Dorothy M. Vocks of Taylorville

Dorothy M. Vocks, 91, of Taylorville, passed away on Tuesday, November 26, 2013 at 5:42 p.m. at the Taylorville Care Center in Taylorville, IL. She was born on November 24, 1922 in Covington, KY; the daughter of Clarence and Anna (Kraft) Malkemus. She married Paul Louis Vocks on April 11, 1942 in St. Louis, MO; he preceded her on August 26, 2008. She was a homemaker. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Taylorville, and the St. Vincent Memorial Hospital Auxiliary for many years. Dorothy was an avid fan of the St. Louis Cardinals and the St. Louis Blues. She was very active in her community.

She is survived by her daughter, Kathleen Ann (James) Boedeker of St. Peters, MO; sons: Gary P. Vocks of Pawnee, IL, Kirk G. (Kathleen) Vocks of Taylorville, IL and Gregory A. (Diana) Vocks of Heiligenkreuz, Austria; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in passing by her parents and husband, Paul.

Visitation will be from 8:00 until 10:00 a.m. on Friday, November 29, 2013 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Taylorville, IL. A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, November 29, 2013 with Father Mariadas Chatla officiating. Burial will be at Camp Butler National Cemetery in Springfield, IL

Calvin C. Scallions of Chatham

Calvin C. Scallions, 89, of Chatham, IL, passed away Thursday, November 21, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. at Heritage Health, Springfield, IL.

He was born August 2, 1924 in Parsons, TN, the son of Delphus David and Mammie I. (Waller) Scallions. He married Patricia Ann Dye on July 2, 1955 in Stonington, IL. She preceded him in passing on May 31, 1998. He worked at Fiat Allis and was the owner and operator of Bill’s Toasty in Taylorville, IL. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan. He loved auctions and loved his friends and family.

Survivors include daughter: Candy Scallions of Chatham, IL; brother, James E. Scallions of AL; sisters, Helen Rush of Taylorville, Jessie Holt of Taylorville and Betty Mayes of TN; several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

He was preceded by his parents; wife, Patricia; brothers, George Scallions, Odell Scallions and Alfred Scallions; sisters Thelma Quinn, Lucille Dunavant and Mary Wilkins.

Visitation will be held on Monday, November 25, 2013 from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at Sutton Memorial Home in Taylorville, IL; Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, November 25, 2013 at Sutton Memorial Home, Taylorville, IL with Pastor Tim Moats officiating. Burial will be at Old Stonington Cemetery, Stonington, IL.

Joseph E. Saatkamp of Nokomis

Joseph E. Saatkamp, 87, of Nokomis, IL, passed away Tuesday , November 19, 2013 at Nokomis Rehabilitation Center, Nokomis, IL.

He was born May 14, 1926 in Rural Pana, IL, the son of William and Lulu (Seitz) Saatkamp. He married Marilyn Price on April 11, 1949 in Charleston, IL. Marilyn preceded him in passing on November 24, 1995. He was a retired farmer and mechanic, and a member of First Baptist Church in Nokomis, IL. He loved farming and his favorite hobby was putting jigsaw puzzles together.

Survivors include sons: Roy (Karen) Saatkamp of Washington, IL and Tom (Joan) Saatkamp of Pana, IL; daughter, Phyllis (Steve) Allen of Nokomis, IL; grandchildren: Andrea (Christopher) Meyers of Washington, IL and Adam (Stephanie) Saatkamp of Peoria, IL; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded by his parents; wife, Marilyn; son Ronald Saatkamp; brothers, Raymond Saatkamp, Logan Saatkamp, William Saatkamp; sisters, Mary Sutton, Dorothy Heldebrandt, Lola Anderson and Lou “Toots” Neismann.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, November 23, 2013 from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at Sutton Funeral Home in Nokomis, IL; Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 23, 2013 at Sutton Funeral Home, Nokomis, IL with Pastor Ryan Follis officiating. Steve Spatchy Sparling of Hewittville

Steve “Spatchy” Sparling 66, of Hewittville, IL, passed away Sunday, November 17, 2013 at 1:30 p.m. at his residence in Hewittville. He was born on April 12, 1947 in Taylorville, IL. The son of Alvin and Margie (Nance) Sparling. He married Lynda Summers on March 18, 1966 in Taylorville Steve was a social member of VFW Post #4495 in Taylorville and the Christian County Genealogical Society. He was an avid collector of marbles, die cast cars and baseball cards. He was a lifelong Dodger fan and loved to fish. Steve never met a stranger and was given the gift to make people laugh. He loved his Lord and family.

He survived by his wife, Lynda; son, Dennis (Laurie) Sparling of Taylorville; daughters, Michelle (companion Darryl Morgason) Hott of Taylorville, Mellissa (Tom) Zini of Taylorville and Miranda (Scott) Nagle of Taylorville; twelve grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; brother, Timothy (Deb) Sparling of Taylorville, sister, Debbie (John) Cline of Taylorville, several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in passing by his parents, brother, Larry (Karen) Sparling; sisters, Sharon (Jim) White and Shelby Smith.

Mary Lucile Vancil of Taylorville

Mary Lucile Vancil, 89 of Taylorville passed away on Saturday, November 16, 2013 at 11:25 PM at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield.

She was born on June 17, 1924 at Moweaqua the daughter of Edison and Lucile (Tyrey) Pile. She married Merle P. Vancil on December 27, 1947 at St. Louis, Missouri; he preceded her in death along with her parents; Sister, Linda Catlin; 2 Grandchildren, Brian Loucks and Paul Klinefelter.

Mary was a homemaker. She had also worked as a Women Ordnance Worker at the Sangamon Ordnance Plant in Illiopolis. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Fraternal Order of Eagles 1425 Auxiliary and Christian County Senior Citizens. She was a career babysitter for her grandchildren so that her own children could further their education.

Survivors: Daughters, Christine (Doug) Loucks of Hillsboro, IL, Phyllis (Stan) Harris and Geraldine (Ray) Klinefelter both of Taylorville, IL, Charlotte Montgomery (Mark) Edmiston and Mary Jane Vancil both of Springfield, IL; 13 Grandchildren; 18 Great Grandchildren; 3 Great Great Grandchildren; Brothers, Bill Pile of Idaho and Jack Pile of Florida; Sister, Helen (Monroe) Melzer of Danville, IL; Several Nieces and Nephews; Canine Companion, Poncho.

Funeral mass will be held on Wednesday, November 20, 2013 at 10:00 AM at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Rev. Mariadas Chatla officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery, Taylorville. Elsie Powell, 100, of Taylorville, passed away Saturday, November 16, 2013 at 1:06 a.m. at Taylorville Care Center, Taylorville. She was born May 3, 1913 in Taylorville, IL. The Daughter of Abel and Nellie Derringer Maquet. She married Llewellyn Powell on December 20, 1934 in Taylorville, IL and he later preceded her in death on June 22, 2003. She was a retired homemaker.

Lyndon McConnell, 55 yrs old of Taylorville, passed away at 3:14 a.m. on November 11, 2013 at his residence. He was born on December 9, 1957 in Taylorville, the son of ,  Robert & Louise(Coffey) McConnell. He married Pamela Payne on July 7, 2007 in Taylorville.He was a member of First United Methodist Church and the Moose Lodge.  Lyndon is survived by his wife; Pam, daughter; Brittni (Jeremy) Gordon of Taylorville, son; Brady McConnell of Taylorville and his father: Robert McConnell also of Taylorville. In addition, he is survived by Step sons: Tyler(Kate) Payne of Sherman, IL and Cory (companion Mati Jordan) Payne of Springfield, IL, step daughter; Megan Hunsley of Taylorville, grandchildren; Noah & Haley Bliler, Chase & Curt Hunsley, Chloe Mathon and Emma & Ava Payne.  He is also survived by sisters: Sharon(Ron) Sutzer of Chatham, IL and Mardell McConnell of Taylorville and brothers; Robert(Toni) McConnell Jr. of OK, Daniel(companion Patti) McConnell of Edinburg, IL and Gary (Debbie) McConnell of Kincaid and several nieces, nephews and cousins.  Lyndon was preceded in death by his mother and niece: Brandy McConnell.  Visitation will be held on Thursday, November 14, 2013 from 5:00-8:00 p.m. in Sutton Memorial Home in Taylorville. Virginia B. Kurczek, 89, of Taylorville, passed away on November 11, 2013 at 9:30 a.m. at Taylorville Memorial Hospital. She was born January 28, 1924 in Chicago, IL; the daughter of Matthew and Julia (Zegar) Zwieczkowski. She married George Kurczek, he preceded her in 1981. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Taylorville, the Catholic Daughters and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Moose. She loved gardening and cooking. She is survived by her nephews, Robert (Dawn) Zwick of Taylorville, IL and Brent Zwick of Peoria, IL; many great nieces and great nephews. She was preceded in passing by her parents, husband George, brothers, Ted and Gene.

Betty I. Jackson of Taylorville

Betty I. Jackson, 75, of Taylorville, passed away on November 9, 2013 at 9:45a.m. at the Taylorville Care Center. She was born October 25, 1938 in Kincaid IL; the daughter of Thomas and Aline (Mammen) Dobyns. She married Wilson Leroy Jackson on September 16, 1966 in Taylorville, they divorced. Later, she married Craig Waterman in Taylorville and they later divorced. She was a Public Aid Case Worker for the State of Illinois. She is survived by her son, Mark (Jordana) Jackson of Springfield, IL; granddaughter, Samantha Jackson of Springfield, IL; sisters, Helen (Michael) Sheedy of Palmer, IL and Janice (Terry) Sexton of Taylorville, IL; brothers, Jerry (JoAnn) Dobyns of Taylorville, IL and Terry Dobyns of MO; several nieces, nephews and cousins, Renee Masterson, Barbara Taylor, Crystal Hicks, Deetta Shanks, Billy Jo Poplar, Thomas Dobyns, Rick Dobyns, Jerry Lynn Dobyns, Rex Rickman, Brett Rickman and Susan Umberger. Johnny H. Tarrant Sr. of Taylorville

Johnny H. Tarrant Sr., 89, of Taylorville, passed away on November 8, 2013 at 9:50 p.m. at the Taylorville Care Center. He was born January 26, 1924 in Taylorville IL; the son of Ralph Clifford and Lora (Huddleston) Tarrant. He married Josephine Emerson on April 11, 1943 in Taylorville, IL. She preceded him in passing on November 26, 2000. He was a retired cutter from Georgia Pacific. He is survived by his daughters, Lula Goins of Taylorville, Lora (Duane) Cook of Indianapolis, IN, Ronda (Mark) Cutler of Moweaqua, IL and Rita Thomas of Fargo, ND; son, Johnny (Diana) Tarrant Jr. of Sevierville, TN; nine grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; sisters, Caroline Thompson of Taylorville and Barb (William) Smitty of New Albany, IN; brothers, Dean (Nancy) Tarrant of MO and Larry (Wanda) Neidish of FL; sister-in-law, Shirley Tarrant of Taylorville; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Phyllis Arlene Beck of Stonington

Phyllis Arlene Beck, 75, of Stonington, IL died at 3:48 pm, Saturday, November 9, 2013 at St. Mary’s Hospital, Decatur, IL.

She was born March 4, 1938 in Decatur, IL the daughter of Chester R. and Viola Rose Wells. On November 16, 1963 she married Lowell L. Beck at the Mt. Zion Presbyterian Church. He preceded her in death on March 20, 2011. She attended the First Baptist Church in Stonington. Mrs. Beck was the Valedictorian of the Mt. Zion High School Class of 1956. She attended Illinois State University and graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Education from Milliken University. She taught elementary school in Decatur and also substituted and was an aide at Stonington Elementary School. Phyllis was an accomplished pianist and played at Old Stonington Baptist Church for many years and played at Decatur Memorial Hospital every Wednesday. She was an active volunteer at Decatur Memorial Hospital, and taught Sunday School for many years at Old Stonington Baptist Church. Phyllis was on the Board of Directors for the Stonington Township Library and was an active volunteer with the Library. She loved sewing and crafts and Phyllis’ greatest legacy will be her love and adoration of her grandchildren.

Surviving are her son: Bryan Beck and wife Renee of Ft. Mill, SC; Daughter: Kerry Beck of Waukesha, WI. Grandchildren: Camille Beck, Apryl Beck, Kinsey Ernst, Emma Ernst, and Nathan Ernst.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 am Thursday, November 14 at First Baptist Church in Stonington with Dr. William Mitchell officiating. Burial will be in Old Stonington Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm Wednesday at McClure Funeral Home, Taylorville, IL and one hour prior to services in the Church on Thursday.

Billy G. Eggiman of Morrisonville

Billy G. Eggiman, 79 of Morrisonville passed away on Saturday, November 9, 2013 at 1:24 AM at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield.

He was born on August 28, 1934 at Whitewater, Missouri the son of Walter C. and Amanda (Muster) Eggimann. He married Hazel I. Hawkins on November 24, 1979 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Taylorville. He was preceded in death by his parents; 4 infant children, Debra, Lonnie, Judy and Danny; Brothers, Donald Eggimann and Delmar Eggiman; 1 infant brother and 1 infant sister.

Billy worked as a tractor mechanic for Balsley Implement and then Sloan Implement before his retirement. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Taylorville and a US Air Force veteran.

Survivors include: Wife, Hazel I. Eggiman of Morrisonville, IL; Son, Mickey L. Eggiman of Taylorville, IL; Step Son, Michael R. (Tina) Cross of Mineral Wells, TX; Daughters, Diana (Melvin) Durbin of Nokomis, IL, Christine Bryant of Monmouth, IL, Barbara (Dave) Ceballas of Prior Lake, MN and Rhonda J. Eggiman of Taylorville, IL; Step Daughters, Norma L. Cross of Taylorville, IL and Barbara J. (Bill Lee) Chamberlain of Kissimmee, FL; Several Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren; Sisters, Doris (Jack) Sutherland of Decatur, IL, Judy Davis of Independence, MO and Sharon Martin of Lincoln, IL; Several Nieces and Nephews.

Albert Charles Bartels of Taylorville

Albert Charles Bartels 84, of Taylorville, passed away on November 9, 2013 at 10:10 a.m. at his home with his family by his side. He was born October 31, 1929 in Mattoon, IL; the son of Herman Ferpinand and Ida Mae (Sheckell) Bartels. He married Linda Myers on May 23, 1955. He was Dean Of Boys at Taylorville High School for 20 years and had over 37 years in teaching. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and a past member of the Taylorville Lions Club. He enjoyed fixing things like furniture, cars and all kinds of things. He is survived by his wife Linda of Taylorville; son, Michael Bartels of St. Louis, MO; daughter, Kelly Bartels of Loves Park, IL, many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in passing by his parents, two brothers and three sisters.

Helen J. Wagner of Taylorville

Helen J. Wagner, 94, of Taylorville, IL died at 8:20 AM Thursday, November 7, 2013 at her home.

She was born February 9, 1919 in Leckrone, PA, the daughter of Andrew and Anna Valyo Poruaznik.  On January 7, 196 she married James E. Wagner at St. Andrews Catholic Church in Christopher, IL. He preceded her in death on January 2, 1992.  Mr. Wagner was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Taylorville.

Surviving are her son: Bob Wagner and wife Linda of Taylorville; 2 Grandsons: Mark A. Wagner and wife Cindy and David J. Wagner and wife Shanon all of Taylorville; Great Grandchildren: Samuel J. Wagner, Sarah M. Wagner, Sidney L. Wagner, Cassie R. Rush and husband Brandon, and Savanah J. Dunn; Great-great Grandchildren: Riley Rush and Kaden Rush.  Also surviving is her brother: John Poruaznik of Phoenix, AZ.  She was preceded in death by her parents, and 9 Brothers and Sisters.

Peggy Portwood, 47, of Taylorville, passed away on November 5, 2013 at 7:30 a.m. at her residence in Taylorville, IL. She was born September 6, 1966 in Hillsboro, IL; the daughter of Robert and Sharon (Traylor) Altevogt. She married Richard Portwood on September 10, 2005 in Taylorville, IL. She was a clerk at Kroger in Taylorville, IL. She is survived by her mother, Sharon Altevogt of Witt, IL; husband, Richard Portwood of Taylorville, IL; step-son, Matthew Brooks of Noblesville, IN; step-daughters, Danielle Weinert of Taylorville, IL, Kaitlyn Portwood of Taylorville, IL and Alexandra Ferguson of Indianapolis, IN; four step-grandchildren; sisters, Sheila Smith of Taylorville, IL, Shirley (James) Cooper of Taylorville, IL, Roberta Altevogt of Witt, IL and Donna (Bill) Wilhelm of Witt, IL; several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in passing by her father.

Visitation will be held on Friday, November 8, 2013 from 3:00 until 6:00 p.m. at Sutton Memorial Home in Taylorville, IL.

Memorial services will be at 6:00 p.m. at Sutton Memorial Home in Taylorville, IL. Cremation will be accorded following the services. Inurnment will be held at St. John’s Cemetery in Witt, IL at a later date.

Marjorie Eloise Garwood, 93, of Stonington passed away at 3pm, Monday November 4, 2013, at her home. She was born on November 1, 1920, in Casey, Illinois, the daughter of Benjamin and Rachael Davis Waterman. She married F. Donald Garwood on December 30, 1945, in Taylorville. He preceded her in death on April 27, 1983. Mrs. Garwood was a homemaker and a member of the Stonington United Methodist Church.

 

Mrs. Garwood is survived by her children: Carl Garwood, wife Patricia, of Stonington; Greg Garwood of Brighton, MI; Marcia Pitha, husband Josef of Decatur; and Carol Jo McGraw, husband Tom, of Fountain Hills, AZ. Grandchildren: Scott Garwood, wife Amber of Decatur; Brian Garwood, wife Tracy, of Forsyth; Jill Chlebus, husband Joe, of Taylorville, and Jason Garwood of Ames, IA. Great Grandchildren: Owen Garwood, Alexander Garwood, Gavin Garwood, and Julia Chlebus. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and 2 brothers: George Waterman and Ben Waterman.

 

Funeral Services will be held at 11am on Saturday, November 9, 2013, at McClure Funeral Home, Taylorville, with Rev. Ray Radae and Rev. Marge Overlot officiating. Burial will be in the Old Stonington Cemetery, Stonington Illinois. Visitation will be held from 10 until 11 am Saturday at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to the Stonington United Methodist Church or the Stonington Rescue Squad. McClure Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Ruth Lucille Strumpfer of Taylorville

Ruth Lucille Strumpfer, 91, of Taylorville, IL died at 2:20 am Thursday, October 30, 2013, at Memorial Medical Center, Springfield, IL

She was born March 14, 1922 in Taylorville, IL the daughter of George M. and Ella Kinnett Muffick.  On July 28, 1942 she married Stephen Strumpfer in St. Louis, MO.  He preceded her in death on August 28, 1977.  Mr. Strumpfer was a member of First Baptist Church in Taylorville, and was a member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary, Eagle’s Auxiliary, and the Christian County Home Extension.  She had been employed by St. Vincent Memorial Hospital in the Dietary Department, retiring in 1984 and she later worked part time at Meadow Manor Nursing Home.

Surviving are her Sons: William Albert Strumpfer and Lennard Strumpfer both of Taylorville. 4 Grandchldren: Jennifer Strumpfer, Jessica Strumpfer, Dawn Strumpfer, Dawn Willis, and Annette Wilson. Four Great Grandchildren, and there are several Nieces and Nephews also survive.  She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, 2 Brothers: William Knazavich and Ernest Knazavich, and 4 sisters: Mary Deavers, Betty Perona, Martha Bertock, and Kathleen Burch.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 AM Thursday, November 7, 2013 at McClure Funeral Home with Rev. Steve Robinson officiating.  Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.  Visitation will be held from 10:00 am until time of service in the Funeral Home on Thursday.

John W. Hawkins of Owaneco

John W. Hawkins, 80, of Owaneco, died at 9:40 pm Saturday, November 2, 2013 at Prairie Rose Nursing Home, Pana, IL.

He was born February 3, 1933 in New Burnside, IL, the son of Clyde and Alice Marie Newbold Hawkins.  On January 18, 1956 he married Norma Blietz in South Elgin, IL.  He was affiliated with the United Methodist Church, a Marine veteran of the Korean War, V.F.W. Post 4495, Elgin Masonic Lodge, and the National Rifle Association.  Mr. Hawkins retired from G.S.I. in Assumption as a Purchasing Agent.

Surviving are his wife Norma of Owaneco, IL; Son: Brian Hawkins and wife Tina of Owaneco, Daughters: Teresa Holcomb of Springfield, Dawn Pierce and husband Wade of Carrollton, TX, and Jennifer Hawkins of McKinney, TX. Grandchildren: Rachel Gilpin, Sara Hawkins, Kristi Millburg, Justin Maxson, Kyle Maxson, Emily Pierce, Erin Pierce, and Faith Pierce.  There are 6 Great Grandchildren.  Also surviving is a sister: Rose Mausey and husband Lowell of Creal Springs, IL.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 am Friday, November 8 at McClure Funeral Home.  Visitation will be held from 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm Thursday at the funeral Home with Masonic Services at 7:00 pm.

Joyce Ann Miller of Taylorville

Joyce Ann Miller, 89, of Taylorville, passed away on October 31, 2013 at 6:45 a.m.at the Meadow Manor Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Taylorville, IL. She was born June 7, 1924 in Carterville, IL; the Paul and Edna Alice (Alexander) Upchurch. She married Thomas Lloyd Breckenridge on July 17, 1945. He preceded her in passing on April 18, 1989. Then on November 17, 1990 she married Gerald Miller, he preceded her on April 4, 2010. She was a homemaker, a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Friendship Class of the First United Methodist Church in Taylorville, and the Arcana Chapter #493 of the Order of the Eastern Star. She is survived by her sons, Richard (Peggy) Breckenridge and Steven (Rose) Breckenridge both of Taylorville; step-daughters, Thelma L. Harbert of Taylorville and Linda A. Zanyk of Miami, FL; four grandchildren and five step-grandchildren; brother, George (Natalie) Upchurch of Taylorville. She is preceded in death by her parents, husbands, grandsons, Nathan and Ryan; sisters, Genevieve Buchanan and Virginia Vedas; step-son, Gerald Miller Jr.
