Kester Furgeson of Nokomis

Kester Furgeson, 49, of Nokomis, IL, passed away Monday, February 18, 2013 at 11:07 a.m. at Hillsboro Area Hospital in Hillsboro, IL. He was born May 11, 1963 in Hillsboro, IL. The Son of Harold and Leona Beacraft Furgeson. He married Tanya Britton on June 4, 1988 in Ramsey, IL.

He is survived by his Wife: Tanya; Half-Brother: Alex Smith of Taylorville, IL; Several Brothers and Sisters-in-Law Several Nieces, Nephews and Cousins. He was preceded in death by his Parents, step-mother Mary Delores Furgeson

Betty J. Wingo of Taylorville

Betty J. Wingo, 67, of Taylorville, passed away February 19, 2013 at 12:42 a.m. at the Memorial Medical Center, Springfield, IL. She was born on December 27, 1948 in Taylorville, IL, the daughter of Raymond Koonce and Josephine (Shanks) Koonce. She married James Wingo on March 11, 1965. He preceded her in death on August 3, 1974. She was a homemaker. She enjoyed doll collecting, creating photo albums, and Cook books.

She is survived by her sons, Ritch (Efe) Wingo, and Jeff Wingo of GA; daughter: Sherri (Jeff) Wingo-Durbin; grandchildren, Dani Wingo of Charleston, IL, Anthany Wingo of Charleston, IL, Grant Wingo of Mahomet, IL, Jack Wingo of Mahomet, IL, Devin Durbin of Taylorville, IL, Kyle Nation of Taylorville, IL, Alexis Nation of Taylorville, IL, and Chance Damery of Taylorville, IL ; several nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her father, mother, husband, and two brothers.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 23, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at the Sutton Memorial Home in Taylorville with Rev. Robert Russell officiating. John Michael Wayne Lofland of Decatur

John Michael Wayne Lofland, of Decatur, IL, passed away February 17, 2013 at 1:24 p.m. at Decatur Memorial Hospital, Decatur, IL. He was born February 17, 2013 in Decatur, IL. The Son of Matthew Lofland and Samantha Sunderland.

Marjorie L. Beatty of Taylorville

Marjorie L. Beatty, 97, of Taylorville, IL formerly of Decatur, IL died at 5:10 pm Wednesday, February 13, 2013 at Taylorville Care Center.

She was born July 1, 1915 in Stonington, the daughter of Albert and Alta Davis Brauer.  On September 17, 1938 she married Harold M. Beatty in Stonington.  Harold preceded her in death on December 5, 1996.  Mrs. Beatty was a member of the United Methodist Church in Decatur.  She graduated from Stonington High School and Brown’s Business College, and had been employed as an Executive Secretary.

Surviving are several nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and Brother and Sister-in-law: Lloyd “Ercel’ and Helen Brauer, and niece Margo McCarty.

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 pm Sunday, February 17 at McClure Funeral Home with Pastor Becky Lembke officiating.  Burial will be in Old Stonington Cemetery.  Visitation will be held from 1:00 pm until time of service in the funeral home on Sunday.

Teresa G. McAvoy of Taylorville

Teresa G. McAvoy, 80, of Taylorville, IL died at 4:35 am Thursday, February 14, 2013, at her home surrounded by her husband, the love of her life for 62 years, and her loving and devoted children.

She was born May 10, 1932 in Mt. Auburn, IL the daughter of John Harlan and Sophronia Lush Clark.  On June 11, 1951 she married John P. McAvoy, Sr. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Taylorville.  Teresa was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Catholic Daughters of America, and the V.F.W. Auxiliary.  Her hobbies included her family, spoiling her Grandchildren, cooking and reading.  She retired from the Christian County Sheriff’s Office in 1992 after 19 years of service.  She then went to work as a tour guide for Classic Adventure in Springfield.  It was a job she truly loved alongside her husband travelling the United States.

Surviving are her husband, John P. McAvoy, Sr. of Taylorville; Sons: John McAvoy, Jr. and wife Michele of Chatham, and Joe McAvoy of Taylorville; Daughter Jane Sim of Taylorville; 5 Grandchildren: Amy Leverenz and husband John of Divernon, Lisa Rome of Glen Carbon, Jessica McAvoy, Ashley McAvoy, and Ryan McAvoy all of Chatham; 4 Great Grandchildren: Aiden Rome of Glen Carbon, Tayler Leverenz, Hannah Leverenz, and Molly Leverenz all of Divernon. She is survived by a brother: Russell Clark of Taylorville, and sisters: Marguerite Smith and Mary Rose Kristian both of Taylorville.  Teresa was preceded in death by her parents, Brothers: Edward Clark, John Clark, and Harold Clark and sister Helena Schulte.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 pm Monday, February 18, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Father Alan Hunter officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.  Visitation will be held from 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm Sunday at McClure Funeral Home, Taylorville.

 Khristan Jade Neal, 36, Corvallis, OR. formerly of Taylorville, passed away February 12, 2013 at 3:18 p.m. at his residence in Corvallis, OR. He was born March 25, 1976 in Springfield, IL. The Son of Joe and Kathy (Tucker) Neal. He owned and operated Comprehensive Commercial Services in Corvallis, OR.

Mary Catherine (Fulfer) Kohl of Taylorville

Mary Catherine (Fulfer) Kohl, 89, of Taylorville, passed away February 11, 2013 at 8:45 a.m. at the Taylorville Care Center in Taylorville. She was born October 15, 1923 in Mt. Auburn, IL, the daughter of Quincy and Carrie (Dunn) Hohenstein. She attended Mt. Auburn High School where she was a cheerleader and her class Valedictorian. She married Virgil C. Fulfer on May 10, 1942. He preceded her in death on May 9, 1971. She then married Glenn E. Kohl on February 2, 1986 and he survives. She worked for the Secretary of State of Illinois and had also worked at Sears. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Taylorville and the White Shrine. She enjoyed her children and her grandchildren. She also enjoyed her retirement in Sun City, AZ.

She is survived by her husband, Glenn; son, David Fulfer of Dallas, TX; daughters, Judy (George) Thompson of Temecula, CA, Janet (Gary) Sockel of Omaha, NE, and Nita Norris of Omaha, NE; ten grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren; step-daughter-in-law, Patricia Kohl; several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded by her parents; first husband, Virgil; brothers, Harold, Ronald, Donald, and Dale “Shorty” Hohenstein; granddaughter, Jennifer Norris; and step-son, Ernest Kohl.

Barbara D. Voyles of Taylorville

Barbara D. Voyles, 61, of Taylorville, IL died at 1:10 am Sunday, February 10, 2013 at her residence.

She was born December 6, 1951 in Litchfield, IL the daughter of Gerald and Dena Rubinelli Handegan.  In 1972 she married Robert L. Parks, Jr. and they were later divorced.  She then married William A. Voyles on July 17, 1982 in Hillsboro, IL.  Mrs. Voyles had been an employee of Midland Community Bank.

She is survived by her husband, William A. Voyles of Taylorville, Mother, Dena Handegan of Taylorville; Daughter: Julie Young and husband Duane of Pana; Step-Son: Eric Voyles and wife Mary Ann of Litchfield; Grandchildren: Shane Voyles, Jordan Young, Tiffany Young, Brett Young, Victoria Young, and Kyle Voyles. Great Granddaughter: Adrianna Young.  Brothers and Sisters: Jerry Handegan and wife Nancy, Mary Ann Becker and husband Rodney, Kevin Handegan, and Chris Handegan all of Taylorville. 2 Sisters-in-law: Cynthia McClain of Gilman, and Candy Rand and husband Dennis of Alton. There are several Nieces and Nephews.  She was preceded in death by her father, one son, Robert L. Parks III, and grandson Devin Wayne Young.

Memorial services will be held at 6:00 pm Wednesday, February 13, 2013 at McClure Funeral Home, Taylorville with Rev. Steve Switzer officiating.  Visitation will be held from 5:00 pm until time of service.

Robert D. Opolka of Taylorville

Robert D. Opolka, 87, of Taylorville, passed away February 8, 2013 at 6:54 p.m. at Taylorville Memorial Hospital in Taylorville. He was born November 24, 1925 in Wamac, IL. The Son of Joseph Victor and Mamie Lucille Thrilkill Opolka. He married Marjorie Deatherage on July 1, 1950 in Waverly, IL. She preceded him in death on February 29, 2000. He was a Coal miner for Peabody Coal Company as a brick layer, repairman, and electrician.

He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII as a cook aboard the cargo ship USS Achernar during the invasion at Omaha Beach and later at the invasion of Okinawa. He was an avid fisherman and was an instrumental volunteer in the silt dam and fish nursery projects at Lake Taylorville, for which he was honored by Mayor Dick Adams with a Key to the City. He was a member of Taylorville Christian Church, VFW Post 4495, past board Member of Boyd Dappert youth reserve.

He is survived by his Son: Robert Joseph (Debbie) Opolka of Bremerton, WA.; Daughter: Gail (Ricky) Hoffman of Taylorville, IL; Grandchildren: Chris Opolka, Karen (Shawn) Lee, Eric Hoffman and Jody (Rob) Burtnett; Great-Grandchildren: Jordan Fields, Marissa Lee and James Burtnett; Brothers: Joseph Opolka of Bessmer, AL.; James Opolka of Azle, TX.; Girlfriend: Patricia Phillips and family of Taylorville, IL; Several Nieces, Nephews and Cousins

Anna Fern Reed of Taylorville

Anna Fern Reed, 85, of Taylorville, passed away February 8, 2013 at 3:37 p.m. at Taylorville Care Center in Taylorville. She was born May 25, 1927 in Taylorville, IL. The Daughter of Bela and Mary Durbin Durbin. She married James Belsher on February 16, 1944 in Huntsville, MO; and he preceded her and she later married Charles Reed on August 13, 1955 in Taylorville, IL and he later preceded her on April 16, 2002. She was a Housewife and Cook at Green Gables for 21 years.

She is survived by her Son: Terry Belsher and companion Evelyn Smith of Taylorville, IL; Charles (Melinda) Reed of Taylorville, IL; Jim (Mickey) Belsher of Darksville, MO.; Merle (Nell) Belsher of Moberly, MO.; Daughter: Mary Lee (Vern) Kinsel of Taylorville, IL; Twenty-Five Grandchildren; Thirty-eight Great-Grandchildren; one Great-Great Grandson; Brother: Dwight (Laverne) Durbin of Decatur, IL; Sisters: Sarah Thomas of Taylorville, IL; Lillian (Tom) Blessent of Taylorville, IL; of Taylorville, IL; Brother-in-Law: Ron Reed of Huntsville, AL.; Several Nieces, Nephews and Cousins.

Etta Mae Credi of Taylorville

Etta Mae Credi of Taylorville, IL died at 6:00 am Thursday, February 7, 2013 at her residence.

She was born December 30, 1933 in West Frankfort, IL the daughter of Carroll W. and Ethel Mae White Ford. On March 16, 1961 she married Robert Credi at St. Rita's Catholic Church in Kincaid. Etta Mae was a dedicated employee of the Illinois Department of Insurance for 59 years serving under 11 governors. She was Deputy Director of the Department and was a frequent speaker and beloved member of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners.

Etta Mae was a loving, mother and grandmother. She loved people and served as a surrogate mother to any life she touched. Etta Mae enjoyed sports at Taylorville High School and University of Illinois.

Surviving are her husband, Bob Credi of Taylorville; Children: Dr. Greg Credi and wife Allison of South Bend, IN, Mindy Credi of River Forrest, IL, Geoffery Ford Credi and Fiancee Jami Mitchell of Chicago, and Melissa Bergan and husband Bill of New Town Square, PA. There are 7 grandchildren: Zachary Credi, Madeline Credi, Kalyn Credi, Garrett Credi, Katherine "Katie" Bergan, Molly Credi, and Kyle Bergan. She is also survived by a sister, Betty Quick of Taylorville.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 am Monday, February 11, 2013 at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm Sunday at McClure Funeral Home, Taylorville.

Harriet M. Watts of Robinson

Mrs. Harriet M. Watts, age 86, of Robinson, Illinois, died Thursday February 7, 2013 at 7:10 AM at the United Methodist Village in Lawrenceville, Illinois, following a period of declining health.

Born October 31, 1926 in Robinson, Illinois, she was the daughter of Dr. Harry W. and Edith M. (Bradford) Kinney. On August 3, 1947 she married Jack J. Watts and he preceded her in death on April 29, 2006.

Harriet was a homemaker and was employed by Crawford County State Bank, Robinson, Illinois from 1944 to 1945. Her memberships include the 1st Christian Church, Robinson, Illinois; Robinson Minerva Club where she was the treasurer for several years and PEO Chapter IG. She lived in Sterling Illinois for 10 years; Urbana, Illinois for 10 years and Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina for 14 years.

Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Jack K. and Carol Watts, Robinson, Illinois; daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Dennis “D.J.” Kennedy, Taylorville, Illinois; four grandchildren, Stephen and Ashley Kennedy; Robert Kennedy; Bryan Watts; Lindsey Watts; two great-grandchildren, Lillian and Ava Kennedy; a sister and brother-in-law, Susie and Dr. John Newlin, Robinson, Illinois and several nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, Jack J. Watts on April 29, 2006; a sister, Mary Jane Richart in 1982.

Funeral service will be Monday February 11, 2013 at 10:30 AM at Pulliam Funeral Home, Robinson, Illinois with Rev. T. R. Akers officiating. Visitation will be Sunday February 10, 2013 from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM at Pulliam Funeral Home, Robinson, Illinois and Monday February 11, 2013 from 8:00 AM until time of service at 10:30 AM. Burial will be in the Hutsonville Cemetery, Hutsonville, Illinois.

Robert C. Gaither of Taylorville

Robert C. Gaither, 86, of Taylorville, IL died at 6:50 am Monday, February 4, 2013, at Taylorville Memorial Hospital.

He was born August 3, 1926 in Golden Gate, IL, the son of John William and Mary Jane Walker Gaither.  On March 23, 1950 he married Margaret Fay Weber in Fairfield, IL.  Mr.  Gaither was a member of Victory Baptist Church in Fairfield, IL, and attended First United Methodist Church in Taylorville. Mr. Gaither was an Air Force Veteran serving in World War II from June 1945 to November 1946.  He had been a teacher and principal for over 40 years. He served for over 50 years as County Counselor for Boy’s State and had a city named after him at Boy’s State. In 2008 Mr. Gaither was honored at an American Legion awards banquet held at the Governor’s Mansion in Springfield where he received the American Legion Abraham Lincoln Award and the President’s Call to Service Award for his fifty years of extraordinary and distinguished services as a volunteer and counselor. He was a member of the American Legion Post in Catlin, IL, and Boy’s State Board of Directors for Premier Boy’s State. He was a Sunday School teacher for many years.  He had over 1200 hours of volunteer service at St. Vincent Memorial Hospital, and Mary Bryant Home for the Blind in Springfield.  He enjoyed his family, his garden, working in the yard and his “grand dogs,” Bella and Sophie.

He is survived by his wife, Fay Gaither of Taylorville, Son: Mike Gaither and companion Lori Young of Springfield, Daughters: Anne Simpson and husband Bill of Taylorville, and Mary S.  Blakeman of Taylorville.  Daughter-in-law: Jan Gaither of Chatham. 4 grandchildren: Michael Gaither and wife Lauren, Naperville, IL, Cindy Gaither and companion Anne Schroer of Olathe, KS, Kris Valenti and husband Zach of Rochester, and John R. Blakeman of Taylorville.  3 Great Grandchildren: Meghan Gaither, Courtney Gaither, and Addison Gaither.  There are numerous Nieces and Nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings: Lillian Hedrick, Mary Alice Collins, Wilma Gaither, Helen Gaither, Evelyn Morell, Jean Elkins, Ross Gaither, Earl Gaither, Francis Gaither, William Gaither, and Donald Gaither.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 am Friday, February 8 at McClure Funeral Home. Burial with military honors will be held at Oak Hill Cemetery.  Visitation will be held from 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm Thursday at the funeral home.

Angel Selah Marie St. Louis, of Taylorville, passed away January 31, 2013 at 9:00 p.m. Carle Foundation Hospital in Champaign, IL. She was born January 23, 2013 in Champaign, IL. The Daughter of Michael and Teresa Sparks St. Louis. 

She is survived by her Parents: Michael and Teresa St. Louis of Taylorville, IL; Grandparents: Mel (Sandra) Hurelbrink of Taylorville, IL; Susan (Lance) Twyman of New York; Patty St. Louis of Maryland.; Aunt: Melisa (Steve) Seiler of Taylorville, IL; Uncle: David (Julia) St. Louis of Raleigh, NC.
