George “Mike” Michael Upchurch, 67 of Taylorville passed away on Monday, October 26, 2020 at 9:45 p.m. at Taylorville Memorial Hospital in Taylorville, IL. He was born on February 21, 1953 in Taylorville, IL the son of George and Natalie (Martin) Upchurch. He worked as a Factory Supervisor and Human Resource Manager. Mike loved listening to music, he loved his family and hanging out with friends.  
He is survived by his Sons: Shawn (Mary) Upchurch of Taylorville, IL; Christian Upchurch of Taylorville, IL; Daughters: Alysia (A.J.) Cobble of Mattoon, IL; Darcie Johnson of Mattoon, IL; Grandchildren: Natalie Upchurch, Sydney Newberry, Wrigley Upchurch, Kylie Bedford, Dylan, Jaden, Zander and Stormey Lytle; Two Great-Grandchildren; Brother: Jim (Bonnie) Upchurch of New Iberia, LA; Sister: Jane Hunsche and companion Danny McLaughlin of Taylorville, IL; Brother-in-Law: Nelson Gulso of Kincaid, IL; Several Nieces, Nephews and Cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister: Julie Gulso.

Gordon “Hoss” Lee McKinney, 55, of Taylorville, formerly of Lovington, passed away on Tuesday, October 27, 2020, at Ascension Sacred Heart Hospital in Panama City, FL.

Hoss was born February 6, 1965 in Decatur, the son of Lawrence and Patricia (Crowder) McKinney.  He married Sherri Herpstreith on February 21, 1992 in Las Vegas, NV.

Hoss graduated from Lovington High School in 1983, and he was currently employed as a Retail Construction Superintendent.

He was preceded in death by his father; maternal and paternal grandparents; and his faithful dachshund, Woody.
Hoss is survived by his wife, Sherri McKinney of Taylorville; daughter, Cortney (husband, Will Sommer) McKinney of McKinney, TX; son, Chance McKinney of Taylorville; beloved canine companion, Rupert; mother and step-father, Pat and Joe DiYorio of Lovington; siblings, Anna (husband, Donald) Baxter of Bethany, Pamela (husband, Tim) Barker of Bethany, Laura (husband, James) Reed of Sullivan, Mary (husband, Edward) Rubush of Sullivan, Rev. Novella Parke of Nipomo, CA, Daniel (wife, Teresa) McKinney of Charleston, and Joshua (wife, Tara) McKinney of Allenville; several nieces, nephews, and cousins; and many close friends, both locally and across the country.

Visitation:  The family will receive friends from 3:00-5:30 p.m. on Sunday, November 1, 2020 at Shafer-Perfetti & Assalley Funeral Home in Taylorville.  In keeping with CDC guidelines, only 50 guests at a time will be allowed to visit in the funeral home, and the wearing of masks is suggested.

Kathryn “Katie” Tippitt, 94 of Taylorville, passed away at 4:00 a.m. on Monday, October 26, 2020 at Springfield Memorial Hospital in Springfield, IL. She was born on July 3, 1926 in Zenobia, IL the daughter of Oscar and Della Himstedt. She was the youngest of 9 children. She married Gerald L. Tippitt on December 24, 1948 in Taylorville. They resided in Owaneco for over 50 years. She was a homemaker and a member of the First Church of the Nazarene in Taylorville.
She is survived by her daughter: Gloria (Rich) Milburn of Mesa, AZ; sons: Galen (Connie) Tippitt of Wataga, IL, Marty (Mimi) Tippitt of Alligator, MS, Brad (Carla) Tippitt of Taylorville, IL; 11 grandchildren; and 17 great-Grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, siblings, husband Gerald Tippitt and son Clifford Tippitt.

Frank D. Marsaglia, 82, of Taylorville, passed away at 4:58 p.m. on Friday, October 23, 2020 at Taylorville Care Center.

Frank was born June 15, 1938 in Taylorville, the son of Frank and Violet (Craig) Marsaglia.  He married Martha Ann Beaty on November 22, 1962 at the First Nazarene Church in Taylorville.  She preceded him in death on March 18, 2018.

Frank graduated from Taylorville High School in 1956, and went on to proudly serve our country in the United States Air Force.  Frank spent his entire life farming, and he also worked for FS for many years.  He was a long-time member of the First United Methodist Church of Taylorville.  Frank enjoyed antiquing, but most of all he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by his parents; son, Mark Marsaglia; sister, JoAnn Smith; and brother, Tony Marsaglia.

Frank is survived by his son, Michael (wife, Kiley) Marsaglia of Chatham; grandchildren, Victoria (husband, Garrett) Wilson of Mexico, MO, Bryce Marsaglia of Taylorville, and Luke and Sophia Marsaglia of Chatham; 2 great grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Carl Steven Fixsal, 63 of Morrisonville passed away on Wednesday, October 21, 2020 at 7:43 p.m. at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield, IL. He was born on September 10, 1957 in Taylorville, IL the son of Carl H. Fixsal. He married Shelly K. Lairson on December 2, 1997 in Taylorville, IL. Carl worked as a millright for Zachary Industrial. He loved to hunt, camp and fish. He also loved to raise money for the angel tree and provide bicycles for the needy children. He was a firearm fanatic, loved to work on guns and loved to target shoot with Mike and Ken.  Carl was Captain for the Morrisonville Fire Department for 27 years and he was a volunteer for the Morrisonville Ambulance for 20 years.

Helen Elizabeth Reeter, 96 of Mt. Auburn, passed away at 12:30am on Wednesday, October 22, 2020 at Lincolnshire Place in Decatur.  She was born on February 9, 1924 in Mt. Auburn, the daughter of Emery Vernon and Goldie Henrietta (Marshall) Bailey.  She married William Fredrick Reeter on August 16, 1941 in Mt. Auburn and he preceded her in death on August 28, 1963. Helen worked along side her husband on the family farm and continued to farm following his passing.  Along with operating the farm, she worked other jobs, doing whatever she had to while raising her 3 children.  She was a member of the Mt. Auburn United Methodist Church and the Mt. Auburn Community Club.  Helen was a 50-year member of the Order of Eastern Star.  She loved to garden and work in the yard.  Helen was a loving mother and grandmother, living a long and healthy life.  She will be dearly missed by her family.
She is survived by her children: Randy Reeter (Darlene) of Blue Mound, Deborah Coontz of Mt. Auburn, and Robin Buerkett (Robbie) of Pleasant Plains; grandchildren: William K. Reeter, Lance Reeter, Tonya Leka, Eric Coontz, Jenny Long, and Jamie Long; 4 extended grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; and 4 great-great grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother, grandson: Paul Reeter, and great grandson: Zach Reeter.

David “Stoney” Hugh Stone, 90 of Pana formerly of Taylorville, passed away on Wednesday, October 21, 2020 at 6:20 a.m. at Heritage Health Care Center in Pana, IL. He was born on June 23, 1930 in Waverly, IL the son of Richard and Nellie (Lash) Stone. He married Norma A. Porter on June 10, 1950 in Springfield, IL and she preceded him in death on October 6, 2007. David owned Stone Janitor Service and he also was employed by the Taylorville School District as a janitor for several years. He was a member of the Shelbyville and Carlinville Horseshoe Clubs.
He is survived by his Sons: David T. Stone of Columbia, MO; Randy (Leigh) Stone of Springfield, IL; Danny (Jessica) Stone of Mattoon, IL. Ten Grandchildren. Harold Dwaine Moomey, 88 of Moberly, Missouri, passed away at 6:24 a.m. on Wednesday, October 21, 2020, in Moberly.  He was born on September 17, 1932 in Millersville, Illinois, the son of Harold Owen and Olga (Waters) Moomey.  He married Virginia Faye Drain on February 4, 1955, in Tahlequah, Oklahoma.  Virginia preceded him in death on October 19, 2016.  Mr. Moomey, was a longtime farmer in Owaneco, IL and in Moberly, MO and, for several years, was a driver for PSI Trucking, Huntsville, MO. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served in the Korean War.  Harold enjoyed reading, fishing, yardwork and woodworking projects.
He is survived by his daughters: Terry (Tim) Murrell of University City, Missouri, and Tamara Moomey of Moberly, Missouri; grandchildren: Elissa Murrell, Alison Murrell, Jacob Banning, and Jared Banning; great grandchildren: Isaiah Murrell-Thomas, Sarah Murrell, Emma Banning, Cameron Banning, and McKenzie Banning; sister: Janet Engeling, Morrisonville, IL and brother, Ronald Moomey, Owaneco, IL.  He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; and brothers, Kenneth Moomey and Virgil Moomey.

Mary Frances Bell, 79 of Taylorville, passed away at 6:45am on Wednesday, October 21, 2020 in her home.  She was born on May 30, 1941 in Taylorville, the daughter of Lawrence E. and Cecelia (Chlebus) Dunn.  She married Robert E. Bell on January 14, 1961 in Taylorville.  Mary graduated from Taylorville High School in 1959 and remained life-long friends with several of her classmates, who proudly referred to themselves as “The Dirty Dozen”.  She worked as a secretary for the Taylorville School District for 30 years, first at the Jr. High, and most of her career at the High School.  Aside from her regular office duties, Mary spent many years selling tickets to the high school sporting events.  She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and loved to collect angels.  In her free time, she enjoyed spending time playing the machines at the riverboat.  Mary was loved by everyone that knew her and had countless “adopted” children and grandchildren who affectionately referred to her as Ma Bell.  She dearly loved her grandsons and never missed a sporting event they were participating in.  Mary truly had a love for life, and never met a stranger.  She will be dearly missed by everyone that knew her.  
She is survived by her husband: Bob Bell of Taylorville; daughter: Juli Mantia, husband Patrick, of St. Louis; grandsons: Nathan Bell of Peoria and Nicholas Bell of Louisville, Kentucky; daughter-in-law: Teri Simon and several nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her parents; son: Jeffrey Bell; and siblings: Pauline Armes, Larry Dunn, and Robert Dunn.

Shari K. Boggs, 79 of Edinburg passed away on Tuesday, October 20, 2020 at 7:25 a.m. at her home in Edinburg, IL after a lengthy illness. She was born on March 7, 1941 in Springfield, IL the daughter of George W. and Ethel I. (Bridge) Neisewander. She married Quincy Boggs on April 6, 1957 in the Edinburg Christian Church in Edinburg, IL. Shari worked at Horace Mann and Franklin Life Insurance and -during her retirement - kept books for Quality Builders Enterprises (their family business). She to Crochet and made many hats and scarves that were donated to various charities. She was creative and had sewing and crafting skills that could turn everyday items into beautiful gifts and décor. She was devoted to her family and her God and was always willing to help anyone in need. Not a fan of cold weather, Shari and Quincy enjoyed some time in Arizona; she always had a smile on her face and a kind word on her lips and may have been seen occupying a seat at a couple of the local slot machines.
She is survived by her Husband: Quincy Boggs of Edinburg, IL; Daughters: Kathy (Boggs) Kachanoski and Connie Boggs both of Springfield, IL; Several Nieces, Nephews and Cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers: George Neisewander Jr. and Charles Neisewander and her sister: Shirley McVaigh.

James William Banko, 77 of Taylorville, passed away at 3:35p.m. on Tuesday, October 20, 2020 at Taylorville Memorial Hospital.  He was born on March 9, 1943 in Taylorville, the son of John and Augusta (Krautwald) Banko.  He married Marcia McClanahan on April 10, 1971 in Charleston.  Jim graduated from Taylorville High School where he was an accomplished athlete, lettering in basketball, baseball, and football.  He went on to graduate from Western Illinois University where he played Baseball.  Jim served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in England and Germany.  He began his teaching career in Witt where he worked a year before coming to the Taylorville School District as an elementary PE teacher for a year.  He then transferred to the high school where he taught for 28 years until his retirement in 2000. He will forever be remembered by his students and colleagues for being a jokester and his sense of humor.  While teaching, Jim also spent many years as a coach for track, baseball, football, and basketball.  In 1984 he led the THS baseball team to the Final 4 of the State Tournament.  He was inducted into the Taylorville High School Sports Hall of Fame as both a student athlete and a coach.  Mr. Banko made a lasting impact on all the students he taught and coached.  He was a member of Davis Memorial Christian Church and the VFW.  In his free time, he enjoyed golfing, playing cards, and loved dogs.  
He is survived by his wife: Marcia Banko of Taylorville; sisters: Pat Klinger of Ft. Myers, Florida and Shirley Ferguson of Decatur; and nieces and nephews: Elizabeth Banko (Buddy Clark), Kent Banko, Dr. Lainie Banko, and Grant Banko.  He was preceded in death by his parents; sister: Barbara McWhinnie; brother: John Banko; and Nephew: Jared Banko.

Shirley Belle Owens, 87 of Springfield, passed away on Monday, October 19, 2020 at Taylorville Care Center.  She was born on December 31, 1932 in Springfield, the daughter of Samuel and Delilah Zink.  She married William Owens and he preceded her in death on August 25, 1989.  Shirley attended Brown’s Business College and was a member of the Lutheran Church.  She loved cats and had many over the years that she cared for.  
She is survived by her daughters: Crystal Gagler (Jeff) of Frankfort, Illinois and Sarah Bockemeier (Karl) of Maryland Heights, Missouri; grandchildren: Jason, Megan, Mina, and Nadelyn; sister: Ramona Legg of Taylorville; and brother: John Zink of Kentucky.  She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son: Byron Owens; daughter: Shari Carroll; and sister: Betty Robinson.
Shirley will be laid to rest next to her husband at Camp Butler National Cemetery in Riverton.  A graveside service will take place at 2pm on Monday, October 26, 2020 at Camp Butler with Rev. Louis Nello Tognacci of Chandler, Arizona passed away on October 14, 2020.  He was born March 30, 1940 to Virginia and Ned Tognacci and grew up in Taylorville, Illinois.  He is preceded in death by his parents, brothers Jack Ronchetto and Tommy Tognacci, sisters Margie Tilton and Elaine Brown, and his son, Mark Tognacci.  He leaves behind Marilyn (Weiss), his wife of nearly 50 years, their sons Ned Tognacci (Rachelle), Bob Tognacci (Emily), his brother Jim, and grandchildren Chloe, Lizzy, Ava, Joey and Sam.  
 Lou grew up in quintessential small-town America.  He spoke fondly of his hometown of Taylorville, IL, where he spent his teenage days playing sports, singing in local groups, playing the trombone with the municipal band, and frequenting the local bakery.  Lou graduated from Taylorville Highschool in 1958.  
After graduation, Lou maintained his love of music, art, literature, and philosophy.  Influenced by Jack Kerouac and James Dean, Lou spent a summer in Venice Beach, CA.  Later, he joined the United States Air Force where he spent much of his time in White Sands, New Mexico with his first wife, Sandy and their son, Mark.  Lou graduated with a master’s degree in Social Psychology from New Mexico State University.  Lou pursued a doctorate at the University of Colorado where he conducted research and taught.  While in Boulder he also worked as the manager of The Foot of the Mountain Motel, a place his young sons loved to visit. After relocating to Arizona, Louis worked at the Marc Center and then as a senior transportation planner for ADOT. 
After retirement, Lou enjoyed spending time with family, and putting his love of statistics and strategy to use by committing fully to his fantasy sports teams.  Lou, Marilyn, and family enjoyed the beautiful outdoors by hiking and playing sports together.  He shared his love of learning with his sons by reading, playing chess, and engaging them in discussions about many topics. He continued this tradition with his grandchildren and spent many family dinners engaging them in conversation.  He marveled at each grandchild’s individual development and made sure they all knew they were wonderful and cherished.  
Lou, an avid conversationalist, thrived on the human connection.  Although a perfectionist himself, he was accepting, generous, and caring towards all others.  He was a true intellectual and even achieved the ranking of Grandmaster in Chess.  He was interesting and shared unique perspectives on movies, books, current events, and life. He never missed an opportunity to tell a loved one he cared.  Despite declining health, he made sure to tell each visitor, “I love you.”   We love you, Lou.  You were wonderful. 

Richard Allen Hubbard, 75, of Forsyth, passed into eternity on Sunday, October 18, 2020 at Villa Clara Nursing and Rehabilitation in Decatur.

Allen, known by many of his friends as “Sam”, was born April 5, 1945 at Taylorville Memorial Hospital, the son of Wilbur and Katherine (Cockrahan) Hubbard, Sr.  He worked for Bill Hager, assisting with auctions, yard work, and numerous other jobs until Bill passed into eternity.  Allen then continued doing odd jobs, and providing handyman services for others in the community. He resided at Park Glen in Taylorville until 2013, when he moved to Decatur to be closer to his sister, Sharon. Allen lived in Belvedere Centre Plaza for two years, before moving to Hickory Point in Forsyth, where he resided until his death.

He was preceded in death by his parents; great grandmother, Minnie Spears; grandmother, Mary Cockrahan; aunts, Hattie Duffy and Bea Mitchel; brother, Wilbur Hubbard, Jr.; and nephew, C.J. Hubbard.

Surviving Allen to cherish his memories are his sister, Sharon L. (Hubbard) Willis of Forsyth; brother, Carl Hubbard of Taylorville; cousin, Sheila of Las Vegas, NV; nephews, Anthony of Hillsboro, Norman of TX, and Reginald Jr. of MD; nieces, Angela and Cori, both of MD, and Candy of TX; second cousins who called him “Uncle Allen”, Thuron (Angel), Little Thomas, and Julian of Harvey, and Missy (Raymond), Roz, Dymond, and Dezmond, all of Las Vegas.

Visitation and Funeral Ceremony:  The family will receive guests from 10:00 a.m. until the time of ceremony at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 22, 2020 at Shafer-Perfetti & Assalley Funeral Home, 202 W. Franklin St., Taylorville, IL 62568, with Rev. Tiney Walker officiating. 

Interment will follow the ceremony at Oak Hill Cemetery in Taylorville.

Mary Laquita “Joy” Dorr, 87 of Taylorville passed away October 17, 2020 at Taylorville Care Center.

She was born September 12, 1933 in Tovey, Ill. to parents Bernard and Mary (Martin) Hake. She married Donald Dwight Door on July 11, 1959 at St. Rita’s Catholic Church in Kincaid, Ill. Donald preceded her in death on January 9, 2013.
Mary was a homemaker, member of St. Rita’s Church in Kincaid and enjoyed photography and collecting antiques. She graduated from Kincaid High School.

Survivors include daughter Dena (Joe) Goeckner of Newberry, S.C., son Joe (Gloria) Dorr of Pana, Ill., sister Beverly (Dwight) Taylor of Taylorville, Ill., grandchildren: Lacey (JB) Head of Brookhaven, Ga., Luke (Kimberly) Goeckner of Mooresville, N.C., Caleb Goeckner of Irmo, S.C., Hannah (Ben) Nichols of Pomaria, S.C., great-grandchildren: Wynn Goeckner of Mooresville, N.C., Aubrey and Riley Head of Brookhaven, Ga., Meghan Nichols of Pomaria, S.C., and numerous cousins and one aunt. She is preceded in death by her husband, brother Bernie Hake, and her parents. 
Private graveside services will be held on Tuesday, October 20, 2020 at 10 a.m. in Oak Hill Cemetery in Taylorville.

Philip Martin, 89 of Springfield, died at 12:08 p.m., Friday, October 16, 2020 at Lewis Memorial Christian Village in Springfield. 

Mr. Martin was born on May 18, 1931 in Lincoln, to Sidney & Marguerite (Fisher) Martin. He attended Lanphier High School in Springfield and graduated in 1949. During his high school years, he showed sheep for the FFA. Mr. Martin, the first in his family to attend college, completed his undergraduate work at ISU, and later attended the U of I for his Masters in Art Education. He married Nancy Ann Campbell on August 21, 1951, and she preceded him in death after almost 66 years of marriage on June 27, 2017. Mr. Martin started the Art Program at Taylorville High School in 1953, and he retired in 1991. He taught as a substitute teacher for 11 years after retiring. He also taught adult art education classes at Lincoln Land College. In addition to his love of teaching art, Mr. Martin enjoyed flying, was a licensed pilot, and inspired many others to fly. Many will remember him for moonlighting as a sign painter, his mural work and his graphic design. Mr. Martin was a member of the Illinois Art Education Association. 

Mr. Martin is survived by his three children: Pamela Martin of Springfield; Jane DeBerry of Taylorville; Christopher Martin of Springfield; and his grandsons: Drew Martin, Blake Martin, Alexander Rickman, Brandon Rickman. 

In addition to his wife Nancy, Mr. Martin was preceded in death by his parents; his stepfather, Frank Fisher, sister, Shirley Gilmore, brother Carlis Martin, and one nephew, Michael Martin. 

Following Mr. Martin’s wishes, a private inurnment will take place at Oak Hill Cemetery. Leland R. Boehme, 83 of Taylorville, passed away at 4:30am on Friday, October 16, 2020 at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield.  He was born on August 2, 1937 in Litchfield, the son of Marvin Jon and Harriet Louise (Bierbaum) Boehme.  Leland graduated from Litchfield High School where he played football and was named All Conference in the Midstate Conference.  He went on to play football at Upper Iowa University where he graduated with his bachelor’s degree.  On November 21, 1955 he married Carol Ann Slightom in Corinth, Mississippi and she preceded him in death on March 25, 2013.  He was a member of Davis Memorial Christian Church.  Leland taught biology in the Nokomis and Taylorville School Districts for many years.  He enjoyed coaching throughout his years of teaching.  Leland was an accomplished vocalist and performed in and directed many plays and musicals.  His proudest role was playing Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof at Millikin University.  He enjoyed playing the role of Santa for many years, bringing smiles to countless children.  He impacted and influenced the lives of all that he knew.  Leland had a personality bigger than life.  His will be forever remembered for his wit, humor, stories, and love of life.

He is survived by his children: daughter: Yvonne Rae Fletcher of Taylorville, 3 sons: Kevin Dean Boehme and wife Tracie, Brian Kurt Boehme and wife Tammy all of Taylorville, and Andrew Jon Boehme and wife Janine of Ringgold, Georgia; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren; brother: Marvin Dean Boehme (Irma) of Iowa; and beloved dog: Fred P. Boehme.  He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and brother: Keith Boehme.

Leland will be cremated, and a memorial service will take place at noon on Tuesday, October 20, 2020 at McClure Funeral Home in Taylorville with Rev. Danny Lee Rose, 65 of Taylorville passed away on Tuesday, October 13, 2020 at his home in Taylorville, IL. He was born on May 4, 1955 in Goodrich, Michigan the son of Robert and Betty (Sexton) Rose. He married Karen Gates in April of 1979. Danny worked as a Machinist at Fiat Allis and he was a member of the NRA.

Charles Harvey Saul, 96 of Taylorville passed from this life on Tuesday, October 13, 2020 at 11:30 a.m. at Taylorville Care Center in Taylorville, IL. Charlie was born on June 27, 1924 in Springfield, IL the son of George and Alice (Smith) Saul. He married Ruby Morris on December 24, 1947 in Springfield, IL and she survives. Charlie began his working life as a paper boy and a grocery delivery boy in Springfield, moving on to work at Allis Chalmers. Later Charlie was engaged in farming for 50 years and rounding out his life as the Plant Manager for Midstate Salvage Corp for 21 years retiring at 81 years of age.
Charlie is survived by Ruby, his bride of 73 years, children: Carolyn (Neal) Lebeter of Taylorville, Sharon (Randy) Smith of Kingman, AZ, grandchildren: Randy C. Smith of Taylorville; Jennifer Lebeter of Morrisonville, and several great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins including his special cousin Pat Sapp Sawyer. Charlie was preceded in death by his parents, brothers: George Saul and Larry Saul; Sisters: Betty Hoggit and Alice Mae Tuebner. Charlie was often teased about having been preceded in death by one famous grandparent King Saul of Israel.

Norman L. Smith, 91 of Taylorville passed away on Tuesday, October 13, 2020 at 2:05 p.m. at Taylorville Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Taylorville, IL. He was born on November 22, 1928 in Taylorville, IL the son of Floyd R. and Mildred (Buffington) Smith. He worked as a farmer and was a Veteran of the Korean Conflict serving in the United States Army.
He is survived by his Brothers: Dale (Annie) Smith of Pennsylvania, James (Judy) Smith of Florida; Sisters: Beulah Buhr of Bourbonnais, IL, Shirley (Herb) Hendricks of Taylorville, IL, Beverly Rathgeber of Morrisonville, IL; Floanna Crowley of Wichita, KS, Carol Herren of Springfield, IL; Several Nieces, Nephews and Cousins. Otto Thomas Borgic, 64, of Taylorville, formerly of Morrisonville, passed away at 2:15 a.m. on Tuesday, October 13, 2020 at Decatur Memorial Hospital.

Otto was born March 7, 1956 in Taylorville, the son of Darrell and Martha (Kessler) Borgic. He married Brenda Stewart in May of 1979 in Taylorville, and they later divorced.  Otto graduated from Morrisonville High School in 1975, and earned a certificate from Bailey Technical School in St. Louis.  He was engaged in farming for most of his life, and he enjoyed fishing.

He was preceded in death by his father; maternal grandparents, George and Jessie Kessler; and paternal grandparents, John and Evelyn Borgic.

Otto is survived by his mother, Martha Borgic of Taylorville; children, Tracie (husband, Robbie) Wise of Greenville, Brian Borgic of Taylorville, and Aaron (fiancée, Dana) Borgic of Troy, MO; siblings, Raymond (wife, Diane) Borgic of Chicago, Barb (husband, John) Rankin of CO, John (wife, Bonnie) Borgic of CA, Vince Borgic of Joliet, Dale (Linda Getz) Borgic of Taylorville, and Mark (wife, Violet) Borgic of Taylorville; and several nieces and nephews.

Virginia Sassatelli, 91 of Taylorville passed away on Friday, October 9, 2020 at 8:38 p.m. at Taylorville Care Center in Taylorville, IL. She was born on June 10, 1929 in Kincaid, IL the daughter of Lester and Elizabeth (Loveless) Blake. She married Reno A. Sassatelli on June 25, 1949 in Taylorville, IL and he preceded her in death on June 30, 2006. She worked as a homemaker and she was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Taylorville, Taylorville Catholic Daughters of America and Christian County Home Extension. She loved to sew, knit and she loved to cook. She especially loved her grandchildren. 
She is survived by her son: John (Denise) Sassatelli of Taylorville, IL; daughter: Susan (Roger) Ingram of Pawnee, IL; fourteen grandchildren, twenty-eight great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, brothers: David, Joseph and Dennis Blake; Sisters: Lillian Greene, Louise Mitchell, Betty Frisch, Helen Blake and Patricia Halleck; Several Nieces, Nephews and Cousins. Mr. Ronald Lee Verbiski, 81, of Bulpitt, IL passed from this life at 2:35 a.m. Thursday, October 8, 2020 at Memorial Medical Center, Springfield.
He was born in Kincaid, IL February 15, 1939 the son of John and Mary Mildred (Burkhart) Verbiski.  Ronald married Priscilla A. Grobosky August 17, 1959 in Taylorville, IL and she preceded him in death on July 3, 2005.  
Mr. Verbiski graduated from Kincaid High School in 1957 and honorably served in the U.S. Navy from 1957 to 1961.  He was a member of the Kincaid Baptist Church, and U.M.W.A. #1819.  Ron worked as a coal miner for 37 years at Mine #10 and 4 years at Marissa.  He enjoyed spending time with and was immensely proud of his family.  Mr. Verbiski was known as a Patriot.
Surviving are a son Greg and wife Michele Verbiski of Jeisyville, IL a daughter Mary and husband David Baker of Murrells Inlet, S.C. grandsons Gregory and wife Amy Verbiski of Altus, OK, Evan German of Murrells Inlet, SC great-granddaughters Payton and Payslee Verbiski of Altus, OK and Rory and Ansley German of Murrells Inlet, SC., a sister Joyce Miller of Springfield, IL his loyal companion Jan Stover of Bulpitt, IL along with several cousins, nieces and nephews.  
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Priscilla, and a brother Robert “Bob” Verbiski.

Evelyn Beatrice (Jones) Emerson, 68 of Taylorville passed away on Wednesday, October 7, 2020 at 12:25 a.m. at her home in Taylorville, IL. She was born on October 2, 1934 in Taylorville, IL the daughter of Raymond and Myrtle (Yard) Jones. She married Frank T. Emerson Sr. on August 20, 1955 in Taylorville, IL and he preceded her in death on July 25, 2006. 
She is survived by her Children: Vanessa (Joe) Leach, Frank T. (Mickey) Emerson, Bart (Julie) Emerson all of Taylorville, IL; Grandchildren: Joshua Leach, Colton (Tavia) Leach, Evy Leach, Stephanie (Glen) Goodrich, Franklin T. (Kayla) Emerson III, Gabriel Emerson, Timothy (Amanda) Prehn; Great-Grandsons: Emrys and Gunner Leach; Siblings: Mary Mollet, Bud Jones, Bill Jones, and Donna Pasqueno. Mike Rea “Gunslingr”, 76 of Taylorville passed away on Saturday, October 3, 2020 at his home in Taylorville, IL. He was born on October 30, 1943 in Chicago, IL the son of Clarence B. and Lorene E. (Pifer) Rea. Mike retired from Caterpillar in Decatur. He was a member of the Taylorville Eagles, Mound Lodge #122 AF & AM in Taylorville and Ansar Shrine. He enjoyed to hang out with his local Taylorville friends.  
He is survived by his Sons: Danny (Heidi) Rea of Warrensburg, IL; Mike “Mikey” Rea of SC; R. Rea and Wife; Daughter: Julie (Ron) Hadley of Pana, IL; Grandchildren: Daniel and Hanah Rea of Illinois, Shayna Hadley of Colorado and Blake (Kaley) Hadley of Pana, IL; Great-Grandchildren: Paisley Rea-Ann, Natalyn Blake Rose, Maebry and Landry. Alan (Doug) Reid, 67, passed away in his home on Monday, October 5, 2020. 

Alan was born on January 5, 1953, the son of Betty (Kalips) Reid and John Paul Reid. 

Years ago, Alan worked for G.P in Taylorville and a lawn service in Florida. 

He was preceded in death by his parents and one nephew. 

He is survived by two sisters, Kathy (husband, Dick) Coy and Ruth (husband, Bob) Tex of Taylorville; one brother, John David (wife, Ann) Reid of White Mills, KY; special cousin, Linda Breeden of Durant, OK; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. 

Cremation will be provided by Lincoln Land Cremation Society. Due to COVID-19, no ceremonies will be held at this time.

Debra Rena LeFever, 59 of Taylorville passed away on Wednesday, September 30, 2020 at 5:01 p.m. at her home in Taylorville, IL. She was born on June 8, 1961 in Broward County, FL the daughter of Carl Douglas and Betty (Edwards) Nolen. Debbie was a member of the Taylorville Evangelical Free Church and she worked at Springfield Clinic in Taylorville and SIU School of Medicine in Springfield for many years.

Brent Walter Binger, 86 of Taylorville passed away on Thursday, October 1, 2020 at Taylorville Care Center in Taylorville, IL. Brent was born to Henry David Binger and Lorrene (Lester) Binger on August 4, 1934 in Philadelphia, PA. They moved to Pittsburgh, PA when he was 10 months old in the only vehicle they owned, a Harley Davidson motorcycle with a sidecar. He had all his schooling in Pittsburgh except his senior year that he finished at Mt. Zion High School, graduating in 1952 while living in Dalton City, IL. Brent married Maxine Lowe, they later divorced. He married Linda Sue Beckham in Boody, IL on March 20, 1959; they celebrated their 60th anniversary in March, 2019.

Brent was owner/operator of the Taylorville Dairy Queen for 18 years (1983-2000). He was previously employed at superior Welding Company (25 years) and Mason Steel Company in Decatur.
He was a life Member of the National Rifle Association, member of Taylorville Rifle and Pistol Club, past member of Superior Welding bowling team and American Motorcycle Association. He enjoyed target shooting, riding his Harley, and collecting his beer bottle collection of over 700 bottles from all over the United States and other countries.
Brent is survived by his wife: Linda, daughter Cheri Jean Engle of Blue Mound, IL, sons: Rustin David Binger (Lauren Berry) of Stoughton, WI and Devin Michael Binger (JoAnn) of Decatur, 5 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren, cousin Dean (Betty) Phillips. He was preceded in death by his parents.

William “Bill” Garrett of Taylorville, Illinois died unexpectedly in an automobile accident in Kincaid, Illinois on Saturday, October 3 at the age of 67.

Bill is survived by his wife of 47 years, Patricia (Chausse) Garrett of Taylorville, his daughter Stacey Wallace and her husband Chris of Apison, TN, his son Eric Garrett and his wife Jamie of Owaneco, IL, his grandsons Brody and Ethan Garrett of Owaneco, and his brother Darrell Garrett (Lis) of Palmer, IL. Bill was preceded in death by his parents Bernard and Ruth (Harmon) Garrett.

Bill was born in Springfield, Illinois on June 20, 1953. He graduated from Morrisonville High School in 1971 and attended Lakeland Community College in Mattoon, Illinois. Bill operated and actively farmed Garrett Farms for 36 years before ultimately retiring in 2009. His work was his passion and in addition to bringing him professional success was something that he truly loved. Locally, for nearly a decade, Bill was a board member at the Assumption Cooperative Grain Co., and he, along with his son Eric, donated significant time to coaching youth baseball and basketball teams.

Bill was regarded by all who knew him as a wonderful son, husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He never met a stranger and was known for his inviting smile, which would light up a room. Bill was an avid outdoorsman who relished his opportunities to fish or hunt, and he was an animal lover who took great pleasure in spending time with his cats Morris and Tommy. He enjoyed traveling with his wife Pat to see different parts of the country, indulging in great meals along the way. In all, Bill visited 46 of our country’s 50 states, an accomplishment of which he was quite proud. He was also a regular nearly every morning at the Taylorville McDonald's, where he enjoyed coffee with some of his many friends, but most of all Bill enjoyed being with and mentoring his grandsons, to whom he was a figure larger than life.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 8, 2020 from 9:30-11:00 a.m. at Sutton Memorial Home in Taylorville. Funeral Service will be immediately following the visitation starting at 11:00 a.m. at Sutton Memorial Home in Taylorville with Rev. Dayle Badman officiating and all are welcome to attend. Burial will be held in Oak Hill Cemetery in Taylorville.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Boy Scout Troop 132 at the Taylorville Presbyterian Church, South Fork United Methodist Church, or the Taylorville FFA.

Edward F. Voggetzer, 84 of Taylorville, passed away at 4:05am on Saturday, October 3, 2020 at Decatur Memorial Hospital.  He was born on December 16, 1935 in Pana, the son of Anthony “Tony” and Velma (Fink) Voggetzer.  He married Marilyn D. Noren on July 19, 1958 in Taylorville and they recently celebrated 62 years of marriage.  Ed was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in occupied Germany.  He was the oldest living Past Commander of VFW Post 4495 in Taylorville.  Ed owned and operated Auto Parts and Machine in Taylorville for many years.  He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church.  Ed served for over 20 years on the City of Taylorville Board of Appeals.  He was an avid golfer and worked as a ranger at Lake Shore Golf Course for many years.  Ed was a diehard fan of the Chicago Bears and Fighting Illini, and was proud to be a member of the U of I Foundation President’s Club.  Ed will always be remembered for his sense of humor.  He was a true people-person, having never met a stranger.  He adored his family, especially his grandchildren by whom he will be dearly missed.  

Ed is survived by his wife: Marilyn Voggetzer of Taylorville; children: Vonnie L. English (Ron) of Plainfield, Indiana and Anthony F. Voggetzer; grandchildren: Mary C. English and Emily A. English of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, Jacob A. English of Plainfield, Indiana, and Andrew Zajac and Alex Zajac of Mesa, Arizona; and beloved dog: Baxter.  He was preceded in death by his parents.

Ed will be cremated, and a memorial mass will be held at 1pm on Thursday, October 8, 2020 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Taylorville with Fr. Richard Patrick Moran, 89, of Taylorville, IL, passed away at 5:25 a.m. on Saturday,
October 3, 2020 at Decatur Memorial Hospital.

Richard, known to many as “Red”, was born April 11, 1931 in Decatur, the son of Richard Bernard and Alta (Drone) Moran.  He married Dina Pelati on February 4, 1951 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Taylorville, and they enjoyed over 65 years of marriage.  She preceded him in death on September 7, 2016.

Richard graduated from Taylorville High School in 1945, where he was a talented running back.  He went on to proudly serve his country in the United States Air Force, serving two tours of duty in the Korean War.  Upon his honorable discharge, he worked as a union laborer for 20 years.  Richard was a long-time member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, as well as a lifetime member of both the American Legion Post #73 and V.F.W. Post #4495, where he served on the honor guard for 25 years.  He was a true patriot, and was proud of his service to his country.  Richard was a Taylorville sports fanatic, rarely missing a game on the radio, and he was an avid pool player.  Above all, he loved spending time with his family, and he always enjoyed an iced cold beer. 

He was also preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Christopher P. Venters; great grandson, Samuel Egizii; daughter-in-law, Michelle (Ward) Moran; sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Schultte Bishop, Jr.; and brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Dante and Barb (Noren) Pelati.

Richard is survived by his daughters, Kathy (husband, David) Coplea of Springfield, and Janine (Dennis Miller) Fabian of Taylorville; sons, Steve (wife, Renee) Moran of Taylorville, Mark (wife, Lisa) Moran of West Chester, OH, Bill Moran of Taylorville, and Dave (wife, Marcie) Moran of Springfield; 13 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; and his beloved dog, Barney.

Visitation & Funeral Mass: The family will receive friends from 10:00-11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 7, 2020 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 108 W. Adams St., Taylorville, IL 62568. A private family funeral mass will follow the visitation at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Msgr. David S. Lantz, celebrant.  In keeping with CDC guidelines, social distancing will be required, and the wearing of face masks is recommended.

Interment with military honors will follow mass at Oak Hill Cemetery in Taylorville.

Brenda Sue Tirey-Spoon, 62 of Virden formerly of Taylorville passed away on Thursday, October 1, 2020 at 7:37 a.m. at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield, IL. She was born on February 27, 1958 in Taylorville, IL the daughter of Floyd and Geneva (Jones) Tirey. She married Daniel Spoon on February 11, 2011 in Auburn, IL. Brenda worked as a housekeeper for the Staybridge Suites. She was a member of the Pinfall Wrestling Association in Springfield. She loved to play with her animals and cook. Brenda always wanted to be sure that her family and friends were happy and taken care of.

She is survived by her Husband: Daniel Spoon of Virden, IL; Son: Michael Craft of Pawnee, IL; Daughters: Tina LeeAnn Wheeler of Girard, IL; Jennifer Steele of Chatham, IL; Grandchildren: Taylor Steele, Chelsy Garren, Kaydence Wilson, David Garren, Stephanie Bown, Damien Stilwell, Matthew Stilwell, Emily Stilwell, Kalvyn Craft, Krystal Craft, Kyler Kahl, Lizzie Craft; Great-Granddaughter: Allysin Embree; Brother: Richard Tirey of Jeiseyville, IL; Several Nieces, Nephews and Cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister: Judy Brown. 

Brenda will be cremated and there will be services at a later date.

Donald T. Tippitt, 89 of Taylorville passed away on Tuesday, September 29, 2020 at 3:25 p.m. at Taylorville Care Center in Taylorville, IL. He was born on November 28, 1930 in Taylorville, IL the son of Dudley and Hazel (Foster) Tippitt. He married Gladys E. Prior on November 5, 1950 in Taylorville, IL and she preceded him in death on December 18, 2016. Don worked as a maintenance man at Nazarene Acers and was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene in Taylorville. He loved singing and the St. Louis Cardinals.

He is survived by his Son: Daniel Tippitt of Dawson, IL; Daughter: Linda (Patrick) Regan of Havelock, NC; Nine Grandchildren; Fifteen Great-Grandchildren; Brother: Earl Tippitt; Sisters: Charlene Basil and Anna Michels; Several Nieces, Nephews and Cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, daughter: Diana, son: Bruce, sisters: Zelma, Rita and brothers: Gerald and Rondal.

Betty Jean Jackson, 90 of Taylorville, passed away at 2:30am on Friday, October 2, 2020 in Taylorville Care Center.  She was born on July 2, 1930 in Visalia, California, the daughter of Edward and Cora (Rogers) Jackson.  Betty was a member of the Mt. Zion Lutheran Church in Nokomis.  She operated Betty’s Tavern for several years and also was a home healthcare provider.  She was an avid fan of the St. Louis Cardinals and loved watching games while enjoying a cold Stag beer.  More than anything, she loved her family and was blessed to be able to help babysit her great grandchildren.  
She is survived by her daughters: Deby Dickey, Karen Argo, and Joni Durbin, all of Taylorville; grandchildren: Wendy Michelle Oller of Taylorville, Teresa Ann Kunkes (Nick) of Bloomington, and Thomas Trevor Oller of Taylorville; great grandchildren: Marissa Elizabeth Burkey, Will Morrison Burkey, Makenna Wilson Burkey, Jonathan Thomas Gattuso, Rose Tyler Kunkes, and River Song Kunkes; and great-great granddaughter: Hadleigh Grace Miller. She was preceded in death by her parents; 7 brothers and 3 sisters; and sons-in-law: Bill Dickey and Leroy Argo.
A graveside service for Betty will be held at 2:00pm on Monday, October 5, 2020 in the Mt. Zion Lutheran Cemetery outside of Nokomis with Rev. Kristine Kay Kline-Pugh, 70 of Stonington, passed away at 5:57pm on Monday, September 28, 2020 at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield.  She was born on June 8, 1950 in Decatur, the daughter of Fred Orville and Darlin Estella Marie (Kramer) Kline.  Kristine worked in central supply at Taylorville Memorial Hospital for 17 years.  She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.  She married Randy Pugh on May 4, 2010 in Stonington.  Kristine enjoyed genealogy.  
She is survived by her husband: Randy of Stonington; daughters: Angie, Naomi, Kenna, Amanda, and Lorinda; sons: Aaron, Abe, Zach, and Randy; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren; brother: Rick Kline; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.  She was preceded in death by her parents; and daughters: Lisa and Renae.

Gary Lee Dodson, 63, loving son, father, grandfather, brother, and friend passed away early Wednesday, September 30, 2020 at Springfield Memorial Hospital due to complications from the coronavirus and other health issues. Youngest of three children, Gary was born on February 13, 1957 to the parents of Byron and Wanda (Hill) Dodson of Owaneco, IL. Gary spent most of his life in Owaneco, spending his time with his family and daughter’s BreAnne (True) and Ashley (May), camping and fishing at Lake Taylorville, listening to rock and roll on his record player, watching St. Louis Cardinals baseball, and reminiscing at the annual family reunions. Gary was a member of the Owaneco United Methodist Church. When Gary was younger, he was a Cub Scout, delivered newspapers for the Breeze Courier, and enjoyed participating in sports. As a young adult, Gary liked riding his motorcycle, going to lake parties, and hanging out with his friends. Gary started working for Longden’s Welding as a welder in high school and later worked in the press room at the Breeze Courier, before becoming disabled. In 1978, he married Pamela Longden of Owaneco. Together, they had two daughters, BreAnne (Jeremiah) True and Ashley (Aaron) May, both of Taylorville. Gary is the proud Grandfather of six; Halle, Payton, Jackson, and Wyatt True and Ava Zeitler and Brooks May. He was always so excited to see his grandchildren dressed up in their Halloween costumes waiting for their own family sized bag of candy he was giving out. There wasn’t a time that he wasn’t making you laugh with tears from his contagious snorting cackle with a silly joke or acting mischievous. He is survived by his brother, Byron David Dodson of Owaneco, his daughters; BreAnne (Jeremiah) True and Ashley (Aaron) May, his grandchildren; Halle, Payton, Jackson and Wyatt True and Ava Zeitler and Brooks May, all of Taylorville, in addition to several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Byron and Wanda Dodson and his sister, Shirley (Dodson) Best. The family extends their heartfelt thanks to all those who gave their comfort and support and reached out with kind words, warm gestures, and constant prayers. You have our eternal gratitude. 

The funeral service for Gary will be held at 11:00am on Saturday, October 3, 2020 at McClure Funeral Home with Rev.
