist Church of Taylorville. 

 

Visitation: The family will receive friends from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Monday, December 20, 2021 at Perfetti-Assalley Funeral Home, 304 Carlin St, Morrisonville, IL 62546.

 

Funeral Service: A funeral service for Mary will be held on Tuesday, December 21, 2021 at 10:00 A.M. at the First United Methodist Church, 200 S. Walnut Street, Taylorville, IL 62568, with Pastor Becky Lembke officiating.

 

Interment alongside her husband will follow at the Morrisonville Cemetery.

Travis D. Stephens, 48, of Taylorville, passed away on Wednesday, December 15, 2021 at his residence.  A private graveside ceremony will be held at Oak Hill Cemetery in Taylorville.

Charles A. Angelo

Charles A. Angelo, 83, of Morrisonville, passed away at 3:16 a.m. on Wednesday, December 15, 2021 at his residence.

 

Charlie was born October 12, 1938 in Carlinville, the son of Gilbert and Martha (Sutton) Angelo.  He married Betty M. Mitchell on April 12, 1964 at the Morrisonville United Methodist Church, and they have enjoyed over 57 years of marriage.

 

Charlie graduated from Girard High School with the Class of 1956, and went on to proudly serve our country in the United States Air Force.  He turned his honorable service to the Air Force into a career with the United State Air National Guard, where he retired as a Chief Master Sergeant and 42 years of service.  In his retirement, Charlie and Betty spent a lot of time painting commercially for many residents, businesses, and churches in Morrisonville.  He was an avid gardener, talented carpenter, and he loved to bowl and enjoy a few beers.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents; nephew, Bryan Mitchell; step-sister, Mary Lou Remling; and step-brother, Robert Utt.

 

Charlie is survived by his wife, Betty M. Angelo of Morrisonville; son, Chad Angelo of Colorado Springs, CO; daughter, Kelli Showalter of Rochester; grandson, Daniel Showalter of Rochester; sister, Connie (husband, Tom) O’Neill of Florida; and brother, John (wife, Bobbie) Angelo of Texas.

 

Visitation: The family will receive friends from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 19, 2021 at Perfetti-Assalley Funeral Home, 304 Carlin Street, Morrisonville, IL 62546.

 

Funeral Ceremony: 10:30 a.m. on Monday, December 20, 2021 at Perfetti-Assalley Funeral Home in Morrisonville with Rev. LuAnne Stewart officiating.

(Beyers) Fikan.  He married Stella Sanders on November 16, 1972 in Decatur.  Bill proudly served his county in the U.S. Army for 4 years.  Following his time in the service he began working at Wagner Castings in Decatur where he retired after 40 years of employment.  He also spent many years farming, a passion that continued even after he couldn’t do the work himself.  He enjoyed spending time outdoors fishing, camping, and traveling.  He recently returned from a bucket-list-trip to the Grand Canyon.  Most of all he loved spending time with his large family.

 
He is survived by his wife: Stella Fikan of Tower Hill; children: Elizabeth Bonn of Pana, David (Jenney) Fikan of Oakley, Jonathan (Jennifer) Fikan of Tower Hill, Thomas (Stacy) Fikan of Pana, Sarah Lindsay (Curtis Jeffrey) of Pana, and Rachel (Nick) Waterman of Tower Hill; 17 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren, with another on the way; and sister: Karen Centowski of Aurora.  He was preceded in death by his parents; sister: Kathleen Fikan; and nephew: Michael Centowski.

Mrs. Rose Marie Tippitt

Mrs. Rose Marie Tippitt, 96, of Kincaid, IL passed from this life at 5:20 P.M. Sunday, December 12, 2021 at Taylorville Memorial Hospital.


She was born in Kincaid, IL on December 4, 1925 the daughter of Enrico and Angelina (Fiaoni) Staffaroni.  Rose married Carl C. Tippitt on August 23, 1945 in Taylorville, IL.  Rose and Carl renewed their vows in June of 1973 at St. Rita Catholic Church, Kincaid.  Mr. Tippitt preceded her in death May 17, 2017.


Rose was a member of St. Rita Catholic Church, Kincaid.  She enjoyed and spent many years working in the kitchen at the Knight's of Columbus Hall in Kincaid, playing bingo, watching her grandchildren play sports, and spending time with her family.  Mrs. Tippitt was a loving housewife and highly devoted to her family and friends.   

  
Surviving are: her son Robert “Bob” and wife Janet Tippitt and daughter Beverly and husband Dale Merano all of Kincaid, IL 5 grandchildren Cherie Pope of Springfield, IL Kelly (Josh) Prince of Tovey, IL Lissa (Tommy) Watson, Stephanie (Joe) Leonard and Melanie Merano all of Kincaid, IL 9 great-grandchildren Derek (Sami) Moss, Devinn Moss, Haley & Hayden Prince, Kennady & Adalyn Watson, William & Luca Leonard and Maxx Pope 3 great-great-grandchildren Ryder Conaway, Greyson Moss and Logan Vandenbergh along with many friends.


She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.


Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 A.M. Friday, December 17, 2021 at St. Rita Catholic Church, Kincaid, IL.  Fr. Esther Spindel

Esther Spindel, 87 of Edinburg, passed away on Thursday, December 9, 2021 at Carriage Crossing Senior Living in Taylorville.  She was born on September 8, 1934 in Aguascalientes, Mexico.  Esther graduated from the American High School in Mexico City in 1952 and went on to attend Texas College of Arts & Industrial in Kingsville, Texas.  She married John G Spindel Jr. on February 2, 1957 in Springfield and he preceded her in death on February 17, 2020.  Esther was a member of the Edinburg United Methodist Church where she sang in the choir and taught Sunday School among other activities.

 

She began her working career at the Franklin Life Insurance Company in Springfield, later working as a secretary for the Edinburg Schools.  Later she worked for J.C. Penny in Springfield and finally as a seamstress for Memorial Medical Center.  She was active in many areas throughout her life including 4-H and Girl Scout Leader, President of the Edinburg Women’s Club, and serving as an election judge.  She enjoyed crafts, traveling, especially to Colorado, and enjoying spicy foods.    


She is survived by her children: Bill Spindel (Pamela) of Springfield, Laurie Ingram (Brad) of Athens, and Cindy Norris (Paul) of Taylorville; grandchildren: Jill Wilson (Charles), Sarah Brockelsby (Garrett), Ivy Havrilka (Adam), Ashley Cantrall (Michael), and Betsy Burris (Austin); great grandchildren: Cheyenne Wilson, Archer Wilson, Evelyn Cantrall, and Levi Havrilka; and brother: Johnny Huegal (Yvonne) of Texas.  She was preceded in death by her parents: Fredrick and Alleen (DeGaris) Huegel; husband: John G Spindel Jr.; sister: Mildred Gonthier; and infant sister: Francis Huegel.

 


A memorial service for Esther will take place at 11:00am on Thursday, December 16, 2021 in the Edinburg United Methodist Church with Rev. Ken Gennicks officiating.  Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service in the church.  Inurnment will be in the Edinburg Cemetery.  Memorials may be made to the Edinburg United Methodist Church or the Alzheimer’s Association.

Marian Melzer

Marian R. Melzer, 92, of Springfield, formerly of Sharpsburg, passed away at 5:49 a.m. on Saturday, December 11, 2021 at Springfield Memorial Hospital.

Marian was born February 23, 1929 in Sharpsburg, the daughter of John and Clara (Toberman) Hargis.  She married Gus R. Melzer on February 27, 1949 in Hewittville.  He preceded her in death on November 17, 1990.

Marian graduated from Edinburg Township High School with the Class of 1947, and went on to retire from St. Vincent’s Memorial Hospital after many years of service.  Marian was an avid collector of gnomes, and looked forward to feeding the squirrels and birds each and every day.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Chris Williams; and sister, Joyce Baker.

 

Marian is survived by her daughter, Janice (husband, Will) Payton of Springfield; grandchildren, Kitty Jo (husband, Scott) Hayward of Taylorville, Christopher John Williams of Taylorville, Jennifer (husband, Wayne) Friday of Springfield, Amanda (husband, Wes) Miller of St. Joseph, and Jason Payton of Springfield; 12 great grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

 

Visitation & Funeral Ceremony: The family will receive guests from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the funeral ceremony at 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 15, 2021 at Shafer-Perfetti & Assalley Funeral Home in Taylorville, with Rev. Clint Cook officiating.

 

Interment will follow the ceremony at Bethel Baptist Cemetery in Sharpsburg.

Gary Dean Vandeveer

Gary Dean Vandeveer, 63, of Springfield, IL, passed away December 1, 2021. He was born March 13, 1958, in Springfield, to the late Fred and Nadine Vandeveer. Gary worked at Thriftway Lumber in Owensboro for over 20 years, and at Lowes in Springfield for over 7 years. He was an avid U.K. basketball fan, loved to build things, and enjoyed Sunday dinners with his family.


Along with his parents, Gary was preceded in death by his sisters, Bonita Colon and Marcella (Buddy) Daugherty; and his sister-in-law, Diane Vandeveer.


He is survived by his daughters, Angel (Brandon) Epison and Brook Vandeveer; his grandchildren, Isaac, Elijah, Christian, Zion, Isreal, and Abrielle; his brothers, Larry (Judy) Vandeveer, Ted (Florence) Vandeveer, Dwayne (Sherry) Vandeveer, and Steve Vandeveer; his sisters, Carol Galicia, Freda Wooten, Linda Perez, Sally Fiscus, and Sarah Witt; and several nieces and nephews.


The funeral service will be 2pm Monday at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory with visitation beginning at 10am. Burial will follow in Owensboro Memorial Gardens.

Beverly A. Bishop

Beverly A. Bishop, 71, passed away at 8:16pm Tuesday, December 7, 2021, at her residence.  She was born on September 28, 1950, in Taylorville, the daughter of the late Richard Dale and Jessie Mae (Skinner) Pruitt.  She married Steven Bishop on June 3, 1967, in Taylorville, and he survives.  Other survivors include her children: Shawn Cox and her companion: Mike Higginson, Shelly and Todd Hatalla, Shane and Carmen Bishop, Shad and Michelle Bishop, her grandchildren: Kyle (Ashley) Cox, Kati (Kyle) Violet, Savannah Bishop, Andrew Wolfe, Hunter Bishop, Colby Bishop, Audrey Bishop, three great grandchildren: Mason, Mychaela, Marie, and many other extended family and friends.

 

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death two brothers: Rex Pruitt and Roger Pruitt.

Linda Beaman

Linda Beaman, 74 of Taylorville, passed away on Tuesday, December 7, 2021 at 2:20 a.m. at Springfield Memorial Hospital in Springfield, IL. She was born on September 4, 1947 in Taylorville, IL, the daughter of Paul and Thelma (Starks) Crevits. She married Dennis Beaman in 1965 and they later divorced.  Linda worked as a clerk at an insurance company in Taylorville, a bookkeeper for Darrell Beckett Insurance in Taylorville, then decided to pursue a career change and obtained a LPN license.  She worked as a nurse at Doctor’s Hospital in Springfield and many years at Decatur Memorial Hospital. 


Linda dearly loved her dog Angie, her children and her grandchildren – no one knew for sure in exactly what order.  Before her health issues prevented it, she worked and volunteered time at the senior citizens center in Taylorville, volunteered time at the Christian County Animal Shelter and the Sangamon County Animal Shelter.  Linda always felt a true calling to help unfortunate animals that could not help themselves.  
Linda courageously fought lung cancer for 14 years like a warrior.  Although her death certificate will show that she died from cancer, the cancer died when she did – so it’s just as fair to say she won the battle.


She is survived by her Daughter: Lorinda Beaman Lamken-Finnell (John Finnell) of Springfield, IL, Son: Robert (Michelle) Beaman of Taylorville, IL, Grandchildren: Travis, Jacob and Connor Lamken all of Springfield, IL; Zachery, Bryce (Craig) and Heather Beaman all of Taylorville, IL, Nephews: Ronnie Cooper and Steve Cooper, Niece: Deb Cooper of Springfield, IL, Susan Fitzgerald of Oklahoma, Cousin: Carol Brown of Taylorville, IL. She was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter in infancy: Theresa Beaman, Brother: Ronald Cooper and half-brother Bill Crevits.

William Joseph Davis

William Joseph Davis, 95 of Taylorville, passed away at 9:05pm on Monday, December 6, 2021 at Taylorville Care Center.  He was born on November 29, 1926 in Taylorville, the son of Joseph Arthur and Alma (Bernowski) Davis.  He graduated from Taylorville High School and served his country during World War II in the Merchant Marines.  He married Patricia Shivers on June 6, 2007 in Taylorville and she preceded him in death on November 7, 2011.  Bill worked for many years as a builder and developer of commercial properties in the Southwest.  He was an avid reader and enjoyed golfing.  He was a member of the Christian County YMCA where he enjoyed exercising.  Bill enjoyed staying close to many of his high school friends, often going out to breakfast together.  He was a member of the Community of Christ Church.  Bill was a faithful supporter of many charities and was dearly loved by his family and friends.


He is survived by his sons: Kenny Shivers (Sue) of Taylorville and Wes Greenfield of Aurora, Colorado; grandchildren: Monica (John) Dorsey, Ann Shivers, and Sarah Shivers all of Taylorville, Eric (Tanya) Greenfield of Aurora, Colorado, and Patrick Greenfield (Diane) of Hernando, Mississippi; nieces and nephews: Bill Swedick (Micky) of Kincaid, Penny German of Taylorville, Rick Davis (Carrie) of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Becky Davis of Las Cruces, New Mexico, and Randy Davis and Robby Davis of Albuquerque, New Mexico; and several great grandchildren and great nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife: Alice Davis; wife: Patricia Shivers-Davis; and siblings: Emma Spaulding, Chuck Swedick, and Robert E. F. Laverta Tewell, 100 of Taylorville passed away on Satuday,December 4, 2021 at 5:00 p.m. at her son’s home in Taylorville, IL. She was born on January 1, 1921 in Britt, IA the daughter of Walter Elmer and Alma Maude (Elder) Prior. She married Lester D. Tewell on April 23, 1942 in the Providence Methodist Church. Laverta was a housewife and seamstress at Summers in Taylorville, IL and a member of The First Church of the Nazarene.

Joanne Lumb, 70 of Taylorville passed away on Monday, December 6, 2021 at 12:29 p.m. at Springfield Memorial Hospital in Springfield, IL. She was born on February 25, 1951 in Taylorville, IL the daughter of Robert and Ruth (Perrine) Brown. She married George Lumb on March 23, 1968 in Taylorville, IL and he preceded her in death on April 22, 2021.

William D. "Bill" Sinnard

William D. “Bill” Sinnard, 53, of Assumption, died December 5, 2021 in Edina, MN.

Celebration of Life services will be held from 1:00 – 5:00 p.m. on December 19, 2021, in St. Mary’s Parish Hall, Assumption, IL.  Memorials may be made to Shriners Hospitals for Children.

Bill was born on March 21, 1968 in Taylorville, IL, the son of Robert and Loretta (Hunt) Sinnard.  He was the tournament director of Smoke’n Aces Poker League and a former machinist with Caterpillar and GSI.  Bill also worked as a truck driver.

Surviving are his children: Alahna (Ryan Bell) Sinnard of Carbondale, IL and Logan Coady of Stonington, IL; mother, Loretta Sinnard of Assumption, IL; brother, Steven (Carol) Sinnard of Assumption, IL; sister, Donna Sinnard of Assumption, IL; and many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews that he loved.

Preceding him in death are his father and brother, Robin Sinnard.

James "Big Ed" VanHooser

James “Big Ed” VanHooser, 82, of Tower Hill, IL, passed away Monday, December 6, 2021 in Memorial Medical Center, Springfield.  He was born August 30, 1939 in Taylorville to the late John & Katherine (Shivers) VanHooser.  Ed married Mary E. VanHooser on December 30, 1961 in Taylorville.  She preceded him in death on April 22, 2014.


Ed was a graduate of Taylorville High School, where he was a football star and still holds the shotput record in the state.  He was the head electrician for Georgia Pacific for 30 years and was the owner of Ed’s Garage in Tower Hill.  He served on the Tower Hill Village board; he was very involved in the community and had a passion for keeping the town on the map.  Ed enjoyed communicating with his Hamm radio and he loved junk cars and his little red wrecker.


Ed is survived by children:     Kathy (Michael) Anderson, Rockford, IL; Penny Jo VanHooser, Tower Hill, IL; Sandy (Thad) Dagen, Herrick, IL; Patty (Jeff) Sparks, Morrisonville, IL; Lisa Renee Plummer, Tower Hill, IL; 13 grandchildren:  Sam, Mandy, Curtis Lee, Megan, Sarah, Doug, Dalton, Tayler, Tanner, Wayde, Allison, Keaton, Hunter; 9 great grandchildren: Alexis, Adrian, Lucas, Collin, Brodey, Corby, Nathan, Jase, Addison, Ava, Mason, Dagen, Dallas, Conner, Kashton, Korbin, Kennon, Isabella Grace & 2 on the way, Lainey & Lyla and sister,     Virginia “Ginny” (Virgil) Saltz, Caldwell, ID.  In addition to his parents & wife, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Francis K. Edward Laverne Craig Sr.

Edward Laverne Craig Sr. 77, of Chatham formerly of Pawnee, was joyfully greeted by his wife as he entered Heaven on Sunday, December 5, 2021 at 8:43 a.m. at his daughters’ residence in Pawnee, IL. He was born on October 26, 1944 in Taylorville, IL the son of Leland and Josephine (Brown) Craig. He married his beautiful bride, Judith Ann Irwin, on August 29, 1965 in the Pawnee Methodist Church and she preceded him in death on February 27, 2019. Ed worked as a coal miner at Peabody Mine #10 for 33 years and then as a door greeter at Meijer in Springfield, IL. He also owned a jewelry store in Pawnee, IL and thoroughly enjoyed doing watch and jewelry repair on the side as a hobby.


He is survived by his daughter: Kathleen (Matt) Crocker of Pawnee, IL, Son: Eddie Craig Jr. of Belleville, IL, Grandchildren: Heather (Eric) Saunders of Abingdon, MD and Matt (Kate) Crocker of New Berlin, IL, Great-Grandchildren: Jackson and Jonah Saunders of Abingdon, MD, several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded by parents, wife and brother: Leland Jr.


Visitation will be held on Friday, December 10, 2021 from 4:00-7:00 p.m. at Sutton Memorial Home in Taylorville. Shirley Louise Wheeler

Shirley Louise Wheeler
1924 – 2021


We celebrate the rich, long life of Shirley Wheeler, 97, who passed away December 5, 2021 in Des Moines, Iowa.


Born October 18, 1924 in Taylorville, Illinois, she graduated from Taylorville High School in 1942. 
In a fairy tale ceremony, Shirley married Felix H. Wheeler in 1944 at the beautiful U.S. Naval Academy chapel in Annapolis. As the wife of a career Navy pilot, Shirley was instrumental in settling new homes from the Florida Keys to Rhode Island. Never landing long in one place, her remarkable independence and resilience was the fabric that held the family together throughout frequent transitions.


Upon Felix’s retirement in 1964, they returned to Illinois to continue their educations. Shirley graduated with honors from the University of Illinois in 1965 and received her master’s degree in 1971. She served as a dedicated and exceptional educator in Monticello, IL for many years.


Shirley has lived a long, rich life and is the last of her longtime high school friends from Taylorville to leave us. She tackled the challenges of age with determination and grace. She has been a role model for her daughter and much-loved granddaughters.

Shirley is survived by her daughter, Diane Wheeler- (Denny) Bast, Des Moines, IA; two greatly-loved granddaughters, Heather Hill, Des Moines and Nikki Peña- (Tom) Infande, Winter Park, FL; three beloved nieces, Kathy (Rick) Franke, Pacific Grove, CA, Linda Rushing, Centralia, IL, and Nancy (Mike) Anderson, Yanceyville, NC; and a dear nephew, Kenneth Hunter, Pacific Grove, CA. Also, Shirley leaves behind many cousins and friends in the Christian County area. 


She was preceded in death by her parents, Clifford C. and Mary Louise (McWard) Hunter of Taylorville, IL, husband Felix, LCDR, USN, Ret., and brother Clifford Eugene Hunter, CAPT, USN, Ret.

Edward E. Hayes

Edward Earl Hays, 85 of Taylorville passed away on Thursday, December 2, 2021 at 6:10 p.m. at Taylorville Memorial Hospital in Taylorville, IL. He was born on September 7, 1936 in Herrick, IL the son of Arthur and Oleta (Lane) Hays. He married Martha Alice Weekly on July 25, 1959 in Tower Hill, IL and she preceded him in death on December 3, 2017. Earl was a member of Taylorville Christian Church in Taylorville. He loved woodworking, playing cards and drinking coffee with his friends. He also loved his family.


He is survived by his daughter: Delorse (Neil) Sphar of Taylorville, IL; sons: Brian (Rita) Hays of Cayuga, IN; Mark (Deb) Hays of Paris, IL; Jimmy (Sarah) Hays of Springfield, IL; grandchildren: Grant, Brian Michael, Brittany, Breanna, Brady, Jodie, Mindy, Paul, Whitney, Hillary, Amber, Eriq, Aleah, Alex, Alexis, Andrew; twenty-one great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, sons: Edward Earl Hays and Laurence Dean Hays; grandson: James Hays Jr., great-granddaughter: Brynslee Edwards, great-grandson: Zaylor Hays and all of his siblings.


Visitation will be held on Saturday, December 11, 2021 from 9:00-12:00 Noon at Sutton Memorial Home in Taylorville. Funeral service will be held immediately following the visitation starting at 12:00 noon at Sutton Memorial Home in Taylorville with Pastor James Jones officiating. Burial will be in Tower Hill Cemetery in Tower Hill, IL.

James P. Wright

James P. Wright, 62, of Springfield, formerly of Taylorville, passed away at 5:58 p.m. on Tuesday, November 30, 2021 at Springfield Memorial Hospital.

James was born April 27, 1959 in Decatur, the son of Carlyle A. and Hazel J. “Pat” (Hurtte) Wright.  He graduated from Central A & M High School, and went on to work as a mechanic for Neal Tire in Decatur, as well as for himself at his farm.  He also spent many years working for R.R. Donnelly, International Paper, and Hydro-Gear.  James married Stacy Raymond, they had two sons, and later divorced.  He enjoyed the outdoors, both fishing and hunting, but his passion was shooting pool.  Over the years, James competed in many pool leagues in Taylorville and Springfield.  

 

He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Carl Wright.

 

James is survived by his sons, Justin Wright of Springfield, and Ben (wife, Elizabeth) Wright of Clarksville, TN; and his grandson, Abraham.

 

Cremation rites will be accorded, and a private graveside ceremony will be held at Pleasant View Cemetery in Assumption.
