Melissa Jean Jones, 68, of Taylorville, died at home at 4:45 p.m. on Thursday, October 28, 2021, surrounded by her loving family. Born in Taylorville on April 6, 1953, Melissa was the daughter of Charles and Magel (Weeden) Pearson. She married Jimmy Ray Jones in Edinburg on June 9, 1973, and they shared 48 beautiful years together. After having her two daughters in the late 1970s, Melissa was a homemaker for several years before working as the secretary at West Elementary School. After that, she worked as a medical transcriptionist for 25 years before fulfilling her lifelong dream of becoming a nurse. At age 51, she became an RN and spent the rest of her career at Heritage Manor in Pana, working in numerous roles including Director of Nursing.  

In addition to her vocation of healing, Melissa was a talented seamstress, from making matching dresses for her girls when they were young to serving as the costume mistress for the Taylorville High School Madrigal Singers. She had numerous other hobbies that included canning, soap making, knitting and crochet, and – most importantly – music. She taught piano lessons and accompanied her daughters’ performances for many years. Later in life, she joined her mother and sisters in a ukulele group that brought the joy of music to nursing homes and other venues throughout the area.  

She was a member of the Way of Life Church in Taylorville for more than 40 years, where she served in numerous capacities, including leading the youth group and playing and singing on the worship team. Melissa was also active on the local National Day of Prayer Committee. 

Along with her husband, Melissa is survived by her daughters: Rachel (Jason) Robison of Arnold, Missouri; Rebekah (Mike) Berger of Taylorville; mother: Magel Pearson of Taylorville; grandchildren: Anthony Berger, John (Emily) Berger, Sarah Berger, Elijah Berger, Hannah Berger, William Berger; siblings: Larry (Julie) Pearson of Taylorville; Mariann (Virgil) Morthland of Moweaqua; Jane (Vincent) Kodatt of Auburn; Joan (Chris) Blood of Viburnum, MO; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and countless friends. She was preceded in death by her father and one sister: Becky Hardas. 

Funeral service for Melissa will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, November 2, 2021, at Way of Life Church, 1929 W Spresser St., Taylorville, with Pastor Stan Pratt officiating. Interment will follow at Walnut Hill Cemetery in rural Sharpsburg. Visitation will be held Monday from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at McClure Funeral Home. Rose M. Hughes 83, of Palmer passed away on Wednesday, October 27, 2021 in her home surrounded by her family. Rose was born on October 25, 1938 to John and Loretta (Rogerson) Teimeyer in Springfield, IL. She married Emery Curtis Hughes on January 1, 1959 in Missouri. Rose was a wife, mother, and homemaker. Rose became a widow in 1979 due to a tragic accident. She worked at Taylorville Care Center for many years where she loved the people. Rose later accepted a respite position with CCMHA in the silla homes, which she held until she was forced to retire due to breast cancer in May of 1991. After going into remission, she enjoyed life as a mother and grandmother. Rose was very active in the community helping with funeral dinners for local families and doing social events throughout the community which she enjoyed very much

She is survived by her sister: Patricia Robertson of Tallahasse, FL; daughters: Mary Jane Hughes (Janie) (Mike Nation) of Palmer, Janet Estes and Patricia Delahunt of Taylorville; grandchildren: Shannon (Steve) Sheedy, Amber (Troy) Fleigle, and Jennifer (Chris) Gordon, James Lunsford, and Jessica (Justin) Durbin, Casandra (Wes) Withrow all of Taylorville; Tammy (David) Tomlin of Decatur, Steven Hughes of Japan, Jason (Shelly) Hughes of Witt; 18 great -grandchildren; 9 great-great-grandchildren along with several nieces and nephews and extended family. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, 2 brothers, 3 sons and a granddaughter. 

Visitation will be held on Monday, November 1, 2021 from 12:00-2:00 p.m. at Sutton Memorial Home in Taylorville. Funeral service will be held immediately following the visitation starting at 2:00 p.m. at Sutton Memorial Home in Taylorville with pastor Chad Foster officiating.

Mr. Taylor Ryan William Lindsay, 26, of Kincaid, IL passed from this life at 4:13 a.m. Friday, October 22, 2021 in Decatur, IL

He was born in Springfield, IL January 16, 1995 the son of P. Douglas Trask and Jennifer (Lindsay) Nance.  

Taylor enjoyed gambling, video games, watching sports, and spending time with his family.  He was a huge fan of the L.A. Dodgers, Kentucky Wildcats, and Chicago Bears.

Surviving are: his loving companion Chelsey Las of Kincaid, IL a daughter Charleigh Lindsay at home, his mother Jennifer Nance companion Rick Fassero of Kincaid, IL his father P. Douglas Trask of Springfield, IL his step father Derrick Nance and companion Dawn King-Smith of Jacksonville, IL a sister Jade Nance and a brother Carter Nance both of Kincaid, IL maternal grandparents Don Lindsey of Springfield IL and Joe & Donna Taylor of GA., paternal grandparents Pete Trask and Laura Brunk both of Springfield, IL along with many aunts, uncles, cousins and a great many friends.  Taylor considered all of his friends as his family, especially his lifelong buddies Josh Martin and Kyle Koehne.  

He was preceded in death by a maternal grandmother Vicki Lindsay.

Visitation for Mr. Taylor Lindsay will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, October 26, 2021 at Masterson Funeral Home in Kincaid, IL.  Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, October 27 also at Masterson’s in Kincaid with Pastor Greg Busboom officiating.  Sports attire, namely Dodgers, KY Wildcats, or Bears is suggested.     

Shelli Renee Scott, age 50, passed away on Wednesday, October 20, 2021 at her home surrounded by her loving family. She showed tremendous grace and strength through her Bulbar ALS Diagnosis. Her faith in the Lord sustained her and she is now at home with Him. Shelli was born on February 18, 1971 to Ronald and Carolyn (Eilers) Jackson in Taylorville, IL. 

She graduated from Taylorville High School in 1989, then from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, earning a B.S degree. She later continued her education at Lincoln Land where she earned her LPN and RN. Then she achieved her BSN from Benedictine. Shelli was a devoted nurse and found her true calling as a hospice nurse where she was loved by all of the families for whom she provided care. She was known for being compassionate and always focused on the care of her patients. She found such joy in this role.

She was an active member of Calvary Baptist Church in Taylorville and looked forward to opportunities to attend and serve. She and Doug both grew close with their Life Group, sharing life’s joys and struggles together. She also looked forward to getting together with her weekly bible study group.

Shelli is survived by her devoted husband, Doug. Her sons Garrett (Madison) Scott and Dylan (Sydney) Scott, both of Taylorville. Her father Ronald Jackson of Owaneco and Sister: Jennifer (Eric) Bertoldo of Owaneco, IL. She was preceded in death by her mother Carolyn Jackson. 

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 27, 2021 from 4:00-7:00 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church in Taylorville. Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, October 28, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. at Calvary Baptist Church in Taylorville, IL. Burial will be in Buckeye Prairie Cemetery in rural Owaneco, IL.

Denny Joe Macke, 75 of Taylorville passed away on Tuesday, October 19, 2021 at 12:09 p.m. at Decatur Memorial Hospital in Decatur, IL. He was born on April 29, 1946 in Marshall, IL the son of Herschel and Irene (Newman) Macke. He married Karen Mae Morgan on March 25, 1965 in Marshall, IL. Denny was a Veteran of United States Navy during Vietnam aboard the USS Ticonderoga aircraft carrier. After his discharge he was a member of the Air National Guard and the Seabees. He was also the Street and Sewer Superintendent for the City of Taylorville. Denny was a member of Way of Life Church, VFW Post #4495 and the NRA.

He is survived by his Wife: Karen Macke of Taylorville, IL; Daughter: Annette (Dave) Booth of Springfield, IL; Son: Terry (Laura) Macke of Taylorville, IL; Grandchildren: T.J. Joyce Ann Jett, 78 of Taylorville, passed away at 11:38a.m. on Wednesday, October 20, 2021 surrounded by her family in her daughter’s home.  She was born on November 8, 1942 in Jeisyville, the daughter of John Joseph and Mildred Myrtle (Banfield) Fecho.  She married Clyde R. Jett Sr. on June 27, 1965 in Taylorville and he preceded her in death on July 21, 1994.  

She graduated from South Fork High School in 1960 and worked for 21 years at Liberty Mutual Insurance as an auto rater, retiring in 1999.  Joyce loved spending time in the outdoors.  She loved fishing, hunting, gardening, mowing, and sitting around the campfire.  In recent years she enjoyed taking golf cart rides with her family, looking for deer.  She enjoyed all types of crafts, especially flower arranging.  Joyce was a caring person and was devoted to her family, especially her granddaughters.  She was an animal lover and had many special pets throughout the years.  

She is survived by her daughter: Tanya Jett of Taylorville; granddaughters: Kendall Manney (Thomas) of Ft. Wayne, Indiana, and Sierra Beck of Taylorville; siblings: Jim Fecho (Kathy) of Mount Ida, Arkansas, Doris Rhodes of Effingham, and Sharon Moore of Taylorville; several nieces and nephews; and special dog: Missy. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son: Clyde R. Jett Jr.; siblings: Joe Fecho, Johnny Fecho, and Denny Fecho; mother-in-law and father-in-law: Helen and Guy Jett; brother-in-law: Rocky Moore; and special dog: Bella.

The funeral service for Joyce will take place at 2:00p.m. on Sunday, October 24, 2021 at McClure Funeral Home in Taylorville with Rev. Ricky Reed officiating.  Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service on Sunday.  Following the services, Joyce will be cremated, and inurnment will take place at a later date in Oak Hill Cemetery.

Mary Laukaitis, 74, of Pana passed away Monday, October 18, 2021 in St. John’s Hospital, Springfield. She was born April 5, 1947 in Pana to the late Alex & Marie (Ladow) Rochkes. Mary married Johnnie Laukaitis on November 11, 1967 in St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Pana and he survives.
Mary was a graduate of Pana High School, Class of 1965 and was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Pana. She was a homemaker until her children were grown and then she worked as a dental assistant. Mary was always put together, looking her best, and she never knew a stranger. In her free time, she enjoyed cooking & planting flowers. She was also very crafty and enjoyed sewing & quilting. Mary loved to shop, always looking for a bargain. She never missed a road trip to the casino or the chance to go out to eat. Mary’s greatest joy was raising her children and spending time with her grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, Mary is survived by her children: Brian (Christine) Laukaitis, Springfield, IL; Lisa Dagen, Pana, IL and Jennifer (Curtis) Kessler, Virden, IL; grandchildren: Alexanne Dagen, Evan Kessler & Ryan Kessler and her dog, Penny. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Francis “Butch” Rochkes.

Byron William Winn, 88 of Stonington passed away on Saturday, October 16, 2021 at 1:15 p.m. at Springfield Memorial Hospital in Springfield, IL. He was born on January 16, 1933 in Odell, IL the son of Glenn E. and Betty M. (Cagley) Winn. He married Nancy Campbell on April 9, 1954 in in the First Baptist Church Parsonage in Taylorville, IL. He worked at the Mueller Company in Decatur in Decatur for 45 years and 11 months. He served in the United Sates Navy, (shellback), stationed out of Yorktown Virginia and was on the USS Lake Champlain aircraft carrier as a gunner’s mate during the Korean Conflict. Byron spent most of his life in Stonington, where he grew up, built his home, and raised his family. For many years he enjoyed the food and fellowship at the Country Kitchen in Taylorville and he was a loyal fan of the St. Louis Cardinals. He will be deeply missed by all.

He is survived by his Wife: Nancy Winn of Stonington, IL; Daughter: Terry Lee (David) Myers of Taylorville, IL; Son: Allen Clay (Nancy) Winn of Augusta, GA; Grandchildren: Matthew Winn, Troy Sleeth, Brittany (Corey) Toomey, Paige Myers, Brooke Myers; Great-Grandchildren: Zoey Scoles, Emily White, Hannah Winn, Christian White, Payton White, Beibhinn Winn, Harper Myers-Krueger and Nephew: David Winn. Jon Riley, 66, from Taylorville, IL was called home to his Lord on, Friday, Oct. 8 at 9:38pm in Health First Viera Hospital in Melbourne, FL where he was visiting Jon and Sabrina Riley with the birth of his first grandchild, Voyager. Jon was born Sept. 13,1955 in Houston, TX. He graduated from Big Spring High school, class of 1974. Later, he studied engineering/computer science at Texas Tech University in 1975. He then transferred to computer information systems at West Texas A & M University graduating in December of 1979 with a bachelors in computer programing & business administration. He married Lea on Nov. 29th, 1985. They had two children and then divorced several years later. Jon enjoyed table tennis, chess, solar pannels, geodesic domes, singing in the church choir, and frequenting the local mexican restaurants.

He is survived by his son, Jon Riley and his wife Sabrina Riley of Cocoa, FL; and daughter Sara Cearlock and her husband Joe Cearlock of Taylorville, IL: His four sisters, Rhonda Fiot of Houston, TX; Lisa Muncy and her husband Jim Muncy of Peoria, IL; Roanne DeSonier and her husband David DeSonier of Joplin, MO; and Karen Burleson of Joplin, MO; a grandchild Voyager Riley of Cocoa, FL: several nephews and nieces, Marc Fiot of Grand Juction, CO; Joshua DeSonier of Bentonville, AR; Michael DeSonier of Aurora, CO; Christie Hager of La Porte, TX; Alonzo Muncy of Waco, TX; Alice Muncy of Waco, TX; Allen Muncy of New York City, NY; Alaina Muncy of Nashville, TN; Marianne Burleson of Joplin, MO; Frances Burleson of Las Vegas, NV; James Allen Burleson of Joplin, MO. His remains may be spread along the continental divide trail area. Jon had wanted to hike it this year.

She was born on July 30, 1963 in Taylorville, IL the daughter of James and Rochelle (Elston) Black. She married Dan Hill and he preceded her in death. She was a social member of the Taylorville American Legion and she loved her dog Dreyfus and cat Cinco. She loved plants and she loved to spend time with friends. She was very outgoing and loved life.

She is survived by her daughter: Trista (Dan) Norris of Mt. Auburn, IL; granddaughter: Arianna Norris of Mt. Theresa A. Brown, 66 of Kincaid passed away on Friday, October 15, 2021 at 7:01 a.m. at her home in Kincaid, IL. She was born on January 23, 1955 in Taylorville, IL the daughter of James and Marlene (Mills) Brown. Theresa worked as the shift manager at KFC in Taylorville. She loved playing bingo, being around family and traveling. Theresa especially loved to go to her sisters houses and cook Thanksgiving dinner and Christmas dinner.

Betty Burton, 97 of Stonington passed away on Thursday, October 14, 2021 at 12:48 p.m. at Decatur Memorial Hospital in Decatur, IL. She was born on July 20, 1924 in Stonington, IL the daughter of John and Susie (Galbraith) Davis. She married Carl Burton on October 31, 1946 in Stonington, IL and he preceded her in death on December 17, 2010. She worked at the Illiopolis Ammunition Plant During WWII and then later was a homemaker. Betty was a member of the Stonington United Methodist Church in Stonington, IL.

Terry William Young, 74 of Taylorville passed away on Friday, October 15, 2021 at 1:13 p.m. at Taylorville Memorial Hospital in Taylorville, IL. He was born on February 23, 1947 in Taylorville, IL the son of Elvin “Bill” and Lillian (Wilson) Young. Terry Graduated Taylorville High School in the class of 1965. He loved Antiquing, animals and the Cubs.

He is survived by his aunts: Joann Bassana of Taylorville, IL, Barbara (Bill) Radzimanowski of Taylorville and several cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents: John and Anna Wilson and Uncle: Chester Bassana.

It was Terry’s wishes to be cremated and have no services. His remains will be buried with his parents at Oak Hill Cemetery in Taylorville at a later date.

Dwight Carl Williams, 39 of Taylorville passed away on Tuesday, October 5, 2021 at 10:25 a.m. at his home in Taylorville, IL. He was born on June 1, 1982 in Springfield, IL the son of Donald Ross and Jessie Marie (Anderson) Williams.

Daniel Sims, 72 of Edinburg passed away on Sunday, October 10, 2021 at 5:00 p.m. at his home in Edinburg surrounded by loved ones. He was born on February 16, 1949 in Shelbyville, IL the son of William Thomas and Geneva Mary (Smith) Sims. He married Nancy Cline on June 22, 1968 in Taylorville, IL. He worked as a sheet metal worker for the Union Local #218 in Springfield. He was a Veteran of the United State Army during Vietnam, he was a member of the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter #0534 of Springfield, IL, NRA, American Legion Post #0257, DAV Chapter #15, VFW Membership at large. Daniel enjoyed traveling, telling a good joke and visiting with family. He loved sharing nose kisses and knuckle sandwiches with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He had many special animals.

He is survived by his Wife: Nancy Sims of Edinburg, IL; Daughter: Michella Gibbons of Wyoming, MI; Son: Charles Patrick ”CP” (Jackie) Sims of Springfield, IL; Grandchildren: Bryan (Nicole) Brown of Hawaii, Sean and Connor Gibbons of Michigan, Heather (Devon) Wicker of Taylorville, IL; Daniel Thomas Sims of Taylorville; Great-Grandchildren: Brantley, Braden, Liam, Luna, Charlotte “Charlie”; Sister: Pug (Leland) Graven of Findlay, IL; Brother: Jessie (Frances) Sims of Hilliard, FL; several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ten sisters, three brothers, several nieces and nephews.

Hal Alexander, Christian County’s longest-serving Public Defender, died at home on Oct. 9, 2021. At age 78, the retired attorney passed in the arms of his family and in the company of thousands of books that journeyed with him from boyhood to old age. Around the time of his last birthday on May 8, Hal had confronted an alarming death warrant: Stage 4 lung cancer with a cruel cut-off of three to six months. A stroke, undiagnosed until then, robbed his six-foot frame of mobility.

Born at St. Vincent Hospital, Hal was the son of plumbing shop owner Lorne W. Alexander and Othelle Nutt Alexander, a country school teacher (both deceased). Evoking an ocean boardwalk, a newly-built wooden ramp helped ferry Hal to medical appointments and offered a welcome mat. Invariably, visitors reprised often hilarious uncensored anecdotes from school days to courtrooms to watering holes to his home-cooked gourmet meals. Tears splashed as memories accidentally coalesced around “his quiet deeds,” often targeting people with few or even no options.

“You have always reminded me of my Dad,” a sympathetic visitor said, as Hal puffed on an unfiltered Camel cigarette during the early days of hospice care. “You are a champion for the underdog.”

His two decades (1988-2008) as a court-appointed lawyer for impoverished criminal defendants seemed an unlikely calling for a former frat boy. Especially one who drove a mile-long red Pontiac convertible to the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign. After two years of top grades, he quit going to class without saying goodbye, wed a drop-out, became a father and divorced. In a letter to his distraught parents, who had high hopes for their only child (an academic star in the Class of 1960 at Taylorville High School), Hal confessed: “I was 22 years old, out-of-work, out-of-school and dependent on you for money.”

A prior summer job at the hometown Breeze-Courier newspaper, where he was mentored by journalism icon James Frank Cooper, emboldened Hal to apply for work at the News-Gazette in Champaign in 1964. “I had no degree, nothing but guts,” he told his parents. Within a year, he was covering City Hall, the best beat. Next, the rival Courier in Urbana, recruited him, offering the top beat and top dollar. A short time later, a headline on the Society page announced “Courier Writers to Marry.” A second marriage to feature writer Carol Mekshes was followed by Hal’s vow to finally earn a college degree. When the U of I spurned him, he enrolled at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale. He made history in the history department when he was hired as a teaching assistant in his senior year. (The coveted posts were reserved for graduate students). His last academic stop was the Washington University School of Law in St. Louis.

Hal’s life unspooled these past months of confinement through the lives of others:

“If you hadn’t pushed or shoved me out of Taylorville, I would be a file clerk instead of a community college graduate who worked with former U. S. Sen. Claire McCaskill of Missouri.”

“As a pregnant single girl, I was afraid to ask my Dad, So I asked you to co-sign a loan for my first car and you did.”

“You tutored me in the law every Thursday afternoon while the other lawyers played golf.”

“Everyone should have an uncle who can teach them how to play poker, drink Budweiser and smoke Camel non-filter cigarettes! When you spoke with me and spent time with me, I thought. ‘This is what it must be like to have a father at home.’”

“You are the most brilliant man I have ever known. You will always have a special place in our hearts.”

“Do you remember seeing a man’s suit hanging in Hal’s office? It was from the Salvation Army thrift store and was loaned to defendants whose jeans and tank tops wouldn’t cut it in court.”

“I will miss that deep comforting voice that carried me and many struggling souls through tough times.”

In the end, Hal’s “voice of God,” as rival lawyers called it, was the last to go. He thought he was immune to lung cancer. Hadn’t x-rays and scans for pneumonia a year ago looked as if he were home free, despite a two-pack a day dependency?

The assassin inside him was unforgiving. Massacre is not too strong a word for the death of Hal Alexander. “He was always his own man … doing what he wanted,” a visitor said in search of logic.

Survivors are wife Carol; daughter Krista Bowers, grandchildren Max and Phoebe and former son-in-law Gregory Bowers, all of Los Angeles. Hal wanted to forego a funeral service. It was Hal’s wish to be cremated, with ashes deposited in a St. Louis Cardinals-theme urn. His cremains will be buried in the Alexander family plot at Oak Hill Cemetery. Jack Snow, 5 of Chester, IL passed away on Friday, October 8, 2021 at 3:34 p.m. at his home in Chester, IL. He was born on April 16, 2016 in Greenville, IL the son of John Snow and Robyn (Mines) Ferrell. Jack was a super hero loving kid who also enjoyed fishing, swimming, going to the park and playing with his siblings. Jack had an undeniable sweet tooth, especially for chocolate and unlike many 5 year old’s, he was an early riser. His bright blue eyes and bear hugs will be missed by his family and friends.

He is survived by his Parents: John (fiancée Angela Durham) Snow of Alhambra, IL and Robyn Ferrell of Chester, IL; Sister: Grace Snow of Chester; Brother: Jonny Snow of Chester; Grandparents: Ken Snow of Taylorville, Arline Snow of Oconee, IL, Linda Mines of Sparta, IL; Aunts: Deborah Short of Taylorville, IL; Lisa (husband Conrad) Butzer of Springboro, OH; Tina Rice of Sarasota, FL, several cousins and a Great Grandfather: John Richard Gee. Marva C. Harris, 79 of Taylorville passed away on Friday, October 8, 2021 at 6:02 p.m. at Taylorville Memorial Hospital in Taylorville, IL. She was born on April 16, 1942 in Richland, MO the daughter of Gordon Kendrick and Essie Lea (Holder) Williams. She married Dallas Steve Harris Sr. in 1959 in Kincaid, IL and he preceded her in death on July 24, 2006. She worked as Sangamon Card Company and later an associate at Walmart.

She is survived by her sons: Dallas Steve (Nancy) Harris of Gillespie, IL; Mark Lawrence (Sharon) Harris of Taylorville, IL; Grandchildren: Jessica Carney of Gillespie, IL, John Franklin (Ashley) Harris of Springfield, IL, Meghan (Chris) Dubois of Colorado Springs, CO, Katelyn (Cole) Bethard and Ali Harris both of Morrisonville, IL; Great-Grandchildren: Austin Carney, Brianna Carney, Zachary Carney, Tyler Carney, Raine Harris, Connor Lopez and Quinn Dubois; Brothers: Charles Morris (Nancy) Williams of Eldon, MO, Marvin “Ed” (Jan) Williams of Ashland, IL; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Randy A. Meyer, 56 of rural Witt, IL passed away on Friday, October 8, 2021 after a valiant effort against a very rare and aggressive meloma cancer. Randy was born on October 27, 1964 in Salem, IL to Donald and Mildred (Burge) Meyer. He graduated from Kinmundy-Alma High School and then LakeLand Community College and SIU Carbondale with Bachelors and Master’s degrees in Ag Education. Randy taught Agriculture and VoAg for 33 years at Nokomis High School until his retirement in 2020. Randy was a caring teacher no matter what type of class, always encouraging students to do their best. Students often remarked they would never forget his classes. He was a passionate FFA advisor guiding many students to the success at Chapter, Section, District, State and National levels. He served the FFA in numerous ways and received several advisor and teaching awards in his career. Randy’s influence extended to fellow teachers throughout the state. Randy loved all things farming. He not only worked full time but farmed where he lived in rural Witt and where he grew up in Alma. His ability to see a problem and follow through fixing it was second to none. He enjoyed going to cattle sales and shows and traveled many miles with a trailer. His influence with young people and all the support and help for others will be greatly missed by his family and many others in multiple ways.

Randy leaves his wife Joan (Ruppert) who he married in 1993. His children from his first marriage Kristopher (Carol) Meyer of Salem and Abbey (Landon) Tate of rural Texico and Joan’s children Chad (Andrea) Ruppert of Witt, Beth (Brad) Dorsey of Moro, Norann Ruppert of Nokomis and Jordan (Randee) Ruppert of Witt. Grandchildren Brooks Moreland, Dominic and Darian Ruppert, Drew DeClerck, Claire and Jemma Dorsey, Laurel Forrester, Jocelyn and Paislee Rupert and Rylee and Kynlee Neff. Brothers Roger (Renae) Meyer and Richard Meyer of Alma. Several nieces, nephews and in-laws. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Ron and infant sister Rhonda.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, October 12, 2021 from 4:00-8:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Nokomis. Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, October 13, 2021 starting at 2:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Nokomis. Burial will be in Nokomis Cemetery in Nokomis, IL. The family asks that all former FFA members that have their jackets to wear or bring them.

Madeline Rose Wilson-Eson, 91 of Taylorville passed away on Saturday, October 2, 2021 at 8:15 a.m. at Taylorville Care Center in Taylorville, IL. She was born on July 27, 1930 in East Peoria, IL the daughter of Abe and Thelma (Rine) Wilson. She married Laverne “Soapy” Eson on January 16, 1949 in Taylorville, IL and he preceded her in death on January 31, 2018. She retired as a cook in the Cafeteria at the Taylorville Junior High School. Madeline was a member of the VFW Post #4495 ladies Auxiliary and the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary. She was loved by many and she took care of her family.

She is survived by her daughters: Deborah (Jack) Ryan of Kincaid, IL; Cinda Eson of Plymouth, MN; Granddaughter: Shauna Konecny of Minneapolis, MN; Sister: Beverly Susing of Jerseyville, IL and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and 2 brothers: Robert and Richard.

Graveside services will be held on Wednesday October 13, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. at Oak Hill Cemetery in Taylorville with Pastor Tiney Walker and Father Tony officiating.

Ruth A. “Nana” Bower, of Taylorville, passed away on October 3, 2021 in Springfield.

Ruth was born on September 11, 1932 to Howard D. and Armeada M. (Roach) Birdsell in Jacksonville. She moved to Taylorville with her family while in 3^rd grade. She attended the Taylorville schools, graduating from Taylorville High School with the class of 1951. She married Leo T. Swiney on December 1, 1951. They had three children and later divorced. On November 29, 1975 she married, “The Love of Her Life”, William H. “Bill” Bower in Frankfort, IN. Bill passed away in Frankfort, IN on June 4, 1994.

Ruth moved back to Taylorville in 1998 to be closer to her family. She was employed by the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture – Christian Co. ASCS in Taylorville for 24 years, and with Clinton County Bank & Trust Co. in Frankfort, IN for 14 years. Ruth always felt very fortunate to have held two different careers in public service of which she enjoyed to the fullest. She thought she was so fortunate to have been able to serve so many wonderful people and make so many new friends in these two positions.

Ruth was an active member of Taylorville First United Methodist Church, serving as Chairperson on many committees, the President-Coordinator for Ansarettes (a Shrine widow’s organization), and delighted in reuniting the THS Class of 1951 with a tri-monthly newsletter along with bi-monthly class luncheons and many class reunions.

Ruth had a very blessed life with Bill, with their strong support of Purdue University, as well as traveling with the Purdue basketball teams. They also worked together at the Indiana 500 races, and the Indianapolis Colts football games, as well as being a very loving Nana and Grandpa Bill to their grandchildren.

She had many interests in life which included, reading, sewing, various crafts, floral arranging, working in her yard, and watching hummingbirds and butterflies. Ruth delighted in assisting or volunteering often, wherever she felt needed with her church and many friends. She enjoyed sending and receiving, by mail, many cards, notes, and letters. Ruth believed and reminded many that age is a figure only, and not something that has to define life as it was given us to enjoy, as well as help others not so fortunate. She believed in the following: “Enjoy each day life gives you, it may be your last” and “Loving Memories are Forever.”

Ruth is survived by her daughter, Diane G. Swiney-Lewis of Taylorville; sons, Steven T. (Angie) Swiney of Woodstock, and Randale N. Swiney of Hayden, ID; granddaughters, Courtney L. (Adam Turner) Lewis of Modesto, Shaunessy D. Lewis of Springfield, and Megan R. Lewis of Virden; grandson, Zackery W. Swiney of Taylorville; great granddaughters, Antonio E. Turner, Delaney J. Turner, both of Modesto, Daivany D. Hogan of Virden, and Mikaela D. Swiney of Taylorville; great grandsons, Jayden D. Turner of Modesto, and Zackery H. Swiney and Liam Swiney, both of Taylorville; Sister-in-law, Sandy Fabbri-Birdsell of Springfield; along with several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bill; brother, Cullen E. Birdsell; and extra special aunts, Lula Souza Duerst, Cordelia Birdsell, and Irene Hopper.

In accordance with Ruth’s wishes, private funeral ceremonies were held.

Orren “Rich” Wilson, 84 of Taylorville passed away on Tuesday, October 5, 2021 at 7:43 a.m. at Taylorville Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Taylorville, IL. He was born on May 16, 1937 in Taylorville, IL the son of Stuart R. and Verna (Deal) Wilson. He married Emma Livingston-Wilson on December 15, 2000 in Taylorville, IL. He retired from the State of Illinois and farmed for many years. Rich was a member of the Morrisonville United Methodist Church, Taylorville United Methodist Church, Morrisonville Masonic Lodge #681 AF & AM, the Christian County Shrine Club and the NRA.

William Henry Hausman, 75 of Taylorville formerly of Alton, IL passed away on Monday, October 4, 2021 at 7:38 p.m. at Springfield Memorial Hospital in Springfield, IL. He was born on December 18, 1946 in Alton, IL the son of Frederick R. and Edith B. (Bennett) Hausman.

He is survived by five daughters, one son, sister: Daisy Jackson of Wilsonville, IL; brothers: John Hausman of Brighton, IL and Robert Hausman of Bunker Hill, IL. Several grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother: Fred Hausman and sister: Ruthann Ussery.

Jo Ann Dobyns, 75 of Taylorville passed away on Sunday, October 4, 2021 at 7:33 p.m. at Taylorville Memorial Hospital in Taylorville, IL. She was born on June 6, 1946 in Taylorville, IL the daughter of Earl and Ivadel (Stahr) Austin. She married Jerry Dobyns in 1972 in Taylorville, IL.

She is survived by her daughter: Rhonda (Rick) Ondrey of Taylorville, IL sons: Rex (Terri) Rickman, Jerry (Wendy) Dobyns, and Jeff Jones all of Taylorville, IL; grandchildren: Luke, Corey, Zack, Tiffany, Colton, Brett, and William Rickman, Nikki and Timmy Jones, Austin and Jakob Dobyns, Heather Dobyns, Angie Rogers; twenty-three great-grandchildren; sisters: Norma (Gene) Anderson and Vicky Austin of Taylorville, IL; Several Nieces, Nephews and Cousins. Richard Joseph “Sarge” Luczak, 87, of Taylorville, formerly of Morrisonville, passed away on Friday, October 1, 2021 at Taylorville Care Center.

Richard was born July 4, 1934 in Chicago, the son of Edward J. and Wilhelmene (Woods) Luczak.  He married Lorraine Stripeik on April 30, 1960 in Stickney (now Burbank).  She preceded him in death on March 5, 2021.

Upon graduating from high school in Chicago, Richard proudly served our country in the United States Army during the Korean War.  After his honorable discharge, he went on to a career in the Illinois State Police, retiring in 1984 as a Special Agent with Division of Criminal Investigation.  During his retirement, Richard and Lorraine owned and operated, Sarge’s Country Pub & Eatery in Morrisonville for 11 years. After selling the pub, he worked many more years for Bob Ridings Ford in Taylorville.  Richard was a longtime member of St. Maurice Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus #1151, American Legion Post #721, Nokomis Masonic Lodge #0456, and the Fraternal Order of Police Trooper’s Lodge #41.

He was also preceded in death by his parents; son, Rick Luczak; and daughter, Michelle Fuchs.

Richard is survived by his daughter, Carmen Luczak of Raymond; sons, Louie (wife, Shirl) of Florence, OR, Tom (wife, Laurie) of Aiea, HI, and Pete Luczak of Springfield; son-in-law, Richard Fuchs of O’Fallon, IL; 4 grandchildren; 2 step-grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; sister, Barbara (husband, Bob) Connors of Tinley Park; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation & Funeral Mass: The family will receive guests from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the funeral mass at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 7, 2021 at St. Maurice Catholic Church, 706 SE 4th Street, Morrisonville, IL 62546, with Rev. John Burnette as celebrant.

Inurnment will follow the mass at St. Maurice Catholic Cemetery in Morrisonville.

Richard Lee Wilson, 88 of Edinburg, passed away at 1:30pm on Thursday, September 30, 2021 at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield. He was born on July 22, 1933 in Mt. Sterling, the son of Charles W. and Wilda S. (McConnell). He married Phyllis J. Mellon on February 2, 1956 in Barry and she preceded him in death on December 4, 2020. Richard proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. Following his time in the service, Richard went to work for the Dictaphone Corporation in Springfield. He spent his entire career with the company, retiring as a district service manager. He was extremely dedicated to his work and formed many close bonds with his coworkers. Richard always had a love of aviation. When he was younger, he obtained his pilot’s license and later in life loved attending air shows. He also had several special dogs throughout the years that were very special to him.

He is survived by his children: Marsha Turner (Steve) of Weatherford, Texas, Mitchell Wilson, of Edinburg, and Mark Wilson (Tammy) of Stonington. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, brothers: Herbert Wilson and William Wilson.

Mr. Wilson will be cremated, and no services will be held at this time. His remains will be placed in the Edinburg Cemetery next to his wife. Catherine L. “Katie” Peat, 96, of Palmer, passed away at 4:31 p.m. on Wednesday, September 29, 2021 at Taylorville Memorial Hospital.

Katie was born March 6, 1925 in Taylorville, the daughter of Guy and Mamie (Decker) Irwin. At 9 months old, Katie’s mother died, and she was raised by her older sister, Hazel, and her husband, Joe Sincavage. She graduated from Taylorville High School in 1943, and worked for a short time at Montgomery Ward’s in Taylorville, and then for Harry Dillabaugh’s jewelry store in Morrisonville. Katie married Benjamin J. Peat, Jr. on September 24, 1948, and she worked beside him to raise their family and tend to the farming duties. He preceded her in death on May 12, 2010.

Katie was a dedicated member of the Palmer Advent Christian Church, where she was a Past President of the Women’s Home and Foreign Missions. She had a love for her community, and helped with many events, but she especially took great pride in the annual Palmer Picnic, through the Palmer Community Club. Katie was also active in the Order of the Eastern Star in Morrisonville, American Legion Auxiliary, and she served as a Den Mother for the Cub Scouts. She was feisty and determined, yet she had a wonderful sense of humor. Family was everything to Katie, and there was nothing she would rather do than spend time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; son, Stephen Peat; daughter, Carol Ann Peat; sisters, Hazel (her husband, Joe) Sincavage, and Ruby (her husband, Bill) Lawyer; and brother Ernest (his wife, Lucille) Irwin.

Katie is survived by her son, David (wife, Nancy) Peat of Paw Paw; daughters, Linda (husband, Mike) Sheedy of Morrisonville, and Janet (husband, Jim) Lane of Dade City, FL; 11 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren, and another on the way; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation & Funeral Ceremony: the family will receive friends from 10:00-12:00 p.m. on Monday, October 4, 2021 at Perfetti-Assalley Funeral Home, 304 Carlin St, Morrisonville, IL 62546. The funeral ceremony will begin at 12:00 p.m. at the funeral home with Rev. George Elder officiating.

Interment will follow the ceremony at Morrisonville Cemetery in Morrisonville.
